"Fern is a really pretty name," Brett smiled.

"Thank you," Fern had to smile again.

"So you coming back here, tomorrow?" Brett wanted to know.

"I don't think so, I have never seen the ocean during the night and I
wonder what it would look like," Fern explained.

"It is a beautiful sight and is much better then an arcade full of
stupid tourists," Brett replied.

"I'll vouch for that," Fern laughed.

"Then perhaps I will see you at the beach, tomorrow night," Brett
suggested.

"Perhaps," Fern said.

"You know the time has flown, the sun rises in one hour," Brett showed
her his watch.

"I'd better go in case my mom wakes up and sees I'm not on the porch,"
Fern started to leave.

"Definitely at the beach tomorrow?" Brett wondered aloud.

"I'll probably be there," Fern waved.

"One more thing, why would your mom expect you to be on the porch?"
Brett asked.

"I can't sleep at night so I sit outside and during the day I sleep,"
Fern explained.

"Cool," Brett nodded his head.

"I really have to go, bye," she waved again then started to rollerblade
home.

"Bye," Brett yelled after her. Fern rollerbladed home and once there
she hid her rollerblades again. She was sitting calm, watching the
sunrise when her mom walked out.

"I thought you would be in bed," her mom said.

"We go through this every day. I go to bed after the sunrise. I never
miss a sunrise or sunset," Fern replied. She watched the sunrise then
went to her room. She slipped into a big T-shirt and jumped into her
bed. Sleep gripped her and she began to run towards dreamland.

When she awoke, the sun was beginning to set. She rose slowly and
stretched her long legs. She grabbed her brush and began to comb her
dark red curls.

"Knock, knock, may I come in?" her mom asked.

"Yeah, go ahead," Fern replied.

"Look, I hate to admit it but your father and I have to catch a plane
going to Gilbert in Arizona. My mother lives there and she is very
ill. Now, we thought of taking you but I believe you are old enough to
be alone. We were leaving in a week but my mom has taken a turn for the
worse so we are leaving tonight. Now, please don't wander around at
night," her mother said.

"Thank you for trusting me and you ought to trust me with the night
thing. I will not wander around. I love you so do not disappear,
okay?" Fern lied to her mother about not wandering around.

"Okay, and I love you too. Well, we have to be off so when you are
dressed, come say good-bye," her mother hugged her then left the room.
Fern smiled then dressed in her swimsuit, and she then slipped a summer
dress over it. She walked out of her room and into the living room.
Her father and mother were waiting.

"Bye mom. Bye dad. Don't stay too long," Fern hugged both of her
parents. They then walked out the door and got in their corvette.

"Take care and not too big of parties," her father yelled as they
started the car. They waved out the windows and then they were gone.
Fern cheered and then grabbed a towel and her rollerblades. She
rollerbladed to the beach and saw no sign of Brett. She stripped off
her dress and rollerblades. For a moment, she hesitated before jumping
into the water. The sunset made the water look like blood, but Fern
knew it was an illusion so she ran into the water. She splashed around
as if she was a little kid again, and laughed, and giggled. She dove
under the water and came up sputtering. She laughed again and dove
back under.

When she came up, she saw Brett standing beside her stuff. He was
dressed the same way as yesterday and he waved to her. She waved back
and then came out of the water. She then realized that the moon had
came up and she looked at the water in awe. Each wave was bathed in
iridescent, silver light.

"Wow," Fern breathed.

"I think you like the water at night," Brett smiled.

"I do, I love it," Fern gasped.

"I have a friend that I want you to meet," Brett gestured to a boy
standing behind him. The boy was dressed in all black and had a black
leather jacket. He had dark brown hair and soulful brown eyes.

"This is Dominic and this pretty woman is Fern," Brett grinned at Fern.

"Hi," Fern offered her hand. Dominic gripped her hand with a hand that
was covered by a black leather glove.

"Hello," his voice was husky and soulful sounding like his eyes looked.

"So did you have fun in the water?" Brett inquired.

"Yes, I loved it in the water. It was a blast," Fern laughed.

"Would you like to take a walk with us?" Brett wondered.

"I don't have shoes," Fern admitted.

"We'll walk in the sand. Want me to carry your things?" Brett offered.

