every once in a while to eat some of the fresh berries growing. On the
way back Corey asked me if I wanted to go out on the boat with him.
Boat I had wondered, thinking it was a large boat like some kind of
sail or race boat, I thanked him for his offer and we decided to go out
tomorrow after lunch.

The next day Corey pulled up to the dock in a little row boat, I was a
little unsure about this. I guess you could say I was a little naive,
I had never been out on a large body of water before, certainly not in
a little boat such as this. Would it hold me? I put my lifejacket on
and fastened and refastened the the buckles. Corey laughed as he
looked on. What exactly did he think was funny? Cute he was, he had a
killer smile, and gorgeous curly blonde hair. We reached the middle of
the lake, and he handed me a fishing rod.

"What do you want me to do with this?"

There it was again, that grin.

"Haven't you ever been fishing before?" he asked.

By the end of the day, Corey had taught me how to row a boat, and some
of the basics of fishing.

A month had pasted since arriving at Aunt Mary's. She was pleased that
I had met a new friend. I was pleased that I had met Corey also, I
think I was falling in love. He taught me about cottage life. We went
out almost daily. He taught me to conoe, we went tubbing on his dad's
boat. I had a new and profound understanding and appreciation for
Aunt Mary's way of life. Corey still had to put the worm of the hook
for me when we went fishing out on the lake.

Summer was quickly coming to an end. I was sorry to see it ending so
soon. I had enjoyed my time. I was worried that I wouldn't see Corey
again, he lived a few hours in the other direction from me, but he
assured me that he would be down next summer and we could keep in touch
through the mail in the meantime. My last night there, Corey picked me
up for one last trip on the lake. Tonight wasn't like any other night.
The sky was clear, and the stars were visibly. The water was calm. It
was chilly as the summer ended and Corey draped his sweater over me. I
felt that now was the time to tell Corey what I had been thinking, even
if was just puppy love.

"Corey", I said, "I love you".

He looked at me with that grin like he always did, leaned over and
kissed me.

"You know what Sarah, I love you too".

It was the best kiss I ever had, of course it was the only kiss I had
ever had. We went back in shortly after that.

The next day Aunt Mary handed me a small envelope. it was a note from
Corey, he said that he would write soon. Mom and Dad arrived later
that afternoon. Packing up the car, I was a little sad to be going. I
remembered all the great things I had done that summer, and most of all
I remembered my first love, and wondered if we would really ever see
one another again. I thanked Aunt Mary for everything and gave her a
hug. She invited me back the next summer and I assured her that I was
sure I would be back. Mom and Dad looked at eachother rather
surprisingly. I patted Misty on the head, and gave her nose a rub.
Climbing into the back seat of the car, I gave the fresh country air
one last sniff. It was different now, quieter it seemed. I had
learned a lot that summer, but still couldn't put a worm on a hook.

The drive back was as it started. Scenic, only the cottages were a
little emptier now. People were packing up to go back to the city.
The lakes were a little less calm, the wind had picked up. The
construction on the roads were almost completed in some areas, I guess
it wouldn't be long before there was more pavement then trees. Some of
which were already starting to change colours and lose there leaves.
Summer would be starting in a week. I wondered how my friends had
spent their vacation. Probably at the malls, or catching the latest
flick. I wondered how many of them learned how to steer a boat, or how
many of them had seen a wild animal for the first time. Better yet,
how many of them had fallen in love, or experienced their first kiss.

Two weeks after school had started, I thought that I had seen Corey
walking down the school hall. I tried to catch up, but whoever it was
had ducked into the bathroom, I was running late for second period
class so decided to get going. I was sitting at my desk, when in
walked this amazing looking guy. He had gorgeous curly blonde hair.
It was Corey, he looked a bit different but it was him. He saw me and
flashed me that grin. After class, we went to lunch, he said that his
father had gotten a job out here and they had moved out. He didn't
have time to write and tell me, but had planned on stopping by my house
when he got here. Corey needed a tour guide of the big city and I
offered to take him out and show him the sights. He thanked me and
leaned over and gave me another kiss. School all of a sudden, looked
like it would be interesting this year.
