II

After Martin graduated from high school, he took an entrance exam to
Oxford University. When he got the results, I knew from his eyes that
he passed the exam. Although I should be happy for him knowing that he
passed the exam, my heart was torn in to pieces the time I heard that.
I can't imagine life without Martin. Almost all my life, I depended on
him. I was used to running to him when I have problems, to be
accompanied by him when I needed a chaperone, to be protected by him
and to be loved by somewhat, a brother (since I don't have one.). He
has always been my guardian, my best friend and my big brother. What
will I do if he leaves me? I won't have anyone to talk to when I have
problems since my mom and I are not really close and I don't have other
friend besides him.

All those thoughts kept me up late the night before his flight to
London. I don't know if I can still accompany him to the airport. What
if I don't let go of his hand when it's time for him to leave? What if
that would be the last time I'll ever see him? Although he promised
that he would come back for me, I still can't be sure if we would still
stay the same by the time he comes back.

The day of his departure has come. I still don't know what to do. I
emptied three boxes of tissues last night and my eyes are still sore
from crying. My mom knocked on my door to wake me up but I didn't open
it. She went inside my room and asked, “Aren't you going?” “I don't
know mom, I don't think I can see him leave me.” I answered.

“Come on. Show some support. You know he always wanted to study in that
school. Don't make it hard for him to leave.” She said. I was surprised
of what my mom said. I never thought that it was also hard for him. I
always thought of myself. But I haven't thought of what he would feel.
After I knew the result of his exam, I haven't talked to him that much.
I was thinking he would change his mind if I did that. But I have
forgotten that he has always dreamt of studying there.

At the airport, I saw him, waiting for me. “Hey there. I thought you
would never come.” said Martin. “How could I not?” I smiled at him.
“It's time for me to leave now.”

“Yeah, I know.”

“Here, have this.” He handed me a ring. It was a simple white gold ring
with no design on it. “Keep it. I'd be looking for that when I see you
again.” He hugged me and without looking at me, he left. I can't help
but cry that time. I felt like it was the end of my world. For nine
years, he has been by my side. I never thought this day would come. It
was hard for me to go on with my life. But I lived because I believed
that he would come back for me.

For years he hasn't contacted me. No letters, no e-mails, no calls and
no texts. It was like he was dead or something. But there was someone
who was sending me a gift on my birthdays. It was an ice cream toy. It
wasn't indicated who it was from but I knew it was from Martin. No one
would ever give me an ice cream for my birthday but him.

III

Four years have passed and I haven't even heard his voice. I was
expecting him on my graduation but he wasn't there. I have learned to
move on and continue with my life without him. Those feelings that I
have for him somehow faded. I even have a boyfriend now. He's name?
James Strait. I met him when I was enrolling at my university. He
helped me enroll (cause I didn't know how) since he's already a student
there. Yes. He's a year older than me. But there's nothing wrong with
that right?

While I was studying in my room (reviewing for my first exam the next
day), I heard my phone rang. I don't recognize the number but....

“Hello?” I said.

“How are you?” my heart dropped when I heard him talk. I knew it was
Martin. I didn't know what to answer that time. I was speechless.

For four years, I haven't heard his voice. I was longing to hear it but
when I did, I didn't know how to react. Tears started falling down my
eye. I can't stop it. “Are you doing something today? I'm here in front
of our old school and I thought I could...” before he could even finish
talking, I ran out of my room and ran as fast as I could to the place
where he was. I couldn't stop my feet from running. It was like someone
else was controlling it. I was eager to see him again. When I arrived
at our school, the first person I saw was him. I couldn't believe I
would see him again. I can't stop myself from crying that time. He went
close to me and hugged me tight.

I never realized how I missed him so much. All my feelings for him
seemed to come back again. I couldn't stop it.

“How's my little Polly?” he asked with a smile on his face.

“I-I missed you!”

“I missed you too. Going to college right now?”

“How can you talk so calmly when you know you haven't contacted me for
four years!?” I shouted. “I'm sorry. I have to do it. I'm afraid that
if I hear your voice, I would miss you so much and I'd go back here and
not finish my studies there. You do know how hard it was for me to
leave my little sister.” He replied.

