The fourth poem in my child abuse series. Which one is the woman? Is she now a warrior woman? Or does she remain a withdrawn waif?

No matter the mood she ate.

Achieved her goal of wedging a canyon

between herself and the real world.

In her fantasies she was untouchable.

No one looked passed the exterior

to see a raging, depressed, damaged bull.

~

Three years goes by and it got worse.

On her fourteen birthday she was raped.

The boy liked the bravo and wouldn't take no.

It was another scab that needed to be taped.

Oh how she longed for a joint that night.

Something, anything to make her forget.

Her own mother didn't believe the story.

The girl could lie without breaking a sweat.

~

Food was once again her best friend.

Over two hundred the scales now read.

Her mother's worry brought her to the doctors.

Gave the girl pills to help the pounds shed.

At sixteen she was an social outcast.

Everyone liked her, but no one wanted a date.

She had a few close friends and a number of acquaintances.

High school boys were put off by her weight.

~

I can't describe what the girl went through.

My mind refuses to believe she is me.

The abuse I heaped on myself is something

I don't want to dig up in my memory.

Yet what I did, physically and emotionally,

scarred me more than any man.

What hurts the most, the worst, is

because it was done by my own hands.
