settle just outside the peaceful village. No one aboard the caravan
seemed to be upset by the actions of the locals except one. The young
girl of about 13 was heartbroken that anyone would treat them in this
way. She did not seem to understand the nature of Gypsies, or the
disdain and mocking they recieved from other folk. All she knew was
that one morning she was running and playing with her friends, but in
the next few moments she was packing up and getting ready to leave the
only home she knew.

"Sil, whatever is the matter?" an older woman asked the young girl,
after noticing the downtrodden look on her face.

"Why did we have to leave? Where are we going?" Silvestri let go,
releasing all of the pain, sadness, and anger she had been holding in a
wave of tears.

"It's a long stoy, dear. Let's just say that not everyone likes us
Gypsies ," she walked over to Sliverstri and sat down beside her. "And
we're going to Merdwyn. There, people don't mind us, or so we've heard
from other Gypsies."

"But, why do people hate us? What have we ever done?" Silvestri was
sobbing uncontrorably as she spoke.

"It's because we're different. People fear what is different. We get
used to it and go on. Eventually you will too," The older woman reached
over to grab Silvestri's hand. Sil pulled away.

"No, I won't! I don't have to!" Sil stood up and wandered over to the
carriage her family had loaded, ending the conversation.

Shortly after, the caravan, packed suitably, left for its destination.
During the trip, many people tried to cheer Sil up, but no one
succeeded. She was too confused, too angry at the earlier events and
the people of Viran for doing this. She just couldn't bring herself to
understand.

Late that night, the large caravan pulled into Merdwyn. Promptly,
everyone decided to rest for the night and proceed into the village in
the morning. Silvestri, sitll upset, decided to leave the carriage and
explore the forest around the village.

Thinking about the day's events, Sil wandered between tress and bushes,
narrowly avioding falling into the underbrush. She was so deep in
thought that she didn't notice the clearing in front of her. She
definately didn't notice her company,

Up ahead, a small ring of clear ground rose suddenly from the fallen
leaves and grasses of the forest floor. There, a young boy, also 13,
sat, apparently thinking. Actually, he ws lost in concentration, but
Silvestri didn't know that. in fact, she didn't notice the boy. The boy
noticed her.

"Who are you? I've never seen you around here before," He asked,
politely, making Silvestri jump. Seeing him for the first time, her
fear flooded her face. She began to turn and run, but before she could
run away, she felt a hand upon her shoulder.

"What's wrong? Are you okay?" His voice showed sincere concern for her.
Surprised, Sil turned around to face him. She tried to speak, but
instead exploded into tears. He stared at her for a moment, then,
instinctively, he hugged her, bringing her head to his shoulder.

They sat there in that position for what seemed like hours. Finally,
realizing what had happened, Silvestri forced herself out of the boy's
grip. Still shaken, she forced herself to speak. "Thank you."

"You're welcome," he responded, obviously shocked at the strength of
this girl. "Now, would you do me the favor of telling me your name? I'm
Annonak," He reached out his hand for a handshake. Silvestri hesitated
for a moment, suspicion crossing her face, then reached out and took
the offer.

"I'm Silvestri. You haven't seen me before because I just got here. You
see..." And with that, she began telling him her story...
