Shiver - Final Part

Freya G.

Claire didn't sleep the whole night. The wedding started at nine in the
morning. The make-up lady was obviously furious to see her with dark
circles on her eyes. She dabbed her extra thick and made sure Claire
looked like she just got out of the shower.

Claire looked at herself in the mirror. Her mother always made sure they
got the best for their money, and indeed it was a flawless make up. If
only it could wiped her sadness under it.

‘Ready, Claire?' Shari asked. She turned around to see her sister
looking so gloriously pretty in her wedding dress. Most parts of her
went numb.

‘Yes. Let's go' her answer was dry.

The moment the chapel door was opened in front of them, panic attacked
Claire. She couldn't hear anything but her own heart pounding ever so
loudly in her eardrums. Her steps were heavy and so were the ring box
and the bouquet in her hands. She dared not lifted her head. She kept
staring at her father's back as he walked Shari to the altar.

Chris saw her although she tried her best to hide herself behind her
father's back. It oddly felt like to him like she was the bride and
Shari was just the flower girl.

Claire couldn't help herself wanting to see him. When she lifted her
face, their eyes met. What she feared the most did happen. She had the
illusion that Chris was waiting for her there. The reality stung real
badly.

The priest started the ceremony. Claire felt the fever rose within her.
She couldn't focus herself. She wanted to run away. Her hands were wet
cold and shaking. It felt like a million years to wait for the priest
ending his every sentence.

The priest was humming his word into the air in a manner of incantation.
‘Would you, Shari Elizabeth Perchant, take this man....'

‘It will be over soon. It will be over soon, and I could go on with my
life' her own voice floated inside her head. Claire looked up nervously
toward Chris.

‘Would you, Christopher Geoffrey Warren, take this woman, Shari
Elizabeth Perchant as your wife...'

Her mental broke down, beyond her own control, Claire screamed loud
‘No!'

When she realized what she just did, every pair of eyes in the chapel
was looking at her. She was trembling and shaking with the sobs she
tried to hold back. She saw her mother's gapping expression, and her
father with the disappointment look on his face. And Chris. Looking
surprised.

‘Claire, what the fuck you think you're doing? You ruined my wedding!'
Shari was loosing control as well, screeching with anger. She hit
Claire repeatedly with her hand bouquet. The chapel was started buzzing
with whispers from the guests.

At that second, Claire dropped the flowers, the ring box, and ran as
fast as she could to the door. Amazingly fast for a girl wearing a
dress and a pair of high heels. All that was on her mind was to get
away from all of that. She had to run. Run as fast as she could, as far
as she could.

The chapel exploded into a collective oohs and aahs, and whispered
comments over what had just happened. The priest was busy trying to
make everyone shut up so he could go on with the ceremony. Apparently
that was not the first sudden burst of objection he had.

Shari was still very upset. She was saying something rude about her
