kind of sorry for you.

MIKE You called Megan though right?

CHRIS Hell no. I'm still the master of my own destiny. I still control
what I do when I do it, and no one else is going to control me. I call
her when I feel like talking, and If I don't feel like it, I don't
call, it is as simple as that. I didn't feel like talking, so I didn't
call, I don't need to check in with her, and make sure that she is ok.
She is a normal person that can take care of herself, and I know this,
if I want to see her I call...it is a very good relationship.

MIKE Well I love Christi.

CHRIS I care about Megan, I simply said that I don't need to call her
every single day of my life. I do care about her, but the fact of the
matter is, if I become a slave like you, I feel that I have lost all
the qualities that makes me, me. And if I lose those, she soon loses
interest, because I am not the guy she liked, and asked out. So if I
change, I lose her. I feel I got her this way, this is the way to keep
her. And this love stuff? It doesn't exists in high school.

MIKE You are one messed up guy.

CHRIS I like to think of myself as a legendary character.

MIKE You're a character all right.

CHRIS You know you want to be just like me.

MIKE I want to be just like me.

CHRIS Which in turn is just a cheap rip off of me.

Mike shakes his head.

MIKE Let's go man.

CHRIS Alright...i'm bored, lets get something to eat.

MIKE Where?

CHRIS Rob is meeting us at his uncle's place.

MIKE Let's go then

They get up, Chris leaves a few dollars on the table.

SCENE C- EXT. Restaurant-Day Shot outside of the restaurant. Mike and
Chris walk inside. They head in and sit by ROB

ROB How are you two guys?

MIKE He is on a rant day.

ROB Great.

CHRIS It isn't a rant day, I am simply pointing out facts.

ROB That is a rant.

CHRIS You're point?

ROB What was it this time?

MIKE My relationship

ROB You still have one of those?

MIKE Two years now.

ROB Damn, you haven't married her yet.

MIKE I think I'll wait till I find a full time job, and make at lest
more then 400 bucks a month, besides I think I should look at college
before I marry her.

ROB It was a joke man, but you are thinking about it?

MIKE Yeah

CHRIS Oh Mike man no. Don't do this to yourself man, you got to get out
there and play some more. You met this girl freshman year. Now you are
a Junior and you want to marry her. She is the first girl you have
known. Besides you aren't even sleeping with her.

ROB That why he wants to marry her.

MIKE No, come on. I do not. That's not why. I, I really love her.

CHRIS Man you are seventeen, you don't know love man. This is high
school love. Girls in high school will date anyone as long as it means
they have a boyfriend. Except for the hot ones, they like to toy with
you.

ROB And you are complaining man, you are the most popular guy in school,
you have girls ripping your pants off.

CHRIS I beg to differ. Carl is more popular than me, and they don't rip
them off, I have never had a pair of pants ripped...more like pulling.
But that doesn't change anything. Rob man, you were new here last year,
you hung out with us, and now look at you, you have more girls then I
do.

ROB That's cause they had you already and now know what and asshole you
are.

CHRIS Granted. But it still stands. Mike man you are besides two of the
most popular guys in school. And you stick it out with the girl that no
one knows of. Jesus man, the only reason people know her cause she is
your girlfriend man. I think you need to come to a decision If you love
her, you stay with her, but if you don't, you should step back for a
bit and enjoy who you are man. People dream of being you.

MIKE Let me think about it.

CHRIS There you go man.

ROB So what's the plan tonight?

CHRIS Carl is still partying, it has been going on since Tuesday. We are
going to hit that, but I don't want to go yet, I would rather chill out
for a bit.

ROB Well, I'm not even hungry man, let's head back to my house.

CHRIS Mike, let's go rent videos, then we'll head back to see you man.

ROB sounds good.

They all get up and leave.

SCENE D-INT. Video Store-Day

Mike and Chris walk in, and head into the isles.

MIKE I don't get you man, why do you dump good girls that like you?

CHRIS Because I like to be me, I like to just have as much fun as
possible without getting any diseases or hurting to many people.

MIKE Sounds like fun.

CHRIS It is, and name one good girl I dumped.

MIKE Katie.

CHRIS I couldn't use her man, she is...to pop culture.

MIKE What?

CHRIS You know me man, you have known me for ten years now, so you know
how I think. I am not going to sit around with a dimb witted girl who
doesn't like my opinions. I rarely get with girls man, and when I do it
is because I am getting something in return, either love, or some other
satisfaction like...whatever it's very beautiful. I got nothing from
her. She didn't click with me, we clashed majorly. I have opinions she
doesn't. I'm Misfits and She's Brittany Spears. Very sorry here but I
am not going to pretend that I liked her for her musical tastes.

