‘Emily. She saw you.'

‘Well, you know what?'

‘What?'

‘She is a liar.'

‘I believe you, Amy. Wait till I see her. I'll soon have something to
say to her.'

And he did when he saw her next day in town.'

‘Hey, you, come here,' he said to Emily when he saw her at the bus stop.

‘So what can I do for you?'

‘You are a liar. Amy wasn't holding hands with anyone when she was on
her way home the other evening.'

‘Go and ask Simon if you don't believe me. He was the one she was
holding hands with.'

‘Not that geek who I have to share a games class with?'

‘The very same.'

A day later, Danny got hold of Simon during the games lesson at school.
He asked him if he was holding hands with Amy as they were walking home
the other evening. Simon just happened to fancy Amy like mad, so he
admitted it. Danny was heartbroken as he walked away after he had let
go of Simon.

On the way home from school, Danny ran into Emily.

‘Sorry for doubting you, Emily.' he said to her. ‘Simon has admitted
holding Carrie's hand the other evening on the way home from school,'
he said to her.

‘It's OK. Don't worry. Anyway, I know a way you can make it up to me.'

‘How?'

‘By taking me to the cinema tomorrow evening.'

‘'Yeah, OK. Shall I meet you there or shall I call for you?'

‘Call for me, of course. We live in the same street, remember?' she
said, laughing at what he had just said.

‘Next day at school. Emily couldn't wait to rub Amy up the wrong way.
She couldn't wait till she saw her later at breaktime.

‘Guess where I'm going tomorrow night?' she said to her after seeing her
hanging around the bike sheds talking to another pupil.

‘You can go to hell as far as I'm concerned,' Amy answered.

‘I'm going to the cinema with your ex-boyfriend.'

When Amy heard what Emily had just said, she felt like scratching her
eyes out but she thought it wasn't worth the effort, so she just walked
away.

Later Amy bumped into Simon in the corridor. Here was his big chance to
ask her out since realizing things weren't going well between her and
Danny.

He went up to her looking so casual. He was beginning to think he was
the Fonz. He even turned the collar up on his jacket, making two girls,
who just happened to be walking past, burst into laughter.

‘Oh, Amy, can I have a word?'

‘Of course, you can, Simon. You can have several if you want.'

‘Are you busy tonight?'

Amy knew what was coming next. Then she began to realize that he was
probably the person who was supposed to be holding her hand on the way
home from school the other evening.

‘Yes, I am, but I'm not busy tomorrow night. What do you have in mind?'

Simon couldn't believe his luck. He thought it was some kind of joke and
that the ground would swallow him up at any second soon.

They agreed to go to the cinema the next evening - Amy's suggestion. She
was going to get even after what she had been saying to Danny, about
her holding hands with another boy on the way home from school.

The next evening came and Danny went to call Emily at her house. Then
they made their way into town, but when they got to the cinema they
found Amy waiting outside.

‘What are you doing here?' Emily asked her.

‘Waiting for my date if you must know.'

Then Simon turned up. So there they stood: Amy, Emily, Danny and Simon.

‘So, Simon. Tell Danny the truth - that you weren't walking home with me
holding my hand the other evening.' Amy said after turning towards him

Simon looked at Danny, then said to him:

‘I lied. I'm sorry.'

Then Danny looked at Emily and said:

‘If you think I'm going inside there with you, you have another thing
coming.'

Amy stood there not knowing what to do next, so she walked inside the
cinema and Danny followed. Emily walked away while Simon headed to the
bus stop. When Emily saw him standing at the stop, she went over.

‘Come on,' she said to him. Let's go to the other part of the multiplex
and see what is showing.'

‘Get lost, Emily,' he replied. ‘I wouldn't go anywhere with you, even if
you were the last girl on Earth.'

Emily walked off with tears streaming down her face. But at the end of
the day, there was only one person she could blame - herself!
