was one of the bystanders. The time would have probably have been in
the late 40's.

Minot, who was a pretty fair gardener in his own right, got the ball
rolling with a story about this huge cabbage that he had seen growing
while stationed in Texas with the "Air Service." It seems that this
cabbage was big even by Texas standards. I'm not sure if anyone fed
him the line "So how big was it?" or not but he did go on to say that
it was so big that it required a bulldozer to pull it out of the
ground.

Now it was Jack's turn. "Speaking of big things" he said, "When I was
in France they were working on this huge kettle that was so big that
when one of the welders riveting it together got lost they had to fly
an 'aeroplane' over it to find him." Minot walked right into it.
"What were they going to use a pot that big for?" he asked. " Why to
cook that damn cabbage of yours in." Jack replied.

Today great numbers of "story tellers" have been elected to political
office and can be found in such places as Montpelier and Washington. I
leave it to you to determine if they fit my definition of storytellers
or are they something else?

Palmetto, Florida August, 2000
