PART 2 - CH 3

THREE

A day later, having put a couple of million space miles between them and
the battle site, Kane ordered a decrease in speed until they were just
drifting along.

“The planet Modas isn't too far ahead,” Muslik reminded him. “We'll have
to begin our curve away from it soon.”

“Yeah, I know,” said Kane. “I want the Cloaker and all weapons recharged
before we start the curve, just in case. Miller wants to check out some
minor damage in the Docking Bay as well. If we drift along just now to
recharge and let Miller carry out the repairs we should be ready if
anything happens.

Muslik nodded. “Sounds like a good idea,” he agreed.

Sinto strolled over and threw an arm round Miller's shoulders. “Come
on,” he said, “I'll give you a hand with the repair.”

“As long as you don't kill me if I can't get it fixed,” Miller said,
grinning.

Sinto roared with laughter and half-carried Miller off the Bridge.

“I'll come too!” yelled Blaze and raced after them.

Kane watched them go. “Time to have a word with Tyler,” he said.
“Connect me to him on the Earth Monitor,” he told Muslik.

Muslik nodded and bent over his console. Shortly afterwards Tyler
appeared on the small Earth Monitor. He was in his secret room in Fleet
HQ.

“I think you have some news for me,” he said to Kane, coming straight to
the point.

“Yeah I have,” Kane replied. “Miller's down in the Docking Bay carrying
out a repair.

Tyler frowned. “Is that it?”

“Don't you want to know what caused the problem?”

“I already know,” Tyler said, an arrogant smile on his face. “Remember,
I have secret cameras all over the Ship plus Talis reports to me every
night.”

Kane shot Talis a hard look but she ignored him and concentrated on
piloting.

“So you know you've lost the Serval?” Kane went on

“Ah yes, an unfortunate occurrence,” Tyler replied. “Still, the Fleet
loses Ships all the time.”

“Why did it attack us?”

Tyler hesitated. For once he looked uncomfortable. There was no way
round it. “Because I put out a warning about a stolen Fleet Ship.
Yours.”

“What the hell for?”

Muslik removed his short stemmed pipe from his mouth and smiled. “As
part of his plan to protect him and The Inner Council,” he said. “We're
now in a stolen Fleet Ship. Nothing can connect us to the mission.”

“Bastard!” hissed Kane. “Was Muslik correct?”

“I'm afraid so,” Tyler replied.

“That means if we run into any other Fleet Ships they could attack us as
well,” said Muslik.