"I'm okay, really," Fern felt bad for letting him do that.

"Let me. Trust me, I am strong enough to carry all of it," Brett
chuckled.

"I guess," Fern grudgingly agreed. Brett swooped down and grabbed all
of her things as if they weighed nothing. They began to walk down the
beach.

"So how are your parents?" Brett questioned.

"They are on their way to my grandma in Gilbert," Fern replied.

"So, you won't have to take off an hour before sunrise, will you?" Brett
wondered.

"No, I won't," Fern laughed.

"Too bad, we have to," Dominic suddenly piped up.

"Why?" Fern wanted to know.

"We sleep during the day too and well that is our dinner time," Brett
explained.

"Oh, me too," Fern smiled.

"That is the way it is for all night dwellers," Dominic exclaimed.

"Your parents are going to leave you alone for a night?" Brett asked.

"No, probably more like a couple weeks," Fern felt guilty all of a
sudden for being on the beach.

"Poor Fern, and you are not afraid of becoming a missing person?" Brett
inquired.

"I have no reason to be," Fern laughed.

"And why is this?" Dominic had to know.

"I am with you two, big, strong men," Fern giggled.

"Hmm," was Dominic's response.

"We are approaching our hang out," Brett suddenly said.

"Where? All I see is a solid wall of rock," Fern stared hard at the
wall, trying to find some sign of an opening.

"No, you are looking in the wrong spot. We have to wade around the
rocks that are in the water. Then you will see it, actually we'll have
to point it out," Brett gestured towards the rocks that seemed to be
floating in the water. They began to walk though the water and Fern
almost fell. Brett grabbed her arm and helped her keep her balance.
Fern saw that he was able to hold everything in one hand. There was a
little sandy area behind the rock wall and then there was a big rock
pile.

"Where is this hangout?" Fern still did not see the entrance.

"Follow us," Dominic walked around the pile of rocks and disappeared.
Brett offered his hand and Fern took it gratefully. He walked around
the pile and then Fern saw the hole in the wall of rock. It was just
big enough for a person to fit through. Brett looked at her and
smiled, then ducked through the hole, and Fern came in after him.
Suddenly a large Pitbull came barking up and trying to bite Fern.

"Hush Killer, this is Fern. She is with us," Brett calmed the ferocious
dog. Killer sniffed Fern and then let her by. Killer barked and
further in the cave, three other barks responded.

"Well, you seem to have organized pets here," Fern observed.

"Yes, they are the guards that keep unwanted visitors out," Brett
explained.

"Makes sense," Fern agreed. Then she saw beads put together so thick
that she could not see through them over an entrance. Brett pushed
through them and Fern flinched as she moved through them.

"Cordilia, I thought you had a party to attend?" Brett suddenly said.
Fern saw a beautiful brunette girl sitting on a blue blowup chair. She
gazed at Fern with curious green eyes.

"The party bored me and this must be that girl you were talking about.
Wasn't her name, um, Fern?" Cordilia seemed to struggle to remember.

"Yes, this is her and yes again, her name is Fern," Brett replied. Fern
stared around her in amazement. The room was decorated to the
seventies style.

"This does not seem to match you guys at all," Fern announced.

"That is because it is where we first take our guests," Brett replied.

"Or Brett calls it the shag room," Cordilia laughed. Her voice was very
low and silky. Fern noticed that she too wore all black and had
chains. She wore a black crop top that revealed that her belly was
pierced. Also, there was a tattoo of a man but Fern was too far away
to see what he was doing.

"If I want your input, I'll ask for it," Brett rolled his eyes.

"You don't need to ask me, I'll just give," Cordilia smirked then stood
up, "I am going for a ride on the beach. Have a fun time."

"I think I will go with her," Dominic said.

"Fine, can I meet you here tomorrow night?" Brett asked.

"Actually, I think I want to go to the tattoo shop tomorrow," Fern
replied.

"That's cool. Why are you going there?" Brett wanted to know.

"You'll see. If you want to go with your friends, you had better
hurry," Fern ushered Brett towards the beads.