MIKE She has opinions.

CHRIS On how things look or feel, not on real issues.

MIKE And real issues are what? How much your create-a-players make on
Madden?

CHRIS Hey, my guys always lead the league in their fields. I just think
4.5 million isn't enough for their pure talent.

MIKE Ok she doesn't get your tirades on the Catholic church and
Hollywood. So what?

CHRIS That's me man. That's who I am. I can't help it that I think Keanu
Reeves is the biggest sellout of all time. That's just me. She thinks
he is cute.

MIKE I get what you are saying but her and I talk all the time about
real issues.

CHRIS Mike man, from music to movies to even TV, she just buys into what
they tell her. I mean I try to talk about great movies and she looks at
me, and I know she hasn't seen them.

MIKE So watch them with her.

CHRIS I tried, but she doesn't get it.

MIKE What did you watch?

CHRIS Swingers, Dogma, Clerks, Good Will hunting...the classics.

MIKE And?

CHRIS No response. Might as well watched SLC Punk man, she didn't get
them at all.

MIKE Fine, let's go, I can't find anything.

CHRIS All right.

They walk out.

SCENE E-INT. Robs house-Day

Rob and Mike sit on the couch playing a video game as Chris sits in a
chair throwing a ball against the wall.

CHRIS All I am saying is that Pop music is just that, popular music. It
isn't a style of music. You can be any type of music and it still can
be pop music. Pop is everything, from Rock to Rap to Jazz. Whatever is
popular at the time. The Beatles were pop, cause they were popular.
David Bowie was pop, because he was popular. The Sex Pistols were Pop,
but the Sex Pistols were Punk first, then they were popular. Today
bands are popular first.

ROB So you are saying it isn't good to be popular today.

CHRIS I'm saying, be popular, get the money, make the cheese, but not at
the expense of the music. Be true to that first. Jerry Only said "I've
always tried to be the best, putting money and fame in the background.
It makes what I've done very real. Most people can't grasp that. The
things this band has earned cannot be bought...stolen...or transferred
on a piece of paper. I couldn't sell it if I wanted to. It doesn't come
in a jar off the shelf or from some gimmick on a TV show....It is
innate"

ROB And I get that. But how do you know that pop bands today aren't
trying to be the best first, and not popular.

CHRIS Because if you listen to the music, it is one redundant piece of
trash, same lyrics, same melody, same everything. Great bands challenge
themselves. Plus they write their own music.

MIKE So just because a band doesn't write it's own songs, that makes
them lower.

CHRIS No no, it is the attitude they have to. Talent doesn't mean much.
Jim Morison was not the greatest singer, but his Charisma got him by.
Bob Dillan wasn't the greatest singer either, but what he had was great
lyrics, and balls, and people followed. Today, bands thrive on how good
they can sing. Just because you hit the highest note, doesn't make you
great, it takes more then that.

ROB But people follow bands today.

CHRIS They follow them cause they are told to by MTV and the brain
washing of pop culture. People follow bands because they are told to,
and bombarded with their images. You think if Ice Ice Baby wasn't
played on MTV fifty times a day, people would have listened to it. No,
cause today, you can't find a Vanilla Ice fan, but someone bought the
records.

MIKE So you are saying that MTV and TV in general is brainwashing the
youth of America? CHRIS Brainwashing? No, but what they are doing, is
making Kids believe that these bands are great. Granted there are a few
good bands out here that work hard and write great music. But Pop music
in general is a load of crap.

MIKE here he goes.

ROB Jeez, you don't ever stop do you man?

CHRIS Only when I sleep.

ROB Well, I want to head to this party soon, and see if I can find any
hot girls.

CHRIS You don't think there will be any?

ROB Well I know there will be, but I am looking for one I haven't seen
naked already

CHRIS Good point.

MIKE Chris, man, you have a girlfriend.

CHRIS So?

MIKE So, you have a girlfriend and you shouldn't cheat on her.

CHRIS Oh Mike man, you got to get over this. Remember what I said, I do
what I want.

ROB Yeah man, I got a girlfriend and I am still going after them.

CHRIS you got a girlfriend?

ROB Kaite.

CHRIS How could you date her, she is mentally slower then fifty percent
of the population. She is a fucking teeny bopper.

ROB Well I have this way of solving that. And time she opens her mouth
to speak, I shove my tongue in it.

CHRIS Does she do the thing with...

ROB Her toes?

Chris nods.

ROB(cont) Disgusting man.

