Two people grow apart.

~A Pale, Empty Sky~

A flock of crows is blown before the wind like tattered pennons against
a pale, empty sky. And it was all arranged, long ago, when the leaf
fell from Adam’s thighs.

Had I not stopped on the corner that day and had not the light caught
your chin that certain way I would never have known you.

How much is left to chance, or destiny, we may never know. But it is
certain there is no freedom either way. Your heart breaks, and so does
mine. Could it be otherwise?

You hold your coffee cup in that same, certain style, and I shuffle my
paper and hum, and we pretend it has not gone awry. Cain slew Abel for
want of love. And, poor soul, we gave it away. Drifted apart like two
leaves in a stream.
