Genetic Testing (standard:Editorials, 1425 words)

I saw a story on T.V. this morning that bugged me. I wrote an essay on the topic and on others which links the subjects together. I hope you read it and let me know how you feel.

I believe it should be used as birth control? Well, of course not. Do I 
believe it should be used when the mother's life is at stake? Depends 
on what the alternatives are. Things can be done without taking extreme 
measures. 

My aunt, whom I've talked about which had Throat Cancer, was pregnant
with her youngest child when the doctors found Cervical Cancer. They 
froze the cancer and she was able to have Stephanie without any further 
complications. Stephanie is now a grown woman with a child of her own. 
The decision my aunt made could have ended her life, and the baby's 
life. But, she choose to risk it, instead of getting “rid” of 
Stephanie. My son loves her for that decision. He's ga-ga over 
Stephanie. 

A woman walks into the Emergency Room bleeding from “down there.” The
doctors can't tell if she's having a miscarriage, or if something else 
is wrong with her. They decide to abort the fetus and do an exploratory 
surgery to find out what is wrong with her. Upon opening her up they 
find there was no reason to have aborted the fetus, it was a tear in 
the uterus walls instead. Where they wrong to have done it? No, because 
it only takes a short time for someone to bleed to death. They saved 
the woman's life by doing the abortion and surgery. 

I'm getting away from the subject of this essay. Genetic testing has
proven to be worth while. I will agree with this. But I don't agree 
with the tossing aside unused fetuses who have a right to life. Those 
parents chose to undergo this treatment. They should be MAN and WOMAN 
enough to have a fall-back plan to use. They shouldn't try for 
something so trivial as having a boy child over a girl child or vice 
versa. To me, someone who thought about doing this at one time, this 
isn't only stupid. But is also morally WRONG! You can't take the 
blessing out of God's hands. You can't put yourself in God's shoes. 
When you do, you're just asking for trouble. 

The Bible is full of stories about people going against God's will. I'm
only going to name a few, so don't cringe. Moses took the credit, which 
really belonged to God, when he struck the rock and made water appear. 
What happened to him? He wasn't allowed into the Promise Land. Saul 
started believing in a sooth-sayer words instead God's. What happened 
to him? God's word was still fulfilled and he killed himself over his 
mistake. Jonah was told to go one way, by God, and choose to go his own 
way. What happened to him? He was swallowed by a whale. Okay, I admit 
the last one is funny when you think about it alone, but the moral of 
the story is you have to have faith in what Jesus has said from the 
beginning of time. LIFE is precious and should be considered as such. 

We are all taught right from wrong as children. Our parents took pride
in teaching us moral standards and behavior. To throw it all away to 
decide the sex of a child? Come on people! Let's cure cancer, diabetes, 
and those kind of things. We don't need to feel powerful over what sex 
our children are. Because in the end, it's still GOD'S choice for that 
child to be born!