CHRIS Come on guys let's get out. we got allot of ground to cover.

SCENE F- INT. HOUSE NIGHT

Chris and Rob stand with their backs to a wall

CHRIS No no, you see it's different then his other movies. The beauty of
Clerks and Mallrats was because of the ordinary situations and
conversations. I.E. the Jedi Death Star conversation in Clerks, and the
Mallrats superman and Lois Lane sex issue. You see? Now in Dogma, the
beauty is how out of the ordinary the script is. He threw down three
scripts about normal guys, then makes a script that is so out there
that is funny.

ROB But I wanted the speak easy conversations and the normal situations.

CHRIS Yeah I guess but that happens sometimes. Right Mike? Mike?

Rob reaches down and grabs Mike by the hair and pulls him up.

ROB You're buddy has had way to much to drink.

CHRIS Keep and eye on him for like five minutes. I'll be right back.

Chris leaves.

ROB I'm not staying here while he parties. (To off screen) Wassup baby!

Rob leaves as Mike slides down the wall.

SCENE G INT HOUSE NIGHT

Chris stands buy a girl talking to her. Rob walks by with another girl
on his arm.

CHRIS Rob!

ROB What?

CHRIS Come here.

Rob lets the girl go after giving her a kiss and walks over to Chris.
The girl Chris is talking to slaps Rob in the face and walks off.

ROB What was that about?

CHRIS (Laughing a bit) That was Sara Wilkins

ROB So?

CHRIS You dated her for like a month

ROB Oh..(Confused) Did I get any?

CHRIS You two fooled around and then she never saw you again.

ROB That would explain it.

CHRIS Don't worry man, Where's Mike?

ROB I dunno, I left.

CHRIS Why?

ROB I had things to do.

CHRIS I told you to wait like five minutes.

ROB I am not letting you get all the girls while I baby-sit your friend.

CHRIS What girls?

ROB You had Sara.

CHRIS That's my cousin, I introduced you two.

ROB Really?

CHRIS Yes, and she is friends with Carl, I was getting a ride for him.

ROB Oh...sorry man.

CHRIS Oh don't worry, I'll find him.

SCENE H EXT HOUSE-NIGHT

Out side the house Mike stumbles over to a random girl.

MIKE Hello.

GIRL Hi

MIKE How are you?

GIRL I'm fine. you?

MIKE Life sucks

GIRL Why?

MIKE Girlfriend

GIRL Oh you get dumped?

MIKE No..still have her.

GIRL Oh you are having problems then?

MIKE I am, she isn't.

GIRL What's wrong?

MIKE My buddy says the relationships in high school aren't worth it.
They don't last.

GIRL Well no, not always But do you love her?

MIKE Love doesn't exists in high school.

GIRL Why say that?

MIKE Cause people in high school aren't capable of love. They are to
immature to get their feelings straight. Love is an emotion that is to
big for people our age to grasp it is...way to powerful

GIRL Well I care about my boyfriend.

MIKE Caring and loving are two totally different things. I care about
people allot, but love is a completely different emotion and thing. I
mean you can care deeply about a person, a friend, but that doesn't
make it love. Love is this ideal emotion that kids strive for but wont
find.

GIRL That's very pessimistic.

MIKE No, no, it is a realist way to look at it, I look at it in Real
terms.

GIRL Well what about family, you love them right?

MIKE Well yeah, but that's because they raised me and gave me life.

GIRL But you love them, so love exists.

MIKE What I meant was between two teenagers. Two people in high school
that try to date and make something of it. It is ridiculous to think
that love can exist between two people who aren't even old enough to
drive. It is an idealistic notion yes, but not intelligent. Not thought
through. People today see love as something everyone can and will
experience. What kids have is in between infatuation and love, but it
is an emotion.

GIRL That is very interesting. I think I have to go now.

The Girl walks away as Mike smiles to himself.

SCENE I- INT HOUSE NIGHT

Chris and Rob search for Mike as he staggers over to them.

CHRIS Where were you man?

MIKE Out.

CHRIS Funny man, we gotta jet though.

MIKE Why?

ROB Cheer leading squad just came in, and they don't look happy, and we
might be the targets.

MIKE All right man, this place is dead anyway.

SCENE J EXT CAR-NIGHT

Mike lays on the hood of the car as Chris searches for keys.

MIKE I found out what you meant man.

CHRIS What?

MIKE About relationships. I finally got it.

CHRIS Hey Rob, go inside and look for the keys man.

ROB All right.

Rob leaves. CHRIS Now what about these relationships

MIKE I am breaking up with Christi

CHRIS (with a smile) All right, why?

