Since I was a small child I've always heard the eyes were the windows to someone's soul. This is a spin on that. I look through their eyes to see myself. And I ask a question at the end for everyone.

Windows to the Soul

The first saw a child and wanted to teach a lesson. The lesson was
supposed to be one of love and maturity, only one of them was to young
to learn. He stole the innocence of childhood and made her into a woman
before her time. He saw the woman she could become and wanted to crush
her.

The second saw a woman and wanted to destroy her with a painful hammer.
Again the lesson was about love and fairy tales, only, this time, both
were to young to know what life was all about. He stole a heart and
left her bruised and shattered. He saw the mother of his children.

The third, Aw a saving grace. He wanted to protect her from her past and
give a future of security. Both were too abused by demons from the past
to understand love isn't always red and rosy. But they built something
special which everyone craves, and she don't want. He sees his wife,
lover, best friend, and the savior he wanted to be.

The fourth was supposed to be a knight in shining armor. He promised the
moon, the stars, and a glorious life with him and all the barn animals
she wanted. Was she ever stupid enough for this one to pull the wool
over her eyes? He saw a woman who was on the brink of destruction and
provided the for her weapon to use.

The fifth, and the last one for the sake of her sanity. He didn't
promise anything, only wanted a friend. What he got was a lover who
came with a long line of unclaimed baggage. He wasn't ready for, or
willing to receive, the love she gave and was terrified by it. He saw a
woman who was sure of herself and was scared of the world.

What do all these men have in common? Me. At one point in time, they all
said they loved me. One loved me with his body to my childish heart.
One loved me as a high school sweetheart with big plans for the future.
One really didn't love me but wanted to pass his time with anyone who
would give him all of hers. One loved me unjustly and without having it
returned. One loved me I think but was scared of the emotions in
himself.

Who loved me the most? The love who still loves me and I've pledged my
life to. I carry his last name. One day I will be buried by his side.
He's given me everything I could ask for and more. It may not be
perfect, and it may not be paradise, but it's mine to have.

I can see myself through all of their eyes. But why is it you can't see
yourself through mine?
