now you little podunk bitch?

Jimmy moved abruptly, and the girl seemed to recoil in horror. My eyes
were still burning from the unexpected flood from inside, but they
weren't just playing tricks on me when I saw the sharp, quick flash
from where Jimmy was standing. The loud crack! was unmistakable too,
and as I tried to ask just what the fuck was going on I saw and heard
two more gunshots come from Jimmy's general direction. There was no
mistaking it this time, I took two rounds and stumbled back over the
rail. I hit the water and felt cold...

***

Shit! I ran to the rail and looked over, but he was gone. Nothing I
could do. No way off the deck, there was swamp all around the place,
and the last thing I wanted was to get stuck in that bog. I'd have to
go back through the goddamned restaurant. I stepped over the pregnant
bitch who was bleeding out in the doorway and into the juke joint,
which was completely empty. No, there they were, hiding behind the bar.
Well, at least they weren't blocking the front door or some stupid shit
like that. I fired off a round into the glass mirror behind the bar,
sending bottles and glass to the floor, but keeping the fear of God in
those hiding there. No superheroes today, please.

I ran through the front door and into the gravel parking lot, fumbling
around in my pocket. My hands were numb, and I dropped the keys as I
pulled them out, but got them in the right place to start the car. The
1972 Plymouth Road Runner had a hell of a reputation in her heyday, and
I can personally vouch for its accuracy. That night she earned every
bit of that reputation as I hit the interstate and put Texas into the
past.

Next: Who is Jimmy Reyes, where is he going, and who is blackmailing
him??? To be continued...
