A poem about substance.

Jack Slade

.

“Ghosts”

I heard you say

As you staggered drunk

Down the streets of Virginia City

.

“Dust”

Pointing with pistoled hand

“All dead”

.

And you were right

In your mad brain

They're all gone --

The ones who hanged you

The ones who loved you

But the mad purpose in the blood continues --

Flowing from one age into the next --

And ghosts still pretend to have substance
