The conclusion to Double Jeopardy find out how it ends!

13. Beginning of the End

Connor stood stock still, paralyzed with fear. How could he make such a
choice? Charlie was a dangerous man, and should never be allowed to
walk the streets again. But as he glanced down at Allie, his choice
finally became clear. Connor took a tentative step towards Allie as the
security guards surrounded Charlie. “Don't anybody move! You want to
watch your wife and daughter die, Cassidy? Is that what you really
want?” “Of course not!” “Then don't push me, Connor! I'm warning you
right now, don't push me. I gave you your two options, now what's it
going to be?” “I have no choice, Charlie. Go, nobody try and stop him.
Just let him walk out the door. I ... I can't risk Allie and Francie's
lives.” Charlie turned with the syringe in hand. Bryan and Connor
followed far behind. They wanted Charlie to be off guard, that way they
could surprise him and move in. They waited until he was in the parking
lot, Connor gave the signal and Bryan moved in. He cuffed him while
Connor read him his rights. “Charles Chattum, you're under arrest for
the attempted murders of Allison and Franchesca Cassidy. You have the
right to remain silent anything you say can and will be used against
you ...” “I know my rights, Cassidy!” “Just the same, I have to read
them to you anyway.” Connor finished and looked back at Bryan. “You got
this, Bryan? I need to be with Allison.” “I got it, Connor. He's going
downtown.” Connor took one last look at Charlie and disappeared behind
the ER doors.

When he arrived back at the NICU, Allison was being whisked away on a
gurney. He looked at Francie who was lying on her warming table. He
gently took her tiny hand and spoke to her softly. “Francie, Mommy's
going to be all right, honey. She's a fighter. I love you, sweetheart.”
He gave her a gentle kiss before going into see Allie. “Sorry, sir
you're not allowed in here.” One of the nurses said gruffly. “But I'm
her husband! Allison? What's happening to her? Why isn't she awake?”
“Sir, please leave.” “No! I'm not leaving until I get some answers,
what the hell is going on?” “Allison's very weak, she should've stayed
in bed. Pulling the IVs and struggling with Charlie made her condition
worse. We're giving her some blood right now. We're doing all we can,
Mr. Cassidy.” “How long will that take?” “About an hour. You're welcome
to sit with her, just let me do my work. I have to run the IVs and then
you can sit with her.” “Will she regain consciousness?” “I don't know,
Mr. Cassidy. She should in time.” “Why is she unconscious? I understand
her being weak, but why did she collapse?” “Allison lost a considerable
amount of blood during surgery and when she delivered your daughter.
Her weakened condition coupled with the struggle with Charlie just made
her body shut down. Her body's trying to get every available resource
to fight the current situation. She should regain consciousness soon.”
Connor was banished to the waiting room. Lynn was sitting there ringing
her hands and trying to hold back tears. “How is she?” “Well, she's
still unconscious, Lynn. They're giving her a blood transfusion right
now. I can sit with her as soon as they get everything all set up.”
“Will she regain consciousness?” “They say she will. I asked them why
she was unconscious in the first place. They said that Allie's very
weak, and in her weakened state struggling with Charlie made it worse.”
“He probably told her that he killed Francie. Nothing other than that
would make her leave that bed.” Lynn said emphatically. “That's my
thinking. I'm sure he did, he probably snuck in while she was asleep.
He thought it was his prime time to strike and then she woke up. Then
to get her upset, he told her that he had either harmed or killed
Francie, so she got out of bed and went down to the nursery.” Orson
stood in the doorway listening intently to their conversation. He
approached Connor and reached out his hand. “What do you want, Orson?
Thanks to you my wife's lying in there barely clinging to life.” “I ...
I didn't know, sir. I saw the man go passed, but I thought he was a
doctor.” “You didn't ask who he was? You just assumed? That's the
dumbest thing I've ever heard! You were hired to do a job and you
thought that reading the damn newspaper was more important!” Connor got
up and slugged Orson. He went down like a ton of bricks, he stood up
and regained his composure. “Mr. Cassidy, if there's any way I can make
It up to you ...” “Stay the hell out of my face!” Connor spat angrily.
Orson left the hospital silently exiting through the ER doors.

Half an hour later, Connor was escorted into see Allie. She was still
unconscious, two large IVs were positioned on each side of her giving
her blood. Connor took a seat beside her and gently caressed her hand.”
Allie, I love you, sweetness. Everything's going to be okay. Francie's
fine, darling. He didn't hurt her, you're a little weak. You need to
