"Doctor, there are more than a dozen of the enemy congregated at the
Captain's location. The odds of our three phasers overpowering their
dozen plus disruptors is astronomical, not to mention that we do not
employ the element of surprise. If we are to rescue the Captain, we
will have to wait until a more logical opportunity presents itself to
us." Spock still did not release McCoy's arm.

"What says they won't kill him before your 'logical opportunity'
presents itself, Spock?" McCoy was enraged, but didn't fight the
Vulcan's grip.

"Because their disruptors were set to stun, Doctor. Were they looking to
kill us, the Captain would already be dead."

"Do you even give a damn that Jim is back there, surrounded by God knows
what?" McCoy asked in disgust.

"Of course, Doctor," Spock began, but was not surprised in the least
when he was again cut off.

"You green blooded, inhuman, logic spitting viper..." He cursed, then
turned away and headed toward the mining camp.

Ensign Davis fell in behind McCoy, with Spock bringing up the rear. As
they walked the final steps to Nexus Iota, Spock again checked his
tricorder to satisfy himself that their pursuers were no longer
following closely behind. McCoy was the first to break the jungle
treeline into the clearing where the settlement was located, and bolted
upright before falling on his rear as he did so.

"Force field," Spock concluded emotionlessly from behind.

"How'd you guess?" McCoy answered sarcastically.

"This field is being controlled by a central power generator within the
camp. Fascinating." Spock recorded the information into his tricorder.

"So how do we get inside?" Ensign Davis asked, turning to the more
experienced officers.

"Well, they knew we were coming..." McCoy grumbled as he stood up and
brushed the soil from his blue uniform top.

"Indeed, Doctor, and they have come to allow us safe passage, as per
their word." Spock pointed through the invisible shield at a small
procession of aliens similar to the one Kirk had spoken to on the
bridge of the ship. The beings approached and analyzed their visitors
for a few seconds, then waved them inside.

Jim Kirk awoke with a horrible headache, leaving him dizzy and
disoriented. He sat up slowly in his bed, trying to figure out what he
was doing and where he was. No, he wasn't in his bed, he was lying on
a...slab of rock? Indeed, he shuffled his weight off an aching hip and
realized that he was lying on a heavy slab of roughly chiseled rock. He
managed to sit up, throwing his legs over the edge of the thing, and
rubbed his acing temples. His shoulder and back pulsed with a stinging
pain, and his neck was stiff. He began to remember running through the
jungle, falling, seeing nothing but the crimson red sky of Gamma Hydra
V, then disruptor blasts fell onto him like a poisonous rain.

He blinked the blurriness out of his eyes, and then looked around at the
small room he was in. Three rock walls fell into sight around him, and
the roof was also made of rock. He stepped onto the floor, also rock,
and realized the intense pain shooting through his body begging him to
lie down again. He refused, and walked forward to the mouth of the
small cave he was in, only to find that the opening was sealed with an
invisible force field. Beyond it were corridors of rock leading away
from him, out of sight to his left and right. A red hue was cast in the
hall and his cell by torches that were nailed to the outside corridor
every ten feet or so.

"Well, if I've died I've certainly missed heaven." Kirk sighed, and then
struck at the force field again to satisfy himself that it would not
give.

"Be careful with your strength, human. If you wish to recover from your
capture, you'll need it. And you haven't died, but you're right about
one thing. This is not heaven." A snarl and a chuckle followed the
hidden voice's statement, then the cavern once again slowly died into
silence.

"Who's there?" Kirk demanded. No reply.

"Who's there, I said. This is Captain James Kirk of the U.S.S.
Enterprise, United Federation of Planets. Speak again if you're not too
afraid..." Kirk dared.

"We fear no humans, especially not Federation humans. Your inferior
intellect and physical stamina merely provide us with entertainment."
Another sinister chuckle followed.

"Then, if you've no fear, show yourself!" Kirk shouted.

He stepped back and waited, listening to the silence and breathing
heavily in the stale air. He knew he must be underground, but where?
Suddenly, just in front of him, beyond the shielded entrance to his
cave cell, two small, bright red lights appeared just inches apart.
Kirk stared at the lights for a few seconds, and then slowly realized
that they were not lights, but eyes. The longer he stared, the more in
focus the being came. Kirk's mouth gaped slightly as the creature moved
toward him, suddenly becoming all too visible. It was huge, at least
eight feet tall and as broad as an Albazian strongman. It moved slowly
forward, bringing itself into the light of a nearby torch.

"Who are you?" Kirk asked.

"Your keeper." Was the cackled answer. It moved closer and removed a
hood, revealing a large, black head shaped much like an earth
crocodile, or a Gorn, Kirk thought unpleasantly. It arrived at Kirk's
shielded cell door and growled at him, then replaced its hood and moved
back into the shadows. Once there, its stillness made it all but vanish
to Kirk's eyes, and if not for the fact that it had just introduced
itself, he would never have believed in its presence.

"What is to be done with me?" Kirk asked, though he hated to do it. He
was almost glad there was no response, and didn't press for one.
