"Are you telling us the truth Amaya?"

"Of course." I didn't see how he could think I was telling them a lie.

My father lowered his head then turned and swept my mother up in his
arms laughing merrily. My mother started laughing just because of the
way my father was acting. I was utterly confused for a moment but
remembered my Father had wanted so badly for us to be allowed to have
the magic but doubted we would ever receive it. My mother and father
danced in our tiny living room as my brothers played some lively music.

That night we were all summoned to a meeting. That was were we were told
of receiving the magic. Everyone rejoiced at the news. The King told us
we would be taught how to use it and the rules we would have to follow
the next day by the wizard Malnuwe. I remembered that was the name of
the man I saw in the field. I had never seen a wizard before and
wondered if they all dressed like that. I didn't have much time to
ponder this for we left the castle soon after and joined in on the
parties. There were bonfires, dances, and all sorts of foods. Roasted
pig, bread pudding, and lots of fruits and vegetables. I danced and ate
as much as I possibly could. That night I slept well dreaming of a
happy future.

The next day we all joined at the edge of the Cloud Forest. It was named
this for the simple reason of the fog that covered the tops of the
trees. Soon the man I had seen the day before appeared before us in a
flash of light. Everyone clapped and cheered. The man merely smiled
lightly. He held his hand up to silence the clamor. Slowly the people
quieted their clapping and shouts.

"The reason you are here is to learn how to use magic and what you may
not use it for. It will not take you long to learn how to use it but
the sooner we start the sooner we finish." He began to teach us the
different spells and enchantments. Then he explained to us the
different creatures that were to be introduced to our home and there
magic. It was a long but interesting day. When we were finally allowed
to go home we already knew quite a bit of magic. As the days passed we
learned more and more. Soon the wizard left and we were on our own.

In the beginning everyone followed the rules. But soon people wanted to
be the best and most powerful. They started using the magic against
each other. It started out as just minor injuries, burns and such but
soon people were being killed. It was becoming a dreadful nightmare.
The people started killing the magical animals for their powers. It
turned into a black violent world. I was frightened to leave our home.
The King had been assassinated and there was no one to stop this
madness. We were on our own. We lived in a destroyed world that had
once been beautiful and cheerful.

When I turned sixteen I decided I had best do something. Things were
getting worse people were beginning to learn black magic. I left my
home secretly and snuck through the dark streets, frightened. I went to
the field were this had all started. I used the magic I had learned to
open a portal to the world of wizards. I walked through and recognized
the waterfall I had seen all those years before. The thought of the
world we had once had pained my heart. I had to find someone to help
me. I didn't know where to go so I just headed in one direction and
walked. I walked until my feet hurt and my hope began to dim and then
I saw a small cottage up ahead. I ran to it and banged on the door. An
old man answered the door looking quite startled. "Are you a wizard?" I
asked hopefully.

"Yes. Why do you ask me?"

"My name is Amaya I'm from the world of men something terrible has
happened."

He invited me into his home quickly asking me to take a seat. I had just
a moment to look around. It was a comfortable looking home. There was a
fireplace but because of the heat there was no fire. There was a table
with piles of neatly stacked books and scrolls on it. There were many
book shelves and shelves lining the walls. On the shelves were many
trinkets and weird looking jars and such. Before she could take in any
more he spoke to her. “What has happened Amaya?” He asked handing her a
glass of a cold sweet beverage.

"The people have broken many of the rules that were laid down about
magic. They have killed many of the magical creatures and they have
even started killing each other. I'm frightened. I thought perhaps a
wizard could help to restore order."

The wizard turned away. "I'm afraid I cannot restore order. I must take
the magic away. Men have wasted and abused the gift. They do not
deserve it."

"But . . . " I didn't want to lose this just keep it in control. "Can't
you just . . . "

“No, Amaya I cannot.” He spoke harshly but when he turned his expression
had changed. “ The race of men are too greedy to keep magic. I must
take it away. Amaya this is the only way to teach them. I thought they
could handle this but I was obviously mistaken."

Suddenly a realization hit me. I took a closer look at the man and my
heart skipped a beat. “Malnuwe? Are you Malnuwe?”

“Yes Amaya I am the one you saw in the plains the day you received the
magic.”

“How did you know I was there? You didn't even look at me.”

“Amaya I could sense you for some reason you have always had magic. I
don't know how and probably never will but,” He waved a hand in the
air. “To the matter at hand. I know it is a disappointment but the
magic must be taken away.”

I nodded my head perhaps he was right. After all there was no way to
control peoples minds. He offered me the chance to stay there in the
wizard world but I refused. I was a human also. I must pay the price as
well. He led me back to the portal and we passed through together back
into my once beautiful world. He looked at me then began to chant. The
words seemed strange to me it was no chant I had heard before. A light
broke through the darkness as Unicorns ran towards us. Dragons soared
over head fairies buzzed through the air. Soon I was surrounded by
magical beings of all kinds. Then people were joining in among them in
some sort of trance.

"You have abused your power! You do not deserve this so you will not
have it!" Malnuwe shouted.

The people came out of their trance and realized what was happening. The
world seemed to feel the loss it was about to suffer as well. The wind
blew harshly making sorrowful howling sounds. The rain fell heavily as
though the spirits in the air were weeping. The people felt as though
their world were coming to an end. Or at least I did. They new it was
their fault they were losing this gift. They had misused it and now
they were being punished for it. They watched painfully as the portal
opened and their gift of magic slowly passed through it away from
earth. The creatures ran from them and magic in form of light ripped
away from them and glided away. People fell on their knees and begged.
But the wizard turned only to me. He gave me one last chance to come
with him but again I refused. He smiled at me and said. “You are very
wise Amaya. May the magic always live in your heart." Then he turned
and walked through the portal just as it closed. A pain ripped at my
heart but I did not cry.

People spent many days after that moaning and complaining. But soon they
moved on and went back to living their lives without magic. As I sit
here I pray one-day man will learn to control their greed and the magic
will be allowed to them again, but until then we will just have to
dream and hope.

The End