"Do you see that doorway? It will take you to the top of the cliff.
Take that way, bye," Brett ducked out into the hall. Fern climbed up
the stairs to the entrance. A dark tunnel met her and she placed a
hand on the wall. She began to walk slowly upward and finally emerged
into the open air. She found all her stuff lying right by the opening.

"How in the world?" Fern wondered. Then she heard the roar of motors
and she ran to the edge of the cliff. She saw three riders on
beautiful Harley Davidson motorcycles. She smiled then threw on her
dress. She pulled on her rollerblades and realized something with a
start. She was now above her house instead of below. She began to
rollerblade down hill and she shot into her driveway. She took off her
rollerblades and walked into the house. She smiled when she saw that it
was a half-hour before sunrise. Suddenly the telephone rang.

"Hello," Fern answered.

"Hey my little Fern. Just calling to say we made it. At this time, it
looks like we may be here for a couple of weeks," her mother spoke into
the telephone.

"That's a long time. Well, I am glad that you made it there safe," Fern
announced.

"Trust me darling, so am I. Well, I have to go, bye," her mother made a
kiss noise.

"Bye mom and tell dad that I love him," Fern said.

"He says the same thing back, bye," her mother hung up the telephone.
Fern now did not expect them back home for a month. When her mom
realized that they were going to be there for an amount of time it
actually doubled. Fern went outside and sat on her porch. She watched
stars shoot until the sun began to rise.

The next night, Fern wore black shorts and a black tanktop. She put her
hair into a black ponytail holder. Fern was rollerblading to the
tattoo parlor when she saw a woman posting a missing sign on a
telephone post. She recognized the boy on there as being the kid that
bumped her in the arcade.

"Excuse me, madame," Fern tapped the woman on the shoulder.

"Yes?" the woman turned to face Fern and there were tears in her eyes.

"How long has he been missing?" Fern inquired.

"Daniel vanished two nights ago. He was going to the arcade but he
never came back," the woman smiled weakly.

"I saw him at the arcade," Fern explained.

"You did?" the woman's eyes widened.

"Yes, he bumped into me while I was playing but I was too into my game
to see what happened to him," Fern shrugged her shoulders, "Perhaps,
you will find him."

"Fat chance. I am not stupid. I have seen all the other missing
posters and I figure not many of the people have been found," the woman
turned her head away.

"I still say, good luck," Fern exclaimed.

"Thank you," the woman began to walk away. Fern looked once more at the
picture of Daniel then shook her head. She continued on her way and
arrived at the tattoo parlor.

Later, she came out, with a broad smile on her face. On her shoulder
was a tattoo of a girl in black. Behind her, big words read "Night
Dweller".

"Pretty cool," Brett's voice spoke up.

"You think so?" Fern flexed her arm even thought it made her wince with
pain.

"Oh yeah, it is the hottest tattoo," Dominic suddenly was at her side.

"Most definitely," Cordilia agreed.

"Well, hello everyone," Fern laughed.

"I have another friend that I want you to meet," Brett chuckled and
gestured to another blonde boy at his right, "This is Brenton."

"Hi Brenton," Fern smiled, "I am Fern."

"I know and please call me Brent," Brenton exclaimed. He wore all black
and had chains too. His hair was obviously bleached and his eyes were
a pale green.

"Okay Brent and how do you know?" Fern wondered.

"You are all that Brett talks about lately. He says that you are so
cool because you like the night and blah, blah, blah," Brenton rolled
his eyes.

"Thanks Brenton, I needed your help like I needed. . . A bullet to the
brain," Brett laughed.

"I know that is why I said it," Brenton smiled wickedly

"So where are you going to go now?" Brett inquired.

"I don't know," Fern replied.

"Do you want to go back to our place?" Brett asked.

"Sure, I'll meet you there," Fern smiled.

"You can ride on my motorcycle with me," Brett offered.

"And where do I put my rollerblades?" Fern wondered.

"How about we drop them off at your house?" Brett questioned.

"I guess," Fern smiled.

"Then let's go," Brett whooped and started his motorcycle. He held both
rollerblades in one hand and drove with the other. They were going
very fast but he kept very good control. Fern wrapped her arms around
his waist and yelled with joy. She turned and saw the other teenagers
with them on their motorcycles. She decided at that moment that she
wanted a motorcycle. The wind whipped through her air and they were
all shouting out in fun. Brett knew exactly where her house was.

