Diary

April 19

snowed early in the morning

then the sun came out

on the hiking trail

with my dog and a blue sky

white fluffy clouds

a fifty-five pound pack

through the quivering leaves

a lake sparkles

and through an opening

purple snow-capped mountains on the horizon

my dog runs ahead

sniffing this way and that

almost unable to contain herself

so happy she runs back to lick my hand

then off she goes

an open space

on the side of a hill

that swells up to the sky

gives such a view of tall

green spring grasses swaying and

rock outcroppings

narrowing down to the horizon

through a silver stream-centered valley

I make my camp before night fall and

in the celestial night

I step away from the fire

and stare up into the sky

and far from blinding city lights spot Andromeda

some 2.5 million light years away

approaching our sun at 300 kilometers per second

3 billion years they will collide

I smoke and contemplate

A rumble of thunder

a swelling blackness covers the northern stars

I get in my tent

snug in my sleeping bag

and listen to the first rain drops

pitter pattering on the nylon shell

and I lie awake into the night

listening to the rain

cuddled with my dog
