3 orphans are left to deal with thier parents deaths and the earth which has seen better days.

I grabbed her wrist before the knife made contact with her skin. She
cried out, and then broke into tears and put her head against my chest.

“I miss them too. But it won't do any good if you're dead. Think about
Megan,” I said trying to soothe Natalie. She hugged me, and cried into
my shoulder.

“It's m-my fault,” Natalie said. “I should have listened to Mom. The
last thing I told her was I hate you.” She started to slump down
again, but I held her up.

That was when the screeching started. I let her sit, and grabbed the
knife. A black creature, I call them Devil Dogs, poked its head over
the shack.

Its partner bounded around behind me. Then the first jumped over the
roof, and came to a stop in front of me. It lunged up at my neck.

I grabbed its fur, and jabbed its back with the knife. Blue blood was
dripping from the knife. The beast's eyes went from yellow to black.

I had forgotten about the other one to late. Before its teeth met my
leg, a red arrow pierced its side. I turned to see Megan lower her bow.

“Miss me?” she asked jogging up to me.

“If you wouldn't have killed that mutt, I would kill you,” I said.

“What a warm welcome,” she said sarcastically. She turned, and her eyes
rested on Natalie. “Are you OK?”

Natalie turned away crying. “They're in a better place,” Megan said.

“We have to get back,” I said helping Natalie regain her composure.