“You still think of me as your little sister huh? I'm all grown-up now.
I'm seventeen and I'm not a kid anymore.”

“Even so, you're still my little sister.”

Martin looked at me seriously and noticed my necklace. “That's the ring
I gave you right? Why not wear it?”

“I just wanted it to be my pendant that's all. I thought it would look
cuter.”

But the truth is, I wanted it there so that he would be near my heart. I
wanted to feel him beside me wherever I go.

“Oh really?” he said. “Yes.” I smiled. He wiped my tears and smiled at
me. “You're more beautiful than the last time I saw you.” I was
surprised of what I heard from him. I didn't know if he was serious or
just really joking me. “Of course, I wouldn't be miserable because you
left me you know.”

“Good.”

Martin took me to a restaurant. We talked about how his life was in
London. We needed to catch up with each other, I thought. He brought me
back home and greeted my mom. “Martin! Long time no see!” my mom said.
“Hi there Mrs. Jacob!” Martin replied.

“Oh, you've grown up to be a handsome man huh?”

“Not at all.”

“How could you say that? Look at you!”

“My best friend hasn't fallen in love with me yet!” he said grinning.
Although I knew it was a joke, I still was surprised of what he said.
“I'm going to sleep now, you two talk to each other if you want to.” I
said. “What? You're sleeping now? You just saw you're best friend for
the first time after four years and you're going to sleep?!” My mom
told me. “It's okay Mrs. Jacob. I was planning to visit her tomorrow at
her school anyways.”

What!? I-is he serious? What if my boyfriend sees him?! Or what if he
sees me with my boyfriend?! Oh well, I guess it's time for him to know
anyways. It's not like he's in-love with me. I'm just his little sister
right? But I think I'm still in-love with Martin. Or is this just one
of my deep infatuations? Oh! I don't know what my feelings are now that
he's back!

IV

“Pauline? Pauline? Are you alright?” James asked as he waved his hand in
front of my face. “Huh? Oh, yeah I-I am... I'm just thinking of
something.” I replied. “Huh? What is it? Is there anything I can do to
help you?”

“No, it's nothing. You don't have to worry about it.”

“So, let's go? I'll walk you home.”

“No! I-I mean, you don't have to. I can go home by myself.” I said. “But
I always walk you to your house right?” James was confused. “I-I need
to go to the library I have another test tomorrow that's why I need to
study.” I answered. “Okay then, I'll go with you.”

“Huh? You don't have to. I mean if you have something to do, it's okay
if you leave me.”

I could tell James was confused of how I was acting that day. I was
worried that Martin would see him. So what if Martin sees him? It's not
like he's going to be jealous of James right?

“Hey Polly!”

I was surprised of what I heard. I knew it was Martin since he was the
only one calling me Polly. I couldn't turn my back cause didn't really
want him to see James. Not now. I didn't know why but my feet
automatically moved away from Martin. “Hey! Where are you going?”
Martin grabbed my hand. “Oh, Martin! I didn't hear you. I'm sorry.” I
replied.

“Polly? Pauline, would you like to introduce your friend to me?” James
said.

“Huh? Oh, He-he's...”

“I'm her big brother slash best friend. And you? May I ask who you are?”

“I'm Pauline's boyfriend.” James replied.

Oh no! He knew it! Okay... So how will I explain it to him?

“Oh...” he said. I guess he wasn't that surprised.

“Why didn't you tell me you have a brother?” asked James. “He's not
actually my brother. It's just that he treat me as his little sister.”

“If you're her boyfriend, may I borrow her just for the whole day? I
need to spend time with her since it has been a long time since I saw
her.” Martin said. Is he irritating James? “She said she's going to the
library today, so I guess she can't go.” James replied. What!? I didn't
really mean that! I was just trying to get away from you! “Okay then,
I'll just wait for her to finish. Want me to help you Polly?” said
Martin.

“Huh? I...”

“It would be better if she study alone. That way she could concentrate.”
James said. “I-It's okay James. I...”

“I'd just go to your house later then Polly. I'll see you later.” Martin
said. “Huh? Oh, yeah... Okay, see you later.” I replied.

