Suddenly her mind took over. She jerked away, stumbled, regained her
footing. She began to run. He caught up with her easily and ran
alongside her. “Where are you running to, Lady Sarah? I’m sure
Captain Bellington will not be pleased to hear of you dallying in the
orchard with a pirate...”

Weary, she stopped running. Standing as still as she could whilst she
tried to catch her breath, Lady Sarah looked closely at the man who had
rescued her this afternoon. His breathing was no more laboured that it
had been when he was kissing her. He was not dressed for the weather,
but he didn’t seem cold. Some of his golden hair had escaped his
ribbon, and hung in a light curl over his ear. He had changed his blue
sash for one made of dark green silk, and he wore a long leather coat
that smelled faintly of horses. He was smiling at her, the sort of
smile one customarily saw on cats who had their eye on mice.

Her breasts rose and fell as she breathed heavily, her heart still
racing. She looked around desperately, but of course there was no one
around. There was a bench, though, and she walked over to it and sat
down. The marble was ice cold even through all the material of her
skirts, and she almost stood up again, but he was there, standing over
her with a smile on his face and his hand on her shoulder, pressing her
down.

“Where are you going so quickly, Lady Sarah?”

“I am going home!”

“Home to what, milady? Home to your father, for him to punish you?
Home to your mother and the servants, for them to laugh at you? Home
to what, Lady Sarah?”

“How do you know anything about me! You haven’t any idea!”

“Home to a lover, Lady Sarah? Home to your husband?”

She could not control the look of pain that crossed her face. He saw it
but for some reason that he did not understand, he did not comment on
it. Instead he released his pressure on her shoulder and took her
elbow to help her up. “Are you married, Lady Sarah?”

“No. But you must already have known this.”

“Yes. Do you have many lovers?”

“What kind of question is that to ask a lady! You should be ashamed of
yourself. You are far too bold for your own good, pirate.”

“You have none.”

She stared at him. Although her instincts told her to slap his face, to
flounce away, she did not. She turned on her heel and walked away.
She stared off into the orchard.

“Lady Sarah.” His voice, though not loud, commanded her to obey him.
She fought the urge to turn round. “Lady Sarah, look at me.”

She ignored him, looking at the skeleton of the orchard as it glowed in
the moonlight.

“Lady Sarah.” Her body stirred at the sound of his voice in her ear.
He was directly behind her now, his mouth just inches from her ear.
She felt his body against her back, so warm compared to the chill that
gripped her.

She closed her eyes and leaned back just the smallest bit, to share in
his warmth. Small wetness struck her cheek and she opened her eyes to
see snow falling gently from the sky above.

He was struck by her beauty as she turned to him, her nose red from the
cold, her eyes brimming with tears. Her dark hair flowed over her
shoulders, and as she turned a lock fell over her face. He reached out
his hand, and oh-so-gently tucked the lock of hair behind her ear.

Her voice was small and low as she asked him, “What do you want from
me?”

He watched a few snowflakes drift down, only to melt on her pale cheeks.
“My name is Sloan Alexander,” he said.

She blinked. “The Sloan Alexander? The pirate who is my father’s sworn
enemy?”

“One and the same, Lady Sarah.”

“It’s really Sir Sloan Alexander, isn’t it? I seem to recall my father
calling you a rogue. What are you doing here?”

“I have... business here.”

“Well I shouldn’t stay too long if I were you. My father shall behead
you on sight.”

“I am sure he will try, Lady Sarah, though I am not certain that he will
succeed.”

She looked at him for a long moment and then spun on her heel. As she
walked towards the terrace she called over her shoulder, “Good-bye, Sir
Alexander. I thank you again for your assistance at the docks, and I
assure you that my father has never failed at anything.”

Though she did not see him move he was suddenly in front of her,
blocking her way and holding her by the arms. He pulled her close to
him and kissed her furiously, punishing her with him mouth. But she
melted against him, her mouth pliant and soft, and within seconds his
hands moved to cradle her head, and her arms wound round his neck.

She marveled at the sensations he was creating in her just with his
mouth on hers. Her legs were to weak to hold her up and she clung
tightly to him. She wanted to run away. But more than anything she
wanted him to hold her tighter, to hold her so tightly and never let
go.

She heard the voice as though it came from miles away, a voice calling
her name over and over. She pulled away from the pirate, feeling as
though she were underwater as she tried to focus. Then the voice came
again, calling her name, and it was very close now. She looked at
Sloan in panic. “Go!” she whispered urgently.

“Is it you, now, who tries to rescue me, Lady Sarah?”

“No. Get away from me! Go before they find you. You mustn’t fight my
father here. It isn’t right. Go!”

As the voice called her name again Sarah called out, “I am here.”

Sloan looked at her and smiled slowly. “You’ve interrupted my
reward-taking again, Lady Sarah. I shall find you again to continue to
collect it.” And with that he disappeared into the falling snow,
leaving Lady Sarah shivering in his wake.
