Lieutenant Jimmy Tyler of the United States Armed Forces Special Operations division has just been called off the battlefield for his next assignment. A short introduction to a possible series. Tell me what you think.

It was the crackling of the bushes that woke him. He was Lieutenant
James Tyler of the 4th Special Operations division, called the "Suicide
Squad," United States Army. He pulled himself to a crouch to see what
was going on. A golden-brown mass came crashing out of the low-standing
grove. It was a deer, running away from something, evidently. A sharp
crack came from behind his position, and the deer fell with a large
hole in its side. "Shit," thought Jim as he remembered where he was: a
battlefield in Italy, watching his ass making sure the snipers didn’t
get him too. He estimated that about 3/4 of his squad was obliterated,
the mission failed.

Wait, there was no mission really. He looked over towards another body,
his friend Skip Jensen. Skip was not dead, he was sleeping like a log
and snoring quietly. Jim crawled through the ditch towards his friend,
to wake him so they could move to a better position. Halfway there, the
soil exploded about 5 inches to his right side. He lay there, hoping
the sniper thought he was dead. 5 minutes later he started again, this
time mashing his body into the dirt, trying to keep out of the sniper’s
sights. Another bullet slashed its way into the dirt, and Jim turned
over, saw a German advancing, and put 3 bloody holes in the man’s
torso. The body fell, and about 20 bullets zipped around the area,
coming from an unseen source, probably the German squad’s
machine-gunner. He seemed to be the only one still up and firing, but
nobody could be sure. Skip woke at that burst, and put his helmet on
his head.

"What’s goin’ on, Jimmy?" he asked frantically. "Who’s firin’?"

"Hold on, Skip. There’s one German machine-gunner still up for sure, I
just got one of their snipers. Let’s see if we can root ‘em out."

They began crawling towards the German position, M1’s at the ready. A
German head poked up from a hole, just to be put back down by a bullet
from Skip’s weapon. The hole was about 3 feet wide, they saw, but
didn’t take the risk of putting their heads inside to see how deep.

"I know how to find out," said Jim, pulling a hand grenade from his flak
vest. Skip nodded and gave him an evil grin. Jim pulled the pin and
tossed it inside the hole. Voices screamed and yelled in German for 4
seconds, then the whump of the grenade fragmenting and spewing metal
all around, giving the Germans inside the fox hole no chance. Skip
pulled his own, tossed it inside, the blast came again, and then all
was quiet. Jim pointed his gun inside the hole, took out a torch, and
dropped down inside. 3 Nazis lay there on benches, blood streaming from
holes in their bodies where the metal bits entered. One moved, started
picking up his gun, but was put to rest by a single .45 bullet from
Jim’s parabellum semi-auto. They crawled back out of the hole, stood
up, and heard clapping from all around. Two more squads, plus their
complete squad, all alive, applauded Jim and Skip for their journey
into the hole. The whole group moved back into the trees, where an
armored personnel carrier waited to take them somewhere. A man in a tan
officer’s uniform approached Jim.

"You are Lieutenant James Tyler of the "Suicide Squad?’"Asked the man in
a burly voice.

"Yes, sir, I am," replied Jim. "What’s going on?"

The officer smiled. "I am Captain William Birch, from the OSS. We have a
new job for you and some other men. We’ll be taking you back to our
base in England, your home for the next few weeks."

With a relieved half-smile on his face, Jim sat down next to his squad
and prepared for a long sleep on the way back.

.........................................

"Wake up, Jimmy!"

"I’m up, I’m up," answered a half-asleep Lieutenant Jimmy Tyler. "Are we
there?"

"Yeah, was a pretty bumpy landing, we were all surprised that the
landing didn’t wake you. Captain Birch is waiting for you inside, says
we’re all to report in. He said it was important," said Skip in an
excited voice. "I think we’re going out on a special operation."

"Yeah, yeah, ask him if I can take a shower and get up more beforehand."

...........................................

Clean and rested, Tyler strode confidently into the briefing room where
about five Brits and his squad were already siting, some of them still
in their battle dress from that morning’s skirmish. The man conducting
the meeting looked at him.

"Good afternoon, Lieutenant. I trust you’re ready for your new
assignment now?"

"Yes, sir, I am," replied Tyler as he sat in his uncomfortable, hard
chair. "Right, then. Well, now that you and your squad are out of
Italy, your government has asked you on a new assignment, of major
importance." "Oh, really. So where are we going now?" asked the
machine-gunner of their squad, Brian Shore.

"We’re sending you into the heart of Germany," came the cold,
unemotional, unfeeling reply.
