A story about Laira and Ainge, the choice she makes and the sad result.

Breathing hard Laira sat up straight in bed. The dreams were more
frequent now. More clear. She hated them and prayed each night they
would stop. It was torture dreaming of him.

7 1/2 months had passed since Ainge's death, and still she couldn't
remove his clothes from the closet. They hung there gathering dust and
memories. The blue t-shirt he wore when working out, the tux for
special occasions...all of it, a waste now. In her dreams she could
feel him there. If only the dreams were real and her life was not. He
held her and caressed her. She could still feel his warm breath on her
neck. She missed being wanted. She missed him. She wished things back
to the way they were in the beginning. Laira went through the motions
of each day, a zombie. No joy, no fun, no life. Just dreams and day
dreams.

She had been a wild child before Ainge. She had filled her days with sex
and alcohol. She'd hung out with all the wrong people. When Ainge had
walked through the door of the club one August night and smiled at her,
she knew it was all over. For him she gave up the drinking and the men.
She'd thought it would be difficult. It wasn't. What she had with Ainge
was far more intoxicating. He knew her in a way no one else had. Knew
how she'd react to his touch, and knew her heart. They'd married two
months later. Her father had actually asked if it was a shotgun
wedding. "Of course not daddy." had been her reply, but she had not
been a daddy's girl for a long time now. He saw through her batting
eyelashes and big brown puppy eyes. "Don't screw this up, he's the best
thing you'll ever get." was his fatherly advice. "Thanks Dad" she had
thought sarcastically. But, now she realised he had been right. The
wedding had been fairytale quality. A string quartet had escorted her
musically down the aisle. Crimson roses and vanilla scented candles
filled the room.

Married bliss had lasted only three months and one week. One night Ainge
had come to her, his eyes full of questions and angry tears. "How could
you?" he had cursed. "What do you mean?" she asked innocently. "I mean,
how could you do it? How could you kill our baby?" "Ainge, I don't know
what you're..." "Stop lying to me! You're always lying to me!" he
yelled. "Ok, I should have told you. I just, I was only thinking about
us." "No! You were only thinking about you! Grow up! There was a living
child inside of you and you just, just extinguished it's life. You make
me sick!" "Shut up!" she cried out, "You weren't the one who would have
to carry it. Gain weight. Give birth. Lose out on life. You weren't the
one who had the choice!" "Lose out on life?! That was life! When we got
married, we said we wanted to create a new family together. We had that
chance. It was our baby. Now it's gone." "Just because I terminated
this pregnancy doesn't mean we won't ever have a baby. Just when I'm
ready." "Maybe you can forget." he spewed "But, I never will! I will
never forgive you Laira! To me, you're a murderer, and...you killed our
marriage too!" He spun around out of the room and slammed his way out
of the house.

The last thing she had heard was his car starting and squealing down the
street. He hadn't returned that night. Laira wouldn't have worried
until the next evening. After all, Ainge had many friends considering
this was his home town. However, the police knocked on her door at 1:06
am, awaking her from a shallow sleep. She wouldn't remember how they
told her of the horrific accident scene, or how she had started yelling
and hitting them. She would only remember the silence of the house
after they had left. Even his funeral was a blur. Everyone knew that
she was a grieving widow. No one else knew the secret inside her - the
memory of their last night together. There had been hatred in his eyes.

It was September now. Their child would have been born this month. She
placed her hand on her hollowed stomach, and felt an ache. For the
first time, she understood what she was missing.