"How do you know where my house is?" Fern wondered aloud when they
arrived at her home and had stopped.

"I followed you home the first night we met. I was worried that you
might become a missing person," Brett explained.

"You must have a really good memory," Fern exclaimed.

"You don't even know," Brett grinned. Fern ran inside and put her
rollerblades by the door. She came running back out and saw only Brett
sitting on his bike.

"Where did the rest of them go?" Fern asked.

"They went on a ride on the beach. You and me will go back to our
place. Kenneth and Elizabeth are back there," Brett replied.

"There are more people?" Fern inquired.

"Yes, and there is one more guy, Antonio, but he is out riding with
them," Brett chuckled.

"Wow, that is a really big group," Fern exclaimed.

"We are hoping to add another girl. Do you think she will join?" Brett
questioned.

"Yes, after she goes and buys her own motorcycle," Fern announced.

"You needn't buy your own motorcycle, we have a beautiful blue Harley
Davidson that I am sure you would really like," Brett offered.

"I couldn't take it, I would have to get my own," Fern insisted.

"It would be your welcome in gift," Brett decided.

"But," Fern began.

"No buts. You'll receive it after you meet Antonio," Brett interrupted.

"Fine, even though I feel wrong taking it," Fern succumbed to the gift.

"Well, let's go," Brett announced.

"Okay," Fern wrapped her arms around his waist again. He started the
motor and they rode onto the beach. Sand flew into her face and so she
hid her face in Brett's back. Before she knew it, they were at the
wall of rock. She hopped off and so did he. He parked it by the wall.
There were two other motorcycles parked there.

"Aren't you afraid that someone will take them?" Fern questioned.

"No one ever touches our stuff," Brett replied as they began to wade
through the water. They ducked behind the rocks into the tunnel. They
walked past the beaded entrance.

"Where are we going today?" Fern inquired.

"To our real hangout room. I feel like you are all ready one of us,"
Brett smiled. He stopped in front of a large rock. He rolled it away
and it moved over to reveal an opening. When he moved the rock, they
were met by a blast of frigid air.

"It's so cold," Fern shivered and began to rub her arms. Brett removed
his duster and handed it to her.

"Here, you can use my jacket," Brett helped her put it one.

"Won't you be cold?" Fern could not help but stare at his muscular arms.

"No, I am never cold," Brett replied.

"Thanks," Fern smiled. They walked into the chamber hidden by the rock.
It was painted all black and had black furniture. There were vampire
posters posted everywhere.

"I take it that you guys like vampires," Fern observed.

"Yes, I am astonished that you don't," Brett turned to her.

"I do, and I love the fact that they can fly," Fern explained.

"Oh okay," Brett chuckled.

"Hello Brett and hello Fern," A voice that seemed to purr like a cat's
spoke.

"Hi Elizabeth," Brett replied. That was when Fern saw a blonde girl
sitting in one of the chairs. Her clothes made her blend in but Fern
should have noticed her because of her hair but she had not.

"Hi," Fern said uncertainly.

"This one is Elizabeth," Brett said.

"Hi," a red head boy stepped out of the shadows.

"That one is Kenneth," Brett pointed to the grayish blue eyed boy.

"Hi, I am Fern," Fern smiled.

"We all know," Elizabeth purred.

"So you really do speak of me?" Fern asked Brett.

"Yes," Brett blushed and stuttered.

"How cute! Brett is actually turning red," Elizabeth laughed.

"I didn't know that you could do that," Kenneth teased.

"Shutup both of you," Brett playfully growled.

"What time is it?" Fern wanted to know.

"It is about an hour before sunrise," Brett looked at his watch, "Come
on. We ought to start going on our way."

"Okay," Fern followed him out to his bike. She hopped on and hid her
face in his back again. This time, his duster flew out behind her like
wings and Fern had the illusion that she was flying. They arrived at
her house in no time at all.

"Thanks, and here is your jacket," Fern removed his duster and handed it
to him.

"Come here," Brett gestured for her to come closer. She leaned towards
him and he suddenly kissed her. The kiss took her breath away and it
was so sweet.