I went to the library and sat. What am I going to do here? I don't
actually have a test tomorrow. I guess I just have to stay here. Those
two should have left by now... “Polly.” someone whispered behind me.
When I turned, it was Martin. “I thought I'd just see you at my house?”
I asked. “Why would I do that? Do you know how hard it was for me to
get to this school?” Martin pinched my nose. “Ouch! Hey! That hurts!”

“Ssssh!” said the librarian.

“Let's get out of here. I know you're not going to study in a place like
this. You hate libraries right?” Martin grabbed my hand and took me
outside. “You still remember huh?” I said. “Of course. Come on.” He
grabbed my hand again and made me follow him.

He took me to the place where we first met. The playground. “I could
still remember you trying to introduce yourself to me.” said Martin.
“Yeah, I remember that one.” I laughed. “Anyways, why didn't you tell
me you already have a boyfriend huh!?”

“I was going to tell you that, I just forgot to...” I replied. “You're
still young and you've already got a boyfriend!?” he tapped my
forehead. “I'm already seventeen.” I replied. “You're ONLY seventeen.”
he said. Is he jealous? Maybe not. “I'm old enough to have one you
know.” I crossed my arms. “He just have to make sure that he won't hurt
my little sister or else...”

“Or else what?” I chuckled. “He's going to be really sorry.” he looked
at me. “Oooh, I'm scared.” I said sarcastically. “I'm serious. I don't
want to see my little sister crying in front of me.”

“Huh?” I didn't know what to say. “Especially when it's about a guy who
hurt you.” I was somehow touched of what he said. “Thanks.” That was
all I could say.

We talked about stuffs that we did in the playground when we were still
a kid. I never realized how much I missed playing in the playground.
I've never been here since I was thirteen. I wonder why he didn't ask
about James. Maybe he's just not interested at all. So he's not
jealous? Oh, what am I thinking?!

V

After reminiscing and talking about those times when we were kids, he
took me to the ice cream parlor near the playground. “This wasn't here
four years ago.” He said. “Yeah, it was built two years ago. It's my
first time to eat here.” I replied. “If this was built two years ago,
then why don't you eat here?” he asked. “I still prefer dirty ice
creams.” I told him.

“I could still remember when you stumbled in front of me.” Martin
remembered.

“Hey! I wasn't in front of you that time! You just saw me remember?” I
tapped his shoulder. “That's not true! You were right in front of me.”
He teased. “Yeah right.” I crossed my arms.

I wanted to ask him what he thinks about James. I wanted him to be
curious. But why do I want to anyways? Who knows...

“Want to go home?” Martin asked. “Sure. You'll walk me home right?”

“That's not what I meant. What I mean is at my house. I'm sure Dad
missed you.” He said. “Oh, yeah sure.” I replied. We went to their
house and there I saw Mr. Vandom. “Pauline! How have you been?” Mr.
Vandom said.

“I'm in college now Dad.” I replied. “Really? I never thought you'd grow
up to be a beautiful lady.” Mr. Vandom said. “Thank you for that sweet
compliment Dad.” I gave him a smile. “Don't believe him. He's just
lying.” Martin teased. I just gave him a don't-try-to-irritate-me
stare. “Okay, okay. I'm not saying anything!” Martin said.

We had fun talking and exchanging jokes. I didn't even notice the time.
It was already late and my mom told me to sleep at Martin's house since
she said that it was dangerous to walk outside. Oh well, I think that
would be okay. I don't have any class tomorrow anyways. I slept in “my
room”. Wow I missed this room. It's still how it was when I left it.
Beautiful, I still feel at home.

I woke up early and went down to eat breakfast. I miss Dad's dishes.
When I got down I saw Martin. Cooking. It's the first time I saw him
cook. As far as I know, he doesn't know how to cook. Or does he? I
could still remember him asking me to cook whenever Dad's away.

“Where's Dad?” I asked. “He's at work. That's why I'm cooking.” He
replied. “Let me do that for you.” I tried to get the ladle from him.
“It's okay don't worry. I know how to cook.” He said seriously. “Since
when did you know how to?” I asked. “Since I was about ten. Dad's not
always at home you know.” He replied. “But I'm the one who cooks for
you.” I said. “Well I just wanted to taste your dish that's all. But I
really know how to cook that time.” He looked at me and grinned. Oh, I
hate him!

