A girl and her mother learn what a true bond really is.

“What! We're moving!” I cried as my mom told me the bad news. “Why do we
have to move? I like it here.” I guess my mom just likes to ruin my
life by making us move. I mean I love my mom. She's so cool. She's
always been cool since I haven't had a dad, which has been a while, but
why do we have to move?

I should probably tell you a little about my mom. She's not the average
mom. She's single, never been married, and an English teacher. A very
cool English teacher. She's always telling me to be a little more
creative. She says that I don't ever use my imagination. I disagree
with that. I once wrote a very creative story that I got an A on, but I
always get A's on stories because my mom helps me when I'm stuck. She
tells me that one of these days she won't help me and then since I
don't ever use my imagination, I'll get a B or even a C. Hopefully
she's just joking.

My mom had me when she was 20. My dad just left her when he found out he
was going to be a dad. Then when I was nine he decided he wanted to
meet me and “patch” things up with my mom, but my mom was fine taking
care of me alone, she didn't need my dad's help. To tell you the truth,
she didn't want my dad's help because he abandoned us before I was
born and she says that's not the way it should be. She says that if he
truly loved us, he would have stayed and taken care of us, but that's
her job now.

“I found a job at a different school. It seems like a great school, they
even said they have really nice kids, so you'll probably make friends
really fast,” my mom said as she hugged me. “Also, just so you feel a
little more comfortable, I'm going to see if I can get you into my
class.”

I know my mom was trying to be nice about moving, but I had to ask, “Do
I have to?”

My mom sat down on my bed, patted the place next to her and quietly
said, “I know you don't always like change, but change can be good.”

“A good change for me would be dropping a few pounds,” my mom replied.

My mom's not the skinniest person in the world, but she doesn't care
what people think.

“So get ready because the job starts Monday. You're going to need to get
up at 5:30 so we can be on time,” said my mom. She seemed really
excited.

“Why 5:30?” I asked. “Aren't we going to move closer?”

“You'll have to get up at 5:30 for a while, because I know it takes you
forever to get ready,” she joked, “and we will move closer, but not
now.”

“Don't I have a swim meet tomorrow? How can I swim in that if I don't go
to Blue Creek Middle anymore? That meet was really important to me, I
said sobbing. “You picked a really bad time to switch jobs. I hate
you!” I needed to get away.

“Emma! Emma wait,” pleaded my mom.

I ran downstairs and out the door. With every step I took, I was crying.
This is the first time I've ever been mad at her. We're normally best
friends, we tell each other everything. I'm wasn't sure if I could
stand being mad at her, I felt worse than losing a best friend. I felt
betrayed.

I couldn't see where I was going, I just ran. I ended up running right
into my best friend Lauren. My mom always jokes that Lauren and I are
twins because we can pretty much read each others mind, but we would
have to be her kids.

Lauren hugged me and asked, “What's wrong? Did something happen to
Marne?”

Lauren loves my mom's name she think's it's so cool. She also knows how
close my mom and I are. She was the one I ran to when I found out my
