home. He grabbed her by the arm, not especially hard but just enough to
get her attention. He turned her around and they stood face to face.
Looking into her eyes he forgot every word he was about to say and only
half stuttered an incoherent phrase. Catherine had an animalistic
quality about her, especially in her eyes. She could partially close
her eyes making it seem she was concentrating on what she saw. That
was how she was looking at Xavier right at that moment. She guided his
hands to where she wanted them to go.

Catherine backed up into the kitchen guiding Xavier with her hips. She
turned around so his back was to the sink and she stood before him.
She made the first move. She swiped his hat off and tossed it over her
shoulder. She took her hands and dove into his back pockets of his
jeans and almost lifted him higher. Xavier knew exactly what to do and
was not about to resist. He let himself go completely and went with
the flow. His hands found their way to her back, held on and pulled
her closer in. The two of them began to heat up faster than the
griddle in the kitchen with each movement they made. Then, just as
quickly as it began, Catherine brought it all to a screeching halt and
slapped him again on the other cheek. She exited out of the kitchen,
picked up her things and went out the back door. Xavier ran after her
even though he was nowhere near to having the diner ready for lock up.
He ran so fast he didn’t even notice the smoke building up in the
kitchen.

As Xavier got outside Catherine was already opening the door of her car.
Just as he reached her car door she hit the gas pedal and peeled out of
the diner’s parking lot. She sped through a puddle on the pavement and
a wave of filthy water hit Xavier in the face. As he stood there and
watched her car fade out, he felt as warm as a few minutes ago. He
then turned around to see where the warmth was coming from and finally
noticed that the fire in the diner had escalated and taken over the
building. The fire had started in the kitchen and quickly worked its
way into the eating area and stock room and engulfed the entire
building. It seemed that Catherine had tossed Xavier’s hat onto the
griddle that was still on, hot as anything. The hat caught on fire and
spread to the cleaning rags on the counter.

Xavier just stood there with his gaze fixed on the diner. The flames
shot and rolled up, reaching for the stars or at least something
hanging overhead just out of its reach. The heat finally became so hot
that the large panes of glass in the windows cracked and broke sending
shards after shards of glass onto the pavement and into the air.
Xavier pulled his arms up to shield himself from the attack. After the
glass relented, he looked around the parking lot. Xavier couldn’t find
his car. There was just the anti-theft device he used on the steering
wheel laying on the ground. The final cosmic signal that suggested
nothing was going to be coming his way for a while.

Xavier sat down on the curb and didn’t even notice the fire trucks
arriving onto the scene. Three trucks in all surrounded the area of
the diner to prevent anyone coming into harms way, or the firemen’s
way. Xavier just sat on the curb the whole time staring off into space
with no one paying any attention to him. A few people noticed him
sitting there, but they assumed by the expression on his face that he
didn’t want to discuss anything.