"Bye," he took off and Fern just stood there, watching him go. She
heard that the telephone was ringing so she ran in.

"Hello," Fern answered.

"Where have you been?" her mother asked.

"I am sorry but I took the longest shower and it felt so good," Fern
acted as if she really did have a nice shower. Instead, she was taking
a quick one after she got off the telephone.

"Okay, I was worried that you were out wandering or had gone wandering
and had disappeared," her mother explained.

"Mom, I told you that I wouldn't so I won't," Fern lied.

"All right, we send all of our love and my mom is still really bad," her
mother explained.

"I am sorry for her and I send my love too," Fern blew a kiss into the
telephone.

"Okay, well honey I am going to go. Love you, bye," her mother blew a
kiss back.

"Bye," Fern said back then hung up the telephone.

The next night, she put on black jeans, a black tank top, and black
hiking boots. She rummaged through her closet because she remembered
having a black, leather jacket. She found it and looked in the mirror.
She liked the look and she decided to leave her hair down tonight.
She decided to take a walk on the beach. She got down there and was
walking on the sand when she saw a girl running by, and she was
screaming in terror. Another boy was running by, his screams were too,
filled with horror. Behind him, two more girls and a boy came running
by, shrieking at the top of their lungs. Fern looked behind them and
did not see a thing then she looked up and she saw Cordilia, Kenneth,
Brenton, Dominic, and Elizabeth.

"Fern, what are you doing here?" Brett asked from behind her.

"I wanted to take a walk. What are you guys?" Fern was a bit
frightened.

"I didn't want to tell you till you met Antonio so here he is," Brett
pointed to an Italian looking boy standing behind him.

"Go help them," he ordered.

"What are you?" Fern repeated her question.

"Isn't it obvious? We are the vampires of our posters. We are the cause
of the disappearing people. We want you to join us," Brett explained.

"Oh my gosh, vampires don't really exist," Fern insisted.

"Then what is the name that you would call us instead?" Brett wanted to
know.

Fern looked up and looked him in the eye, "Night Dwellers!"

"Are you going to join us?" Brett inquired.

"I don't know. I do not know if I can be a killer. Why are you asking
me to do this?" Fern felt awkward and scared. She realized that if she
did not join them, they would kill her. She wished that she had not
wandered off into the night for she was going to become a missing
person either way.

"Can I leave my parents a note?" Fern wondered aloud.

"Yes, I'll drive you to your home," Brett gestured to his motorcycle
that was in his shadow. He climbed on and Fern hopped on the back.
She wrapped her arms around his waist and hid her face in his back.
She generally rode with joy but tonight dread weighed on her heavily.
They arrived at her home and Fern wrote her parents.

"Dear Mom and Dad, I did wander into the night and I befriended people
that I thought were normal. They are not normal and they have
persuaded me to join them or die. I choose to be one of them. I have
become a missing person and I am sorry. I love you both dearly and you
must forgive me. Good-bye and may God keep them from you. Love your
daughter, Fern"

Fern laid it on the table by the door then ran into her room. She
grabbed a bag and into it, she threw her most valued possessions.

"Good-bye forever," Fern looked at her room for one last time then ran
outside.

"What is that?" Brett pointed his chin at her bag.

"It is a few things that I want to have with me," Fern replied.

"Okay, you will be in a lot of pain for two days then you will awaken
with a hunger in you. You'll go on your first kill that night," Brett
explained then started his bike up. They drove through the beach until
the rock wall blocked their way. Once more, they went through the
tunnel but this time, they passed both places that she had been in. He
pushed back another huge rock and she walked into a room that was
decorated much like hers. It was also freezing and Fern shivered
although she wore her coat.

"Take off your jacket," Brett commanded as he removed his duster.

"No way, it is too cold," Fern complained.

"You have to take it off," Brett demanded. Fern gingerly removed her
jacket and inhaled sharply as the cold air got her full blast.

"Get on your knees," Brett bent down onto his knees. Fern followed and
he pulled a switchblade out of his pocket.

"Give me your wrists," he ordered.

"Why?" Fern asked.

