where he was or whom he had befriended. He still enjoyed the freedom
but it wouldn't be so bad to have someone that cared about him. Someone
to hold through the lonely nights and laugh with through the long hot
summer days.

As the sun fell behind the hills, the pink twilight, so gentle and
serene, blanketed the sky before him. He pulled his bike over to the
road and gazed out across the clearing to the ocean. He could hear the
waves roaring into shore. The powerful Pacific Ocean was a strapping
stud he thought. Home of Neptune and the fierceness of mans spirit. The
Atlantic Ocean was a lady. As feline as Aphrodite's gentle hands,
carrying the tide docilely onto the sand. That seemed right to him and
he smiled every time he thought of the parable.

He turned to mount his bike and looked up startled to see her house. His
gaze froze for a moment realizing that he had without thought driven
and now stopped right below her house. The lights cascaded from her
windows and he half hoped she wasn't there and had just left them on
before she went out.

He took a step back from his bike feeling strangely scared. Why did he
have to stop here? Hell, he hadn't seen her in months. Why not just
stop by and say hello. He would like to see her again and they didn't
end on a bad note. Hell why not he thought, it might be the fates
telling him to check in on an old friend. No harm in that! He drove up
her driveway and parked near the front porch.

Hearing the rumble of a motorcycle motor didn't even cause Elizabeth to
move. To many times before she had envisioned his bike driving up her
driveway. To many times had she ran to the door to find it was only
wishful thinking. She ignored the sound until a knock came to the door.
Her eyes shot up from her book and tiny picks of electricity rushed
through her body. She listened unbelieving. Another knock came to the
door. This one louder and stronger than the first. She set the book
aside and slowly rose from her chair. Turning she saw a figure standing
outside the door. She hurried to the door and opened it up.

His smile broadened as her wide-eyed face met his. Hello, stranger he
said. I was in the neighborhood so I thought I would stop and see how
you were getting along. Stunned she stepped back and bade him to come
in. Suddenly she was calm and composed and in the recesses of her mind
Thanking God with every fiber of her heart. He walked in and she asked
him to sit down.

“Can I get you something to drink”? I have some beer, ice tea, coffee or
coke. I'll have a cup of coffee if it's not too much trouble, he
replied. Not at all, it is already made. She retrieved the coffee
remembering how he like it and handed him the mug. You look good, he
remarked, “How's life been treating you?” She smiled, “Good; I was
promoted and making A grades in school.” “So you went back to school, I
remember you said you were planning to do that”. “Yes, I started last
January, the semester is almost over now. Ends last week in May”. “ I
am ready for the break! I have had NO social life only work and school
since Christmas.” It has been a life change. She tried to seem normal
but her spirits rose with each moments gaze at his wonderful face.
“Gosh, it is good to see you. I have thought of you often over these
past months and wondered how you were and what you were doing.” She
confessed Yes, I have thought of you too. His words stumbled. I mean I
wondered if you were making your life workout or not. With school and
all. He was feeling attraction as he watched her slender body move
across the room. He flashed on their last kiss and how the music filled
them with rhythmic motion. She prodded the fire into flame and then sat
herself next to him on the couch. “I thought you might be married by
now”, he teased. What would make you wonder about a thing like that?
She grinned. Well, as I recall you were thinking allot about marriage
last time we were together. Yes, I suppose I was, her gaze leaving his
face to canvas the floor. But I wasn't actually thinking in generic
terms. And she looked back into his eyes to catch his reaction. He
whenced and shifted in his seat as though he felt slightly
uncomfortable. She reached out and touched his cheek, gently. I no
longer think about marriage, I am consumed with graduating now. And she
smiled a reassuring smile. He smiles back and relief flooded his face
and demeanor. “ Well, here is to making the grade!” he grinned and held
up his mug to toast her.

They talked about his charity rally and her most resent household
improvements. Their conversation rolled and bubbled like a fresh water
stream dancing down a mountain. She felt happy and his eyes twinkled
with pleasure. Hours passed without neither of them noticing. I am
hungry, how about you? she asked feeling her stomach rumble. I could
use a bite. Want to ride down to Jakes for a steak or something; it's
on me? he said. I have a couple of steaks in the fridge. Why not let me
fix something for us here. She replied. “Sounds good to me, if you let
me help!” He said. You can make the salad, she agreed. Come on “Chief
Shields”, she teased; let's do it! He followed her into the kitchen and
they played, teased and laughed, while they chopped, diced and broiled
their dinner. They lingered over a bottle of wine as the candlelight
flickered across the table. He leaned back in his chair and felt so
content, full and satisfied. I am really glad I stopped by Liz; it has
been to long between visits. He said with a noticeable note of
sincerity in his voice. “I am glad you stopped by too; I have thought
of you over these past months much more than I would care to admit.”
She gently smiled never showing the heartache she had felt without him.
Would you like to retire into the living room? She asked. Can't I help
you with the dished? He inquired Later, right now I want to let this
meal digest with a little relaxation.

Simultaneously they approached her nine-foot couch from either side.
Finding they were nose to nose. Sitting their half full wine glasses
down on the coffee table together. As each lifted their heads up they
found they were so close together that they could feel the body heat
radiating from one another. He looked quietly into her eyes and she was
captured by his mood. His head leaned down and gently kissed her lips.
He whispered, Thank You for dinner and kissed her a little deeper the
second time. She took him in her arms and they fell into a deep long
symphonic kiss that enveloped them both. Heads parting they stared into
one another's eyes. He whispers, lets make love. She nods her head
approvingly and takes his hand and leads him into her bedroom.

Christmas Morning year's later:

Elizabeth tiptoes threw the dawn to place the most significantly special
present of the holiday under the tree. She carefully turns on the
Christmas lights, fills the stockings and munches down the cookies left
by the grand children the night before. She puts the turkey in the oven
and sets the timer for the mid-day feast. All is ready she thinks as
she takes a final glace around the wonderfully decorated room.

Her children and grandchildren are snug in their beds. The man she loves
more than life itself lies waiting for her in the bed they've shared
for years; in their warm comfortable home at the end of a very long
bike trail.

The end
