the back of her Daddy’s Texaco station. Larry knew just where to go,
around back, so no one could see them. They sat there kissing and
hugging each other, petting as we called this, back then, however,
French kissing was out of the question !

Lucy’s parents were always putting Larry down and saying things like, ‘
He will never amount to a hill of beans. ‘ Lucy’s mama’s favorite was,
‘ He doesn’t have enough ambition to pour piss out of a boot ! ‘ Both
of her parents told Lucy that she would be the one making a living for
the two of them. Larry never had any trouble getting a job, he just had
a hard time keeping one. But, even though Lucy knew this, she just
pushed those thoughts out of her mind, thinking that he would surely
chance.

Lucy chose not to go to college. She went to Beauty School. And she
finished the same year she graduated from high school. So, at least she
had a trade, and she knew how to make money ! The more Lucy’s parents
tried to discourage her from seeing Larry, the more she wanted to prove
to them that she would walk down that isle, and marry him, and live
happily ever after. This is the way things were supposed to be, and
this is what she had heard all of her life, just like in the fairy
tales she had read, and things were supposed to happen this way. So
Lucy had to prove to everyone concerned, and to herself, that this was
a true love and it was real. Lucy was damned and determined that things
would work out. However, it seemed as though, the more she tried to
make things work out, they only got worse.

Lucy and Larry had only been married a few weeks, when he quit his job.
Her flag didn’t go up at the time, as she was busy working at a Hair
Salon, there in her small town.

Larry ended up talking Lucy into moving out of town. His brother had
found a job for him. It was a good job, working for a construction
Company. That was about the extent of what he could do, but he always
had his guitar to fall back on. Even though Lucy knew she would have no
trouble finding a job, in fact there was one waiting for her, working
for a lady, who had a Beauty Salon, and was a good friend of Larry’s
brother.

Lucy loved her job, and just fell right in with the folks she worked
for. They soon became like family to her, but she missed her Mama and
Daddy, and had never been away from home.

Just as Lucy’s folks predicted, Larry didn’t keep his job for long. He
had gathered some of his friends, and they put a band together, and
started working different Gigs at nightclubs. So, Lucy worked late, and
hardly even saw him, which was alright with her. She was getting sick
of him !

Larry ended up sleeping during the day, and taking some precious time to
drink beer with his friends and sometimes Lucy came home to find him in
a drunken stupor ! She was furious, to say the least, and one day, she
came home to find beer cans stacked up, and lining the walls, like
wallpaper !

Lucy and a friend of hers, whose husband was in the Band, got together
occasionally, and went out to eat, and just hung out. Sometimes, they
went to the VFW Club, to watch the show ! The Band was great, and a lot
of folks danced and had a big time. There was always a designated table
for the wives of the Band members to sit, so they did feel kind of
special, and they were even offered free drinks. Lucy didn’t drink. She
never had. She was so disgusted about seeing Larry drunk all of the
time, it was a big turn off for her !

One night, Lucy and her girlfriend showed up unannounced, at the Bar
where their husbands were doing a Gig. No one could see them, and as
they looked up on the stage, they could not believe their eyes. There
was a girl on stage with them, shaking her butt all around !

They left the Bar, and when Larry came home the next day, she asked him
if this was ‘ His Girl ‘ ! He just started laughing, and Lucy was
furious ! She had seen the lipstick on his collar, but she didn’t say a
word about it. She was just thinking that this was the so called, ‘
icing on the cake ! ‘ Or, the ‘ straw that broke the camels back ! ‘
The time had come, and this was the day Lucy started making her plan !

Lucy started avoiding Larry. She would not even let him touch her ! And,
he knew that if he ever mistreated her that her Daddy would, ’ bust
his Ass ! ‘ Lucy was definitely a Daddy’s Girl !

Whilst in the process of Lucy making her plans, Larry had started taking
her to her Mama and Daddy’s house, on Saturday afternoons, and picking
her up late on Sunday nights. Her Daddy was a workaholic, so she didn’t
see him much at all. It was evident that Larry was seeing someone else,
but by this time, Lucy just didn’t give a damn. In fact, she didn’t
give a damn about much of anything.

It was very cold weather, almost time for Christmas, when Lucy got a
phone call early one morning. Oh my Gosh, it was Larry’s brother, Gary
! Lucy knew this was bad news. Just as he was saying, ‘ Lucy, I am
sending Mary (his wife), over to get you; your Daddy is in the
hospital, and he has been shot ‘, her door bell rang ! It was Mary !
Lucy tried to scream, but not a sound would come out of her mouth....,
Lucy remembered Mary quietly saying, ‘ grab some clothes and let’s go !
‘

Mary tried to get Lucy to respond to what she was saying, but she
couldn’t speak. She thought she was choking ! Lucy was in deep thought
about the buzz around town that the KKK was on the loose. Even though
she had no clue as to what was really going on, she would never believe
that her Daddy was in any way involved in it !

‘ OH MY GOD ‘, Lucy thought, she was having a flash-back from her
past.................,

Lucy was only twelve years old, and her parents had just moved from the
country. Her uncle Jay and his wife, Dorothy, came in the room where
she was, and she said, ‘ Lucy, we need to go to the hospital ! ‘ ‘ Your
Daddy is very ill, and they don’t think he will make it through the
night ! ‘ She said, ‘ you have to be a big girl, and get ready to go
and tell your Daddy, goodbye ! ‘ Lucy tried to scream, but she was
choking, and she told her aunt Dorothy that she didn’t want to be a big
girl, and she finally screamed, ‘ my Daddy is not going to die ! ‘ ‘
NO, it’s not going to happen ‘, she screamed.

