Can one share a lover with a memory?

there is a woman i will never meet. 

her beauty, her voice, her laughter - 

they all are lost to me. 

. 

i ache for the child who’s grown up 

without her, and for the one 

that still is with her. 

. 

i wonder sometimes if she’s angry 

because i have something 

that belongs to her. 

. 

in my dreams she tells me it’s alright, 

i can borrow what is hers 

but must give it back someday. 

. 

i know this - that his heart 

was always meant for her, 

even though he does love me. 

. 

he’ll always long to be with her, 

and she will always wait for him. 

i will give him back when the time comes. 

. 

even if it kills me.
