you serve to your silly underage friends.” 

“All you had to do was say yes.” 

“I didn't think it would have the same impact.” He looked down at the
paper with distant blue eyes. 

“It would've gotten the message across.” 

With a lump in her throat, Carly watched Mitchell avert his eyes in a
quick shot towards the feminine furnishings of the attached living 
room. He rubbed his soft, short dark hair, which was gaining slight 
streaks of gray with is maturing age. Still, Mitchell was only 
twenty-eight. Carly didn't see such a big difference in nine years. 

“You know, you aren't so advanced, Mitch, at least not so much as you
seem to think. If you were, you'd know how much you could hurt me.” 

“Well, I guess I'm supposed to apologize then, right?” 

“God! And you call me a child?” She slammed down her glass tumbler and
drops of liquid fell onto the slate black marble. 

Carly hopped off of the stool and stood directly in Mitchell's face,
staring him square in the eyes. 

“You told me that I don't need to go to college because you're going to
take care of me. What if I wanted to go?” 

“Go ahead.” 

Mitch looked up at the ceiling. The puckered square skylight was already
letting in the bright, diffused sun. He had felt, a year ago, that if 
Carly grew up and became a real adult his interest in her would wane. 
Now he wasn't so sure. His face turned warmer and he looked back down 
at Carly's fresh tears. Her silent, crumpled face told him he was being 
selfish. 

“I mean, if that's what you want, Carly.” 

“I don't know what I want anymore.”