"I need you to that is why," Brett huffed. Fern stuck out her hands and
he took his switchblade and sliced a thin line across both wrists. The
pain made Fern dizzy but she did not utter a word. Brett did the same
to his wrists then placed them against hers. Fern stared at the blood
mixing and grimaced. Her hands started to tingle and then her arms.
Brett stood up and showed Fern that his wrists had healed. The
tingling flooded Fern's chest and she fell to the ground. A shriek of
pain passed her lips but she was unaware that it had. She could not
move for she was gripped by such intense pain. She did not even notice
Brett pick her up and place her under the covers on the bed.

Antonio walked in and Brett watched him.

"How is she?" he asked.

"You tell me," Brett hissed. Antonio watched the girl twitch and
squirm. She was crying and moaning and occasionally a scream escaped
her.

"Was I like that?" Antonio wanted to know.

"Go ask Elizabeth," Brett ushered Antonio towards the door. After
Antonio left, Brett came and sat beside Fern. He pushed her hair off
her sweaty face and looked at her eyes. They were unfocused and the
dark blue color of her eyes seemed to be bleached somewhat.

"Mommy, I am so sorry," Fern blurted and she jerked violently.

"Fern, I wish you did not have to go through this," he whispered. He
kissed her on the forehead and then left the room. He walked into the
black room and saw the rest of the vampires in there.

"You didn't eat," Cordilia said.

"I know but I saw her there and I had to do something," Brett explained.

"You need to eat, you gave blood to her to change her and now you need
to eat," Dominic ordered.

"The sun is rising," Brett pointed out, " How can I eat?"

"We saved one," Brenton pulled a blonde girl out from behind him. Her
neck had two small punctures and her skin was bruising around the area.

"Thank you," Brett came over and bit into her neck again.

"No," the girl wailed then there was silence.

The next night, Brett walked into Fern's room. She was tossing and
turning, and moaning. Brett checked her mouth and noticed that small
fangs were developing.

"Hey Brett are you coming?" Kenneth poked his head into her room.

"I'll catch up," he said.

"Fine," Kenneth turned and left. Brett smoothed Fern's hair off her
face.

"Fern, please make it," he begged. Suddenly her eyes opened.

"What in the world?" he opened his mouth in shock.

"Brett, I am hungry," she hissed. He realized then that she was
stronger then he had thought.

"Let's go get your breakfast," he smiled and helped her up. He checked
her wrists and they were completely healed. They walked outside and
Brett gestured towards a blue motorcycle by his.

"This one is yours," he explained.

"I want to fly," Fern insisted and she rose into the air.

"Take your motorcycle so that you do not scare your prey," Brett
commanded.

"Fine, but we will fly later," Fern seemed to have a strong deposition.
They rode their motorcycles to the beach where there was always
someone.

"There is someone," Fern pointed to a lone figure walking by the water.

"I am coming," Brett got off his bike.

"No, you're not," Fern glared at him.

"It is something that the creator and creation must do together," Brett
insisted.

"I don't want you for my creator. I want you as my lover, now stay
here," she took off.

"Fern, you do not know what you are doing," he yelled.

"You underestimate me in many ways," she hissed then ran towards the
figure. It was a teenager boy and he saw her approaching.

"What's wrong?" he asked.

"One of my friends is caught in the rock over there. Can you help me
get him out?" Fern felt a bit of remorse but not much.

"Sure," he replied. They ran to the rock and stopped by it.

"I don't see anyone," he turned to face her.

"I need to tell you something," she looked at him intensely.

"What?" he leaned towards her.

She whispered in his ear, "I am a vampire."

"What?" he stared at her as if she was crazy. Then she opened her mouth
and her fangs glistened in the moonlight.

"No, help me," he wailed then she bit into his throat.

Brett saw her coming back towards him and he saw her wipe off a trail of
blood off her chin.

"What did you do with the body?" he wanted to know.

"I tore it up into little pieces and scattered them across the sand,"
she replied and licked her lips.

"At least you are smart," he shook his head. He started his motorcycle
but Fern touched his arm.

"What is it?" he questioned.

"You said that we could fly afterwards," Fern smiled and he got the
feeling that she was as powerful as he was.

"What will we do with our bikes? Someone might try to take them?" he
wondered aloud.

"You, yourself, said that no one ever touches your stuff so come on,"
Fern laughed.