“Just sit there and wait for me to finish okay?” He said.

I waited for him to finish. Oh, I'm so hungry. After waiting for a long
time, he finished cooking and he gave me a plate. Wow, what am I? A
princess with a servant? Hahahah... “Thanks.” I said and tasted the
food. Hmmm... Not bad. When we finished eating, he told me to wash the
dishes. “What!? You do know I hate to do that.” I said. “I cook, you
wash. That's simple.” He replied. “Oh, I hate you!” I stared at him.
“Okay, okay! I'll do it!” He said. I gave him a big smile. “Don't you
dare smile at me like that. Indolent!” He said. I looked at him and
laughed. He turned his back. He's irritated, I thought. We had fun the
whole day. Chatting, playing board games, and a lot of stuffs. He
walked me home and... Oh no! What is he doing here?

“James? What are you doing here?”

“I was waiting for you...” he saw Martin. “You must be with him.” He
said. “Yeah, got any problem with that?” Martin replied. Okay, what is
he trying to do? Good thing James didn't answer. “Okay, I'd just go
upstairs and change. You can go home if you want Martin. Thanks for
walking me home.” I went upstairs and straight to my room. It has been
a both tiring and happy day for me. I wanted to sleep but I remembered
James is downstairs. I changed clothes and went to the living room
where James was. I didn't see Martin. He might have left, I thought.
“Your mom told me you slept at Martin's house.” He said. “Yeah, but
it's not such a big deal you know. I have my own room over there.” I
explained. “Really? How did that happen?” he asked. He seemed really
curious. I told him everything about me and Martin. Well maybe except
the part that I had a huge crush on him.

“Oh, so you two are really close?” he asked. “Yeah, don't tell me you're
jealous.” I answered. He just smiled.

VI

“Pauline! Pauline! Wake up Pauline!” my mom shouted. “Mom it's Sunday.
No school.” I said while trying hard to open my eyes. “James is
downstairs. Don't tell me you're letting him wait again for a long
time?”

“Huh? What is he doing here?” I got up from my bed.

“I don't know. Why don't you ask him?”

I hurriedly went to the bathroom to fix myself. He can't see me like
this! I went downstairs and saw him.

“Good morning.” He greeted. “What are you doing here?” I asked. “Is that
the right way to greet your boyfriend?” he pinched my nose. “I'm
serious. What are you doing here?” I asked again. “Okay, I was just
thinking if I could spend time with you today. Would that be
necessary?” he put his hands on my shoulder.

“I guess that would be okay.” I replied.

He took me to the amusement park. Yeah this is too common. I know. “So,
what are we going to do here?” I asked. “Have fun.” He smiled.

We were eating at some food stand when my phone rang. It was Martin.

“Where are you right now?” he said.

“Wow, what a great way to greet me.” I replied. “I'm at the amusement
park. Why?”

“Oh, are you with someone?” he asked. “Yeah, I'm with James.”

“You're with him?” he asked. “Is there something wrong with that?” I
said. “Huh? Nothing, but it's a coincidence. I was just about to go
there.” “Really? Well as far as I know, you don't go to this kind of
place. And who are you going to be with anyways?”

“I'll go there alone.”

“Huh? Hello?”

He hang up. Why would he go here? I'm sure that he's not the type of
person who'd go here and have some fun.

“What's wrong?” James asked. “Nothing, you don't have to worry about
it.” I replied. “Shall we go take a ride now?” he offered his hand.
“Sure.”

We were about to leave when someone grabbed my hand. I looked to see who
grabbed my hand. It was Martin. “What are you doing here!?” I was
surprised to see him. “I told you I'm going here.” He grinned. “What
would a person like you do in this kind of place?” I put my hands on my
waist. “Hey, can't I have some fun once in a while?”

“And this is your way of having fun? Oh, that's totally not you.” I
tapped his head. “Yeah right. So, can I come with you two? That is if
it's okay for your boyfriend if I butt in.” he put his arms around
James' shoulder. What is he trying to do?

“That's fine with me. You're her older brother. I think I should know my
future brother-in-law.” James answered. Martin seemed like he's a bit
pissed. “Have you eaten yet? Cause if you ask me, I'm really hungry.”

“Well, we just finished eating. But you can eat. We'll just wait for
you.”