When Lucy got to the hospital, she was screaming so loud, and the nurses
and her family wouldn’t let her in, so, she screamed louder, and
louder, and just busted in the door ! She ran to her Daddy’s side. He
was all red and his face was swollen at least twice it’s size ! She had
heard the nurse say, ‘ he’s in a coma ! ‘

Lucy sat down and leaned over, close to her Daddy. She whispered in his
ear, ‘ Daddy, you are not going to die, I promise. Daddy, you can’t die
now, you can’t leave me like this ‘, Lucy continued to whisper. ‘ Daddy
‘, Lucy whispered in his ear, ‘ I have talked to God, and he’s not
going to let you die, like this.’ ‘ Please Daddy, hang on, you will be
much better soon ! ‘ ‘ Please Daddy, you can’t die, and I know you
want.’

All of a sudden, the nurses started screaming, ‘ he’s waking up ‘ ! They
started jumping around, and doing all kinds of things ! They couldn’t
believe it ! Lucy’s Daddy was coming out of the coma, as she felt him
squeeze her hand ! The nurses and Doctors made Lucy leave the room, and
tried to make her talk to them, but she still couldn’t speak, and she
thought she was going to choke ! Lucy had heard one of the nurses
buzzing around, and heard the word, ‘ suicide ‘ ! Lucy had no idea what
that word meant, at the time !

As soon as Lucy could, she sneaked back and sat in the corner, where
nobody could see her. Her Daddy turned his head, and winked at his ‘
Daddy’s girl ‘, as Lucy breathed a long, silent sigh. She knew it ! She
knew that her Daddy was not going to die, after all, she had talked to
God, and he made a promise that Lucy would never forget, as long as she
lived !

‘ OH MY GOD ‘ , Lucy screamed, as she snapped out of her nightmare she
was in !

Even though Mary tried to calm Lucy down, she screamed louder, and
louder. How could Lucy tell her what she was thinking......,

As they drove up to the ER, at the hospital, one of Lucy’s Daddy’s
friends was outside to meet her, and he said, ‘ we think your Daddy has
killed himself ! ‘ He said, ‘ he’s still alive, but is not expected to
live ! ‘ Lucy screamed at him, ‘ You are CRAZY ! ‘ And, she made a
stupid facial expression, at the, so called, friend of her Daddy’s, and
she ran away ! She was so mad, and full of hate for that man, and she
had never liked him anyway.

Lucy ran as fast as she could, toward the hospital. This time, no one
would let Lucy go in the room. Then, Lucy heard the bloody
screaming....., ringing in her ears, so loud, that they were hurting.
Lucy knew that this time was real, and her Daddy was gone, he was
dead.........,

Lucy was quiet, as she got back in the car, and Mary drove her home, to
her Mama and Daddy’s house, which would always be ’ home ’, to her. On
the way, they passed her Daddy’s Texaco service station. There were
cars and people all around, they could hardly get through. She told
Mary not to stop ! She knew that she wouldn’t be able to get near the
place, there were too many people there.

There was yellow tape all around the whole Texaco station ! As Lucy and
Mary drove on by, Lucy thought about the time Larry would not stop the
car, and let her see her Daddy. That Son of a Bitch, she thought.

When Lucy arrived at her house, folks were screaming to the top of their
lungs ! She could hear her Mama crying. Some one had told Lucy that the
FBI was there.

Lucy came unglued ! But, as loud as she screamed, they wouldn’t let her
go into her Mama’s bedroom, and they insisted that they would not let
her in.

A man grabbed Lucy by the arm, and told her that he was the one who had
found her Daddy, that morning. He told her not to ever let anyone make
her believe that her Daddy had killed himself. He drew sort of a map,
that showed everything he found that morning.

All of the details were one huge fog, for a long time. Lucy just tried
to push them to the back burner. She did remember that Larry had gone
out and gotten as drunk as a skunk, with her Uncle Jay, that night,
whilst she was lying in her Mama’s bed, alone ! She couldn’t cry
anymore, even though she tried.

This story still remains a mystery, even though it occurred in 1966,
during the Civil Rights Movement. A lot of gossip was buzzing in the
air, but Lucy didn’t want to hear it !

A few months passed, and Lucy had finally gotten her plans in order. She
was totally ready to leave this ‘ Po Dunk ‘ town ! In all actuality,
she was very afraid, afraid for her life, for some unknown reason.

Lucy’s Mama and her sister arranged for her to go and stay for a while
with her aunt, her Mama’s sister, who lived in Alabama. Lucy loved it
there, and used to visit her cousin in the summer.

Lucy had gathered up some clothes, leaving all of her stuff behind, but
she didn’t care. It was time for her to GO !

Just as Larry wouldn’t let her say, ‘ Goodbye ‘ to her Daddy, she saw no
reason to tell the Son of a Bitch, ‘ Goodbye ‘............

And she did as the song went, back then, ‘ do, to, do...., do to, do,
do....................., ‘ Lucy ....,

‘ Hopped on the Bus, Gus ‘ Didn’t have to discuss much..,

She’d made a new Plan, Stan....,

Dropped off the key, Lee. And set herself Free.....,
