and looking at the deck. “Spock, are you upset?”

“No, Sir. I am...annoyed...at being illogically forced to repeat the
same story over and over,” stated Spock.

The lift stopped and the doors whooshed open. “Well, you can tell Komack
how annoyed you are if you want,” replied Kirk, with a smirk on his
face. “I'm going to answer his questions because I still want to be a
Captain tomorrow.”

They walked around the corridor till they reached the VIP quarters. Kirk
pushed the chime and the door opened. Admiral Komack was seated at a
small desk and historian T'Prell was seated next to him. Spock gave her
the Vulcan salute and she returned it. Kirk bowed slightly in her
direction.

George Komack was 58, white haired, and was 6' 6” tall. He was a former
Starship Captain and for the last 12 years, has been running Fleet
Operations from Star Fleet Command on Earth. He was the only Starship
commander that rivaled Kirk in commendations. He was also a brilliant
negotiator.

Somehow, Kirk felt there was going to be little talking on this mission.

T'Prell was a short woman with a rather exotic look about her. She was
dark complexioned and Mediterranean in appearance.

“Gentlemen,” Komack began, “I want to go over your deposition one more
time before we reach the rendezvous point. Please have a seat,” he said
while motioning with his hand. Kirk and Spock sat on the Admirals'
bunk. “I've gone over all your logs, recordings, and sensor readings
from your encounter. I still have a few questions,” he said, as Kirk
looked at Spock, who had rested his elbows on his knees and folded his
hands in front of his face. He was staring directly ahead at nothing.

“George, Spock and I have been over this at least a dozen times. I doubt
our memories are getting any fresher,” said Kirk, shaking his head.

“I understand, but I still have some questions,” Komack responded. “Mr.
Spock, you indicated in your deposition that it was your belief that
this incursion into Federation space and the subsequent destruction of
our outposts was a prelude to a full invasion, assuming their ship had
been successful and returned home. Are you still of the same opinion?”

Spock shifted in his seat and locked eyes with the Admiral. He didn't
expect to be questioned first. “Yes, Admiral. A ship with the ability
to cloak itself could not have been sent on the mission simply as a
lark or by a renegade commander,” answered Spock.

“I agree, Sir,” said, Kirk. “The Romulan Commander was too well versed
in tactics to be a rogue. He came very close to destroying the
Enterprise and finishing off our line of outposts. That would have
given them several light years of unprotected border to cross. By the
time we would have realized what was happening they would have been
entrenched in this entire sector, giving them a launching point for an
invasion of Earth,” added Kirk.

Komack looked back at his notes and scribbled a few words. “This has
been bothering us at headquarters, you mentioned that the ship was
driven by impulse power only. We know they have warp technology. Why
was that ship not so equipped?” asked the Admiral.

“Maybe their device can only generate a small cloaking field. That may
be why they sent a small scout sized ship instead. Their mission my
have been to concentrate on taking out the outposts and returning to
Romulan space. Afterward, the larger invasion takes place using warp
driven ships without cloaks,” volunteered Spock.

“Thank you, gentlemen,” said Komack, turning back to his desk.

Kirk bowed slightly to T'Prell, and turned to Spock. “I'll meet you back
on the bridge,” as he left the room and headed down the hallway.

“T'Prell,” said Spock, “Would you mind walking with me a moment?”

She excused herself from the Admiral and they proceeded to slowly walk
down the corridor. The small woman barely made it to Spock's shoulders
in height walking next to him. She spoke first.

“Is something troubling you, Spock?” she asked in all concern.

“I know that you teach at the Vulcan Academy and I was wondering if
you've had the opportunity to meet a woman by the name of Amanda
Grayson. She teaches part time in the language department,” he asked.

“Yes, I have,” replied T'Prell, looking straight ahead.

Spock cleared his throat, not knowing how to word the next question.
“Could you tell me...how she is doing?”

T'Prell stopped walking and turned to face him. “She, who is your
Mother, is well. It troubles me Spock, that you must ask a stranger if
the woman that gave you life is well. When was the last time you have
spoken with her?”

Spock looked at the floor, knowing the reaction his response would
invoke. “Almost four years.”

T'Prell began walking again. “I'm sure she would like to know how her
only child is doing. I suppose this has something to do with you and
Sarek?”

“How do you know all this?” asked the surprised half-Vulcan.

