was continuing and hope had quickly escaped her body. "Jade, you're
ready to go home", the nurse spoke while hastily sticking needles here
and there and shoving pills down Jade's throat.

Blankly looking into space as the nurse man-handled her feeble body,
Jade couldn't help but think. She wondered where her home was and if
she was ever going to find it. In the past week her life had fallen
apart. The laughter that filled her soul, the happiness that shown
through her eyes, had suddenly disappeared without leaving a trace of
where it had gone. Every breath she took was once for love, hope and
faith. That was a time when she believed in life. It seemed that
reality was now suffocating her and there was nowhere and no one she
could turn to for fresh air. She couldn't help but ask herself why it
had to be her and why she was being punished for being an optimistic.

As soon as the drugs were settling into Jade's system and taking her
into a 'happy place', the nurse instructed her to change her clothes
and that she could finally go home. The nurse and her mom helped her
from the bed and left the room as soon as they saw that Jade was
stable. As she was getting her things together, she felt her purse
vibrate. At first the thought of a moving purse terrified Jade, but
then she abruptly remembered that it was her cell phone. She reached
into her pocket and pulled out the jiggling phone. She looked to see
who was calling and saw that it was Steve. She hesitated for a moment
to answer the telephone. Then realized who was calling and who she
still loved. She decided to answer the phone.

"Hello?" she answered in a dazed voice. Steve replied with a simple
'hey'. "How did everything go?" he asked, almost sounding concerned. "I
woke up from the surgery crying for my baby," Jade answered in hopes
for a sympathetic response from the love of her life. "Oh, how sad",
was what the boy who once would die for Jade's love, would say. "Well,
I just wanted to see how everything went. I'll talk to you in a few
days to see how you're doing." There was a long pause, "you there,
Jade?" Steve asked. Jade wanted to ask him the same thing, but with
different meaning. "Yes, I'm here. Okay. Um, I'm sure I'll be fine and,
yeah, I'll talk to you in a few days." There was another pause as tears
began to fall from Jade's eyes. This time her sobs were silent, for she
would not let Steve know he had broken her heart. "Alright, well I'll
talk to you later then. Bye", Steve said, not knowing what his
insincerity was doing to the girl he once cared for.

Before he could hang up, Jade spoke up. "Steve?" He answered her with an
irritated voice and told her that it was time for him to go. "I know.
Can you just do one thing for me?" "What's that?" he asked. "Tell me
you love me. Please? Even if you don't anymore. Just lie. Please? It'll
make me feel better." She couldn't believe that she was presenting her
vulnerabilities to him so openly. But, at this point in the day- and
her life, there was one thing she wasn't confused about, and that was
her feelings towards him. Steve answered quickly; "Don't do this, Jade,
not today or ever again". Her tears began to flow heavily and her
cries grew a little louder, as she heard him hang up the phone.

She sat at the edge of the bed. Her eyes were closed and her thoughts
were at a halt. The only thing racing in her head was the sound of
Steve's voice as he said "....not ever again." The thought of moving on
without him devastated her and she felt as if she had nothing else to
live for. Staring blankly at the wall in front of her, she had an
abrupt flashback that caused the tears to stop rolling down her already
stained face. She blinked rapidly and lifted her tired body from the
bed. She continued to dress and as she put on her gray draw string
pajama pants, a small smile came upon her face.

She walked over to the window, tugging the shirt of Steve's she planned
to cuddle in on the way home, over her head. She peered out the small
window that seemed to give the hospital room life. She saw the bustle
of common day life as people of all races, sizes and ages crowded the
incredibly busy Los Angeles street. She looked up to the sky, to the
sun and the clouds, and for an instant it seemed as if the Sun was only
shining on her. Squinting her eyes, she embraced the warmth and ease of
the sun beams that gave life to every living thing on Earth. For a
moment, she felt as if it was giving her all the life it had to give.
And without shying away, she excepted it, letting the warmth flood her
soul and begin to birth a new hope that had once lived deep in her
spirit.

She continued to smile as she walked away from that window and started
to gather her things. She turned back around to the small window that
the sun shone through, letting life into the hospital and into Jade's
heart. She whispered "thank you". She wouldn't ever be able to describe
that sudden wave of enthusiasm, but she knew she'd never let it leave
again. And that was enough inspiration for her to begin the long
journey of recovery.
