A story idea from a song I heard. I hope everyone likes it.

Would You Go With Me

By: Lori

I got this idea from a song. It's written by Shawn Camp and John Scott
Sherrill. The one and only Josh Turner sings it.

Jim starts the song as the door opens. He recognizes the look on the
doctor's face, and it isn't good news. He sighs deeply preparing his
heart for the words to come. He doesn't want his beloved Elizabeth to
hear the news. “Let me turn this off and we'll step outside.” He tells
the doctor.

“No,” Elizabeth, his wife of fifty years, expresses. “I want to hear the
song, so let it play. You shouldn't be long.”

“Okay, my love, whatever you want.” Jim whispers to her. “Come on.” He
tells the doctor impatiently.

Upon closing the door, Jim hears the music playing softly in his wife's
room. When it begins he gets the feeling of an old time country song.
With the sounds of a Dobro and Mandolin, he gets the poignant sounds of
two distinctive guitar sounds. Added to them are the Bass, the
Acoustic, and Electric guitars. The moving sounds of a Pianist hitting
the keys in time with the percussions.

The piece of music wouldn't be what it is without the somber bass voice
of the singer. Not only singing the lyrics, he conveys the emotions the
words become in the head of the listener. Jim listens to the first line
with feelings of gloom and ponders on what's to come from the
physician.

“Would you go with me, If we rolled down streets of fire? Would you hold
onto me tighter, As the summer sun got higher? If we rolled from town
to town, And never shut it down? Would you go with me, If we were lost
in field of clover? Would you walk even closer, until the trip was
over? And would it be ok, if I didn't know the way?””

“Mr. Laird, you can't put this off any longer. I realize you don't wish
to hear this. But, you have to face the facts here.” Dr. Thomas Burke
pleads with compassion. He's been treating Elizabeth for two years,
helping her fight against Ovarian Cancer. “The chemo isn't working. She
knows it and I know it. Hell, the aides know it when they come in to
take out her trash. The only one who won't acknowledge it is you.”

“I know.” Jim whispers with tears in his eyes. “I just don't want to
give up hope yet. Isn't there anything else you can do? I'll pay
anything, and I'll do anything.”

Thomas takes a deep breath and looks at Jim. He's never been in Jim's
shoes, but he understands exactly what he's thinking. Jim desires to be
in some other time, some other place. Anywhere but listening to Thomas
deliver the news his wife is dying. Thomas understands; he doesn't
comprehend how anyone copes with the pain of losing someone they love.
He hopes to never go through this agony. Maybe this is the reason he
never married. Tom's never loved someone enough to grapple the pain of
losing them and not want to die yourself.

“Jim, I understand it's hard to lose someone you love. But, in this
situation, Elizabeth can't be saved.” Thomas takes a breath to fill his
lungs. He knows the critical part of his speech is yet to come. If he
can get through it without breaking the man's heart, any more then he
already has, it just may be a salvageable day.

“But, you need to let her go. You must be the one to tell her it's okay
to move on. Not being able to withstand the guilt of leaving the other
one, some people linger in agony. You have to stop her from doing this.
You must tell her you'll meet her in Heaven one day, but today is her
time to move on. She needs to realize you'll be okay without her.”
There he's said it. Thomas holds his breath.

“I understand.” Jim states grief-stricken. “Really, I do. How do you say
goodbye to the person who means everything to you? Elizabeth is my