MIKE Cause of what you said man. About relationships and love. How love
doesn't exist in high school.

CHRIS Mike man, don't base it on what I said to you. What I said goes
for me and me alone. You're different then me.

MIKE No, I want to be like you. Live like you do. You're mellow and
don't need girls.

CHRIS Mike I am me because of what I have been through. You are Mike,
not Chris. You are your own person. Be you man, if you were like me,
then who would be you?

MIKE We don't need me.

CHRIS We don't? Who is Rob or me going to come to? Who is going to hold
everything up with his pessimistic view. Who is going to be my best
friend man? Just because you think I am a great guy doesn't mean you
need to follow me. Just be you man. That's good enough for me, and
should be for you.

MIKE Chris you are what guys like me what to be. Unbreakable.

CHRIS (Chuckles) Unbreakable? Mike I was broken, smashed, diced, and
chopped into little pieces. And not once but two times.

MIKE What happened?

CHRIS I thought I'd fallen in love. What was real was I wanted this girl
for what I thought was good. you know, what I enjoyed about her. I
didn't love her as a whole. I loved her as an idea, something I
couldn't reach. Now I cared, and do care for her. I love her as a close
friend, but that love? No. Not real. And that broke me.

MIKE And number two?

CHRIS I got what I wanted. A beautiful girl that won me over from the
first glimpse. She erased memories for me. Became what I needed. I
cared and do care for her. I got this one. And I was happy. For the
first time, I was happy.

MIKE And?

CHRIS She wasn't. She decided she wanted out. I didn't though, but to
make her happy I let her go. I cried, hell I lied and said I didn't to
look like I didn't care. But I did. I mean, I really really did. I
missed her. I miss all of her. Her face, smile, voice,
smell...Everything. Even the bad things. The way she stole my phrases,
or made me feel like an idiot. I missed that. Was it love? Debatable.
But I did care for her, and wanted just to be around her. I didn't want
to sleep with her, I mean she was cute, but all I wanted was to just be
around her, be near her. Call it love, call it lust, call it whatever.
I call it an emotion. I call it being me and living without fear for
those few months. Can you do that?

MIKE No I can't.

Rob comes on screen and holds up keys.

ROB Found them

CHRIS Let's go.

SCENE K INT. COFFEE SHOP-DAY

Mike walks into the coffee shop wearing T-shirt and shorts, and heads
over to Chris, who sits in the back, with his cup of coffee and wears a
pair of shorts and a T-shirt. Mike sits down across from Chris.

CHRIS So why am I here?

MIKE I thought about what you said last night. you know, about me being
my own person. You're right. I need to just be me.

CHRIS See. I know what's good for you man. So you are staying with
Christi then...

MIKE No we broke up.

CHRIS Why?

MIKE The whole love doesn't exist in high school thing got me thinking
too. I realized what you were trying to do, you just wanted to get me
thinking. You didn't mean that I should dump my girlfriend, you just
wanted me to question everything, and then see if I could get the
realism around me. So I questioned it. My love, I questioned. I finally
got it. Love doesn't exist in high school on a grand scale. Almost
every case is nothing but a sham, but there is that one or two cases of
real love. The problem is trying to get through it and find the few
cases. You can if you try hard enough. I found that love in high school
is a mixture of teenagers in adolescence trying to be adults. Using
this emotion as a passage to adulthood. Well, what we developed is this
puppy love. Not real love, but an emotion. A connection with the other
teenager, finding something you both can feel, both can be apart of. We
are also bombarded with pop culture's TV and movie love. John Houghs'
films and teenage love stories that all work out in the end. Well, we
take these two factors, and come to the conclusion that love can and
does exist in every high school kids life. Well, Ferris Beuhlar doesn't
get away, and Kim doesn't get to kiss her Conrad Birdy. Love doesn't
always exist for every down trodden, depressed youth. Some of us make
it out with out feeling love, and some lose it. I lost it. I loved
Christi, but I am only seventeen. It isn't time for love. It is time to
be me, and time to live without fear for these last few high school
months.

CHRIS That's it?

MIKE Yeah, I'm done.

CHRIS (Shrugs to himself) I'll buy that. Let's go, it's day four, and I
want to stop buy Rob's man.

MIKE and Chris get up to leave.

CHRIS(cont) Hey, uh, mike.

MIKE yeah?

CHRIS I'm proud of you man.

MIKE Yeah, I'll buy that.

CHRIS (nods to himself) yeah..Let's jet.

Mike and Chris walk out.

FADE OUT.
