“Well while I was working over there I kind of took up with this girl in
the time keeper's office.” 

“Dan I don't want to know about anything I have to keep from Betty.” 

“Well brother this might be one little thing like that.  I need you to
know about this so if I pass you can go talk to them.” 

“Them you are about to tell me you had more than one girl friend when
you were over there.  You were married to Betty then right.  You need 
to clear this up for me Dan and I mean right now before we take another 
step.” 

“Ok just don't talk for a minute and let me explain.  What you never
knew, was that before I left Betty was talking about getting a devoice 
or leaving me if I went out of state to work.  I was pretty sure it was 
over for Betty and me so I sort of got tight with this girl.  She had 
been married and already had a little boy.  She was a very nice person 
and...  Well hell anyway, I got to liking having her and the kid around 
after work.  The next thing I knew he was calling me Daddy.  So now, 
there you have it.  We never talked even once about getting married; we 
never set up housekeeping or anything.  She was a nice lady and I would 
sure like her to know about it if I don't come through this rough patch 
or afterward you have to do the right thing to keep me from living as a 
vegetable.  I'll write down her name and where you can look her up and 
a couple of other things you will need to know just in case.” 

“Hello, is this Alice Ward?  Ms Ward my name is Bert Johnson and I need
to come by your office this afternoon and have a word with you.  No 
Mama it is not something we can work out over the phone in fact, it is 
sort of personal.  Yes Mama Three o'clock is fine with me.” 

“Ms Ward I think you may remember my younger brother that worked over at
the power plant construction site several years back.  You do remember. 


Good I'm happy you remember because that makes what I about to tell you
a lot simpler.  I have come here with some news about my brother and to 
give you this life insurance policy he took out several years ago 
naming you and your son Danny as beneficiaries.”