“You are much known on Vulcan, Spock, choosing Star Fleet rather than
the Science Academy as your Father wanted. When was the last time you
conversed with him?” she asked.

“A long time,” replied Spock.

“Perhaps he has had a change of mind. You won't know unless you seek him
out,” she said, looking up at him.

“I doubt that my Father has changed his mind about my entrance to Star
Fleet. It is a subject we will never agree on, much like many other
subjects that we discussed in my youth,” he said, visibly turning red.

T'Prell knew that she had pushed the conversation to the point where it
had to be changed, but she had one more thing to say. “Do not hold the
grudge you bear for your Father against your Mother, for she is the
only one you will ever have. Now, I grow tired, and will return to my
room.” She gave the Vulcan salute. “Live long and prosper, Spock.”

Spock returned the salute. “Peace, and long life.” He watched as she
walked down the corridor and rounded the bend toward the turbo lift. He
needed to report back to the bridge. On his way, he thought about what
T'Prell had said. He had heard this argument from several humans before
regarding his relationship with his mother, but never from a Vulcan. It
was difficult for him to find a reason to open a dialog with her now,
after four years of silence. His logical side was telling him to wait
for a reason. His human half wanted to see her face and hear her words,
badly. He decided to give it real consideration.

But not right now.

************

Dr. McCoy was filling out a report when Kirk strolled in.

“Well, Jim, come for that physical you've been ducking?” asked McCoy, as
he put his clipboard and stylus down.

Kirk and McCoy's friendship went back about ten years after a new
surgeon named Leonard H. McCoy saved a young Ensign Kirk's life.
Shortly after he helped McCoy through a difficult divorce from his wife
Jocelyn. He knew that his daughter Joanna was now the driving force in
his life. McCoy wrote to her everyday.

He and McCoy kept in touch over the years until Kirk finally got his
first command. He didn't hesitate a second to recruit McCoy as his
chief surgeon and psychologist.

“Ah, no, Bones. I wanted to make sure you have everything you need
here,” answered Kirk, while looking around.

“Why? You know something I don't? I thought we were ferrying the Admiral
to oversee the completion of the new outposts. That's not what we're
doing, is it?” asked the Doctor.

“I don't know, Bones. Better safe than sorry. Is there anything you
need?” he asked.

“No,” answered McCoy.

Kirk nodded his head to McCoy and left, heading for engineering.

************

Lt. Commander Montgomery Scott was halfway inside a Jeffries tube when
Kirk arrived. As Chief Engineer, he was responsible for driving the
starship. By way of rank he was second in command after Spock.

“Mr. Scott,” Kirk said.

“Aye, Sir,” came the answer from inside the tube.

“What's the status here?” Kirk asked.

Scotty slid down out of the tube and faced his Captain.

“Everything is in top condition, Sir. The new shielding we received at
Starbase 12 is installed, and the extra photon torpedoes are stored.
The upgrades on the phaser circuits have been completed, so there
should no more burnouts. We also have finished installing the new
dilithium crystals. That alone will increase power on all levels,”
stated Scott.

“You got all this done in four days?” asked Kirk.

“Aye,” said Scotty, with a grin on his face.

“You've earned your pay this week, Mr. Scott,” said Kirk, as he left
engineering.

“I had it done 2 days ago,” chuckled Scotty to himself.

************

Kirk was eating a chicken sandwich in his quarters, when a call came
over the Comm system. “Bridge to Captain Kirk.”

Kirk leaned over and punched the Comm button. “Kirk here.”

“Sulu, Captain. We are arriving at the rendezvous point.”

“Very well, inform Admiral Komack. I'll be on the bridge in a moment,”
he replied, as he took the last of the sandwich and wolfed it down.

When he arrived on the bridge, he found that Komack had beaten him
there. On the view screen was the just completed outpost, and the image
of 8 other starships at various distances from it.

Turning to Uhura, Komack said, “Lieutenant, please open a channel to the
other ships.” Uhura pushed a few buttons and nodded her head to him.

“This is Komack. All ship commanders are to report to the Enterprise in
15 minutes. Komack out.” Uhura closed the channel.

“Captain, see to it that the commanders report to the briefing room. I
intend to explain our orders then,” said Komack, as he headed to the
turbo lift.

Kirk looked at Spock, as Spock raised an eyebrow in curiosity. “I knew
something was up,” said Kirk.
