A day in the life of a philanderer.

The Morning After

I opened my eyes. The light from the streetlight outside streamed
between the thick curtains in well defined lines in which dust motes
lazily danced. I sat up and rubbed my eyes with thumb and forefinger
of one hand. I groped gently across the nightstand for my pack of
cigarettes. I found them next to the alarm clock. My eyes were drawn
to it. The time glared at me in harsh red L.E.D. light. 4:30 in the
morning. "Always at fucking 4:30." I muttered to myself quietly.

I lit a cigarette and slowly, carefully slid my legs from beneath the
blankets so as not to wake her. I sat on the edge of the bed with my
head in my hands watching the smoke drift around through the light. It
seemed to disappear once it hit the shadows. I wanted to disappear. I
stood silently and searched around for my clothes, finding them strewn
about the room as though tossed about in a panic. Nearly the truth.

I puffed on my cigarette as I pulled on my pants, enjoying the
near-painful burn as the smoke entered my lungs. I blew the smoke
across the room into the light, where a haze was beginning to form.
This room didn't have a coffee maker in it. More's the pity. I smoked
and watched her sleep.

She was beautiful. Tall, slender, long dark brown hair and green eyes.
She was athletic; hard where she needed it, but soft in all the right
places. We had a hell of a time. This would end the way it always did
though. I would dig through my wallet and pull out a business card
with my number on it and leave it on the pillow. She would wake up and
I would be gone and she wouldn't call.

I always wondered, right about the time I was pulling on my shoes and
lighting another cigarette to head out the door; what if I had stayed?
If she had awoken to see my face in the morning, would the reaction in
those beautiful green eyes have been any different than when she opened
them to find a cold bed and a card on the pillow?

No sense thinking about it now. I pulled my shoes on and stood up. I
lit another cigarette. I dropped the card on the pillow gently. I
hesitated. Her hair smelled so good. I leaned in and kissed her neck
softly. She murmured and smiled and stayed asleep. I walked out and
locked the door behind me. My door key was on the dresser. I guess I
will never know what could have happened if I had stayed. I never
stay. Fucking 4:30 in the morning.
