I got this idea from a thread on the forum. As I was writing a reply I found I had emotions I couldn't suppress.

Americans

By: Lori

We as a people are so proud to call ourselves “Americans”, that we tend
to forget how we came to be. My state is a mixture of Nova Scoticans,
Germans, English, West Indians, Acadians, Africans, Irish, and Italians
just to name a few. That list doesn't include the ones who came after
these people. Most people tend to forget that our ancestors, of my
state, started out in Nova Scotia and made their way to the islands of
the Caribbean before they got here. Also, they forget the numerous
slaves that make up our family trees, no matter if we are black, white,
red, or yellow.

Without these people what would we call ourselves then. I don't want to
think about where or what our lives would be like without those brave
folks who lost lives along the journey to a better place. I don't want
to think about the one who were bound with chains, denied food and
water or the basic hygiene supplies need to survive. Or the ones who
made it but had to go it alone when they started out with a whole
family or families.

We stand on our soap boxes and preach the words we want people to
believe in. Yet, we forget the basic fundamentals this country was
start on, freedom to chose how we live and the pursuit of happiness. If
we don't let others believe in every we have been taught in school,
then how can we call ourselves proud? If we don't give these so-called
illegals the same rights we have, then what good is it to have a safe
country they can come too? Do you really want these people to lose
heart and start killing and maiming us? I'm not saying that is where
it's headed. But, think about it. If these people don't get help
they'll turn to a life where they can get the help they need, by any
means they can.

We turn people away every day in this country, and in others where they
are trying to get to us. If we keep turning these people away, where
will the help be when we need it? Everyone knows we are in the middle,
hopefully nearing the end, of a huge war. If the people we are trying
to depend got the help they really needed, then the war would be over.
We could even call ourselves the winners then. But, as long as we let
these people starve, go without housing, and medical aid, what good it
is to come from a wealthy country? They didn't ask for our help when we
started this war, but they are paying the price for our intrusion.

People say our country is too overcrowded. That may be true, but at
least we aren't like other countries who kill little babies because
they were born the wrong sex. There are so many orphans in this world.
Little boys and girls doing without a loving home to grow up in. Why
can't we open our doors to them? Maybe start an international orphanage
for these children whom their own government doesn't want.

The gay and lesbian marriage is also a disgrace. Who cares if they get
married or not? It's not our place to tell grown men and women what to
do. If these people have found love, then isn't that part of the
pursuit of happiness? I swear. I can't believe what this country has
come too. This war has been going on for years. Hasn't anyone learned
that if these people don't get their rights, which they deserve, their
just going to keep on fighting? How would you feel if the government
told your spouse they didn't have the same rights as you do? How would
you feel if the only one who knew what you really wanted to do, medical
or otherwise, was taken out of the picture and complete strangers made
decisions for you?

As American we are given so many rights, some we even take for granted.
Why can't we give someone else the same joy we feel when they play the
“Stars and Stripes?” Why can't we give someone the pleasure of taking
vows we as straight people abuse? Why can't we give some child the hope
of a better tomorrow? I don't have the answers. I don't think I will
ever be around to see the answers given. But, I pray that some day
someone will stand up for the people who can't, or they are too afraid,
to stand up for themselves.