"Fine, you have too many good points to argue with," he floated up and
so did she. They began to fly over the beach and she yelled with glee.
Two kids saw them and freaked out but Fern and Brett ignored them.

"I want to see the sunrise," Fern announced.

"You can't. The sun will kill you," Brett yelled back. Fern just
laughed insanely.

"You really can't, the sun is instant death to vampires," Brett was
worried that she would try to. Then he saw the tears on her cheeks.

"Why are you crying?" he suddenly grabbed her in mid-flight.

"I never wanted to loose the sunrises. I love the sunrises. What have
you made me?" she screamed and yanked away from him.

"Fern!" he cried out.

"Leave me alone," she sailed away from him.

"Fern, where are you going?" he shouted but she refused to answer and
continued flying away. She flew around for a while then wondered if
her body would heal from a self-inflicted wound. She bit her arm and
watched the skin knit itself together.

"What have you made me?" she shrieked into the night air and she began
to cry. Finally, she flew back to her motorcycle and saw that Brett's
was gone. She hopped on hers and drove back to her new home. She got
there and saw everyone else was back. She walked in and passed the
black room. She walked into the room that she had been transformed in.
This one was her room and she did not care what anyone said. She
picked up a picture of her mom and her dad. She kissed the picture
sorrowfully then put it by her bed. She lay down on her bed and
noticed that she was no longer cold anymore. She felt a sleep stronger
then any she had know before grab her and yank her into a dreamless
world of darkness.

When she awoke, Brett tried to talk to her but she pushed him away. She
began to walk down the beach and she saw a group of kids hanging out.
She selected a cute boy and walked up to him.

"Hi, can I show you something?" she used her sexiest voice to tempt him.

"Sure," he winked at his friends and she pulled him behind the same rock
that she had made her first kill at.

"Here you are," she smiled and allowed her fangs to show. She opened
her mouth to bite him.

"I don't think so," he pushed her backwards and something sharp seemed
to poke through her.

Brett was flying over head when he saw Fern about to bite a boy. There
was another boy with a stake behind her.

"No," he shouted and began to fly down. He saw the boy push Fern and he
saw the stake go through her.

Fern," he screamed. He whipped down and grabbed her before the two boys
knew what was happening. On his way down, he used his nails and sliced
one of the boy's shoulders wide open.

"Brett, it hurts," she wheezed out.

"Don't talk," he set her down on top of the cliff. He looked at the
stake going through her and he knew she was going to die.

"How bad is it?" she gasped.

"You're going to die," he told her the truth.

"I figured that I was. It hurts so much," she smiled weakly. She
struggled to sit up and she managed it.

"Don't do that," he chided. She kissed his lips softly then leaned back
down.

"Thank you for making me able to fly," she choked out then she closed
her eyes and smiled. Her head fell to one side and her ragged
breathing died. A thin trail of blood trailed out of the corner of her
mouth.

"No, wake up," he cried out and shook her but she did not move.

Later, he walked into the black room.

"What's wrong, Brett?" Elizabeth asked.

"Fern is dead," he smirked but it was a broken hearted smirk.

"What do you mean? How can Fern be dead?" Dominic questioned.

"Some stupid kids on the beach tricked her into thinking that they did
not know that she was a vampire. They then staked her and I was in
time to see her staked," Brett began to cry.

"My gosh, Brett, you have never cried," Cordilia exclaimed.

"Shutup all of you. I am going to kill them all. They set up a trap
for Fern and killed her and now I am going to make them pay," Brett
went berserk.

"Brett, don't mess with them. They are the ones who killed Vallery and
Timone," Brenton announced.

"I don't care, they killed the wrong vampire," Brett screamed.

"Calm down," Kenneth yelled.

"Screw you. They are going to die," he hit the wall in anger.

"Brett, sleep on it," Antonio smacked Brett across the face.

"You are not worth bearing the name of vampire," Brett cursed.

"I am going to let that slide because grief or something is making you
not think straight," Antonio spat.

"Please go to sleep," Elizabeth begged.

"I will but I will kill them, I will," Brett snarled. He dropped on to
one of the black couches and began to fall asleep. All the other
vampires followed suite.

Brett roared with anger as he woke up the next night.