“What?” James said.

“If you didn't hear it, I'm going to repeat it for you. She said that
you two have to wait for me to finish eating.” Martin said.

“Maybe we could just pick him up after one ride. We can't waste our time
you know.” James insisted. “I think that's a great idea. We'll just
come back here after a ride okay?” I said.

“What!? You'll leave me here? No way! I'm coming with you two!” James
shouted. “I thought you're hungry?” I asked. “Well I'm not anymore.
Let's go.” What's with him?

“Oh no you won't. You have to eat there. Don't worry we'll be back in a
few minutes okay?” I said.

James and I left him while he was eating.

“Now what will they do?” Martin whispered.

We came back after a few minutes and... “What took you two so long?”
James interrogated. “How's your food?” I replied. “You're not answering
my question.” He stared at me. He looked serious. “We just lost track
of time that's all. And we were only away for twenty minutes.” I
replied.

“So, where do you want to go first?” James looked at me. “Let's play
first. There.” I pointed at one of the game booth.

“What prize do you want Pauline? I'll get it for you.” James said. “That
one.” I pointed at the big bear. “I'll get it for you too.” Martin
said.

What's with his attitude this day? Is he... Jealous? Probably not.

Well there they were. Playing. But it seemed like it was more of a
competition.

“Here.” They both said while showing me the big prize that they've got.
“Wow, two big bears. That's better than I expected.” I gave them both a
big smile.

Well the whole time that we were at the park, they were always like in a
competition. And right now, I'm still wondering why they're like that.

It was kind of late so we had to go home. “I'll take you home.” They
both said. “Okay, I can go home by myself okay? I'd just take a cab so
don't you two worry about me. I'll just see you two tomorrow okay?” I
left and went inside the cab.

VII

“Seems like you had fun.” My mom greeted me. I just smiled at her.

I went straight to my room and lay down my bed thinking of what happened
the whole day. Martin was really acting kind of weird today. Actually,
both of them was. Maybe Martin's just not used to seeing me with a guy.
He was the only guy I talked to back when we were kids. He can't be
like jealous as in jealous out of love, right?

Those thoughts kept me up all night and I almost forgot that I have a—oh
no! Test! I hurriedly went to the bathroom and rushed out of my house
without even saying goodbye to my mom. Oh no! I didn't even review!

When I arrived at the school, the first person I saw was James. “Stop
right there!” he put his hands on my shoulder. “Get out of my way!” I
pushed him away. “Hey! What's with the hurry?” he asked. “I have a test
today and if I arrive late, I swear I'm going to kill you.” I gave him
a don't-irritate-me-cause-I'm-serious look. He laughed. “And what's
with that laugh?” I asked. “Don't worry your teacher's absent.” He
said, laughing. “And how did you know that?”

“Well, my teacher's not around because he had a heart attack so I went
to your classroom and I found out that your professor's absent.” He
replied. “Your professor's got a heart attack? That's tragic.”

“Well they said that someone's going to replace him for the mean time.”

“Really? Who might that be?” I asked. “They said he's a twenty-year-old
fresh graduate from Oxford University.” He replied. “It's a he? Wow. I
wish I was in your class.” I gave him a grin. “Ha! Ha! Very funny!” he
smiled sarcastically.

“Well, let's eat. I'm kind of hungry.” He said. “I've got to pass. I
need to study for my test and I'm going to need a tutor.” I replied.
“I'm here. I could be your tutor.” He volunteered. “Yeah right, Science
is like your least favorite subject.” I pointed at his forehead. “Oh,
Science's your exam? I guess I really can't help you with that. Don't
worry, I'll try to get you one.” He said. “No thanks, I have someone in
my mind.” I replied. “And who might that be?” he asked. “Oh, just
someone I know who can really help me. I've got to go, bye!” I left him
and walked towards the gate. I dialed Martin's number.

“Hello?” Martin answered his phone. “Hey, it's me. I need a help.” I
said. “Anything for my little sister.” He replied. “Where are you?” I
asked. “At my house, why?” he answered. “Wait for me, I'll go there.” I
hang up and got a cab.

I arrived at his house pretty much early than I expected. “That was
fast. You just called right?” he said. “I really need your help,
please?” I put my hands together and begged him. “Yeah, what is it
anyway?” he asked. “I have a test and I need a tutor.” I replied. “And
that tutor would be me right?” he said. “Exactly.” I grinned.

He tutored me the whole day (since my supposed-to-be-test was my only
subject for this day). Wow, he's just like a teacher. “By the way, I'm
going to work tomorrow.” He said. “Really? That's great! Where?” I
asked. “Oh, you'll know it soon. But for now, it's a secret.” He
pinched my cheeks. “Oh, I wonder what it is.” I replied. “It's just a
temporary work anyways. I just did someone a favor.” He said. “Oh, look
at the time. I need to go home. My mom might be looking for me right
now.” I told him. “Want me to walk you home?” he asked. “No thanks.
You've got to prepare for your work tomorrow right? I'll just go by
myself.” I answered him.

The day after, (James' encounter)

“Good morning. I'll be teaching you while your professor's at the
hospital. I'm Martin Vandom but you can just call me Mr. Vandom. That
way I'll know I'm a teacher.” He smiled.

“He's the new teacher?” James was surprised. “Oh, I see Mr. Strait's one
of my students. This should be fun.”

VIII

“What!? Martin's your new teacher?” I was surprised. “Yeah, I couldn't
believe it either.” James sighed. “So that's what his work was!” I
chuckled. “What are you laughing at?” James asked. “Nothing, it's just
that he told me yesterday that he already has a job.”

“So you know that he would be my teacher?” James asked. “I wouldn't be
surprised if I knew that already.” I pointed on his forehead. “Wait,
what do you mean he told you yesterday? I thought you were busy
studying?” he interrogated. “Yeah, I was studying yesterday. With him.”
I answered.

“You were with him?!” he exclaimed. “Yeah, I was with him. Is there
something wrong with that?” I answered. “I could've just taught you
myself.”

“Yeah right, like you would. And besides, Martin's your new teacher in
Science. Trust me, you'll learn a lot from him.” I grinned.

“Oh look at the time! It's 1:30! You wouldn't want to be late in
Martin's class right?” I pushed him away.

“I watched him walk towards the building. He seemed like he didn't
really want to go to his class. I wonder why...

*On Martin's side!*

James went inside the classroom. Slowly. He didn't even greet his
teacher. “You're late Mr. Strait.” Martin greeted. “Yeah I know, you
don't have to tell me that.”

Martin didn't say anything.

Everything went fine in the class discussion. It was fine until, “Mr.
Strait, could you tell me a short summary about chapter fifteen?”
Martin said. James couldn't answer. Science was his least favorite
subject. He even almost failed the last test in that subject. Instead
he answered, “How can a guy who's just two years older than me be my
teacher?!”

“Martin was surprised. “Why don't you go ask you professor about it?” he
answered.

“And please do remember Mr. Strait, I'm still your teacher and I'll be
the one to grade you. So if you don't want to fail this subject, study
hard and cooperate with me.” Martin smiled.

It's three o'clock. “Time to end the class.” Martin said to himself.
“Before I dismiss this class, I'd like to leave a special assignment to
Mr. Strait. Since you didn't answer my question earlier, I'd like you
to make an outline about the fifteenth chapter.”

“What!? Chapter fifteen is like thirty pages!” James thought.

“Class dismissed.” Martin said finally.

James was the first one to leave the class. “James!” Martin called.
James stopped and moved back to the classroom. He didn't have any
expression on his face. He was just staring at Martin. “I just want you
to know that I don't want a disrespectful person for my best friend.”
Martin grabbed his bag and walked towards the door.

“Do you like her?” James asked. “I have always liked her.” Martin
continued walking.

After a few minutes...

“How's class?” I asked. “It was great! I have bunch of assignment on my
first day with him!” James smiled sarcastically. “Oh, you're being too
naïve. It's normal that he give an assignment to his student.” I said.

“Me? Naïve? Oh, you don't know what you're saying.”

“Oh come on, do you really hate him that much?” I asked. “Who said I
hate him? You'll see. I'm going to top his class.” James said. Wow, he
looks really determined about it. “Okay, whatever you say.” I looked
away and saw Martin. He seemed serious. I wonder what he's thinking
about.