"Please, think straight," Cordilia cried.

"Let me be. They are going to suffer for taking her away from me. You
got to understand," Brett gripped her by the shoulders.

"You didn't react like this with Vallery and Timone," Elizabeth yelled.

"I didn't see them die. I didn't feel them take their last breaths and
I did not come in time to see them staked," Brett shouted back.

"Go get them Brett. You had better hurry, you know they will be
waiting," Antonio laughed wickedly. Brett turned around and ran out
into the dark. He rose into the air and began to fly to the spot where
Fern was murdered. The kids were there again and he felt anger surge
through him. They had killed the one girl that he had actually felt
feelings for. He zipped super fast into the group and picked up a boy.
He rose into the air, hanging on to the kid by his collar.

"Help me," he yelled.

"What do you want?" a tall girl shouted.

"I want you all dead," Brett replied. The kid in his hands kicked but
not too hard.

"Why do you want us dead? What did we do?" the girl questioned.

"You killed my Fern. You staked her when all she was doing was trying
to cut down on the population problem," Brett felt rage in him but he
controlled it.

"All we were trying to do is cut down on the vampire population
problem," the girl insisted.

"You are a brave one," he laughed.

"You have to be to face creatures like you," the girl retorted.
Suddenly, Brett dropped the kid. Everyone ran to get the kid except
for the girl. He darted at her and while doing so, he cut his wrists.
He grabbed her wrists faster then she could resist and he cut her
wrists. He pressed their wrists together then zipped back into the
air.

"No," she wailed and he saw the group of kids turn at her cry.

"See, I won't kill your people. I'll turn them into vampires like me
and force you to kill them," Brett chuckled.

"I won't let you do this to me," the girl that he had tried changing
growled. He saw her grab for one of her stakes.

"What in the world?" he wondered. She should have been too zoned out to
react.

"I won't," the girl hissed. She dug the stake into her heart and she
screamed with pain.

"Carlie, no," one of the other children shrieked.

"I have to eat," Brett flew down and grabbed the boy that he had
dropped. He bit into his neck and when he was done, he dropped the body
back into the crowd of kids.

"Kill him," a chubby boy yelled. Brett laughed and flew back down. He
grabbed a girl and she cursed him.

"You still have to kill him," the chubby boy yelled.

"We can't. He has Sara," another child shouted back.

"You still have to kill him," the chubby boy fit an arrow to his bow and
aimed at Brett.

"You can't kill Sara," a girl cried.

"One life to spare many would not be too bad," he screamed then let the
arrow fly. Brett laughed and threw the girl into the path of the
arrow. It went through her neck and her squeak was cut short by the
shaft.

"No," the chubby boy shrieked but he still fit another arrow to his bow.

"Thanks for having dinner with me but I have got other plans then to
stay here," Brett began to fly back home. He flew in and found
everyone gone except for Elizabeth.

"What are you still doing here?" he was smiling for tonight he had won a
small victory.

"How many did you kill?" she wanted to know. Her voice revealed
disgust.

"I killed one and they killed one and one killed herself," Brett
explained.

"Why?" Elizabeth asked.

"Well, I was changing one but she killed herself in order to not be one.
The one they killed was shot because I used her as a shield when they
tried to shoot me," Brett chuckled.

"You are loosing your mind," Elizabeth hissed.

"No, I am not. I am winning us a freedom from the vampire hunters,"
Brett smiled.

"How do you figure that? You are killing their people so they are going
to hunt for us harder," Elizabeth rolled her eyes and walked away from
him.

"Then I will have to kill them faster, won't I?" Brett questioned and he
walked towards Elizabeth.

"Stay away from me. You will be the death of us. I will not have
anything to do with you until you are done," Elizabeth announced.

"That won't take too long. I have about eighteen left. Three a night
equals six nights," Brett exclaimed.

"Oh good, not only are you insane but you can do division," Elizabeth
jeered at him.

"Elizabeth, you have to understand," Brett started.

"Save it for the reaper when he comes to gather our bodies after you
draw the vampire hunters here," Elizabeth cursed. She walked out and
Brett sat down with a sigh.

"Why'd you have to take the wind out of my sail?" Brett huffed. He felt
a rising joy in him though because he had killed some for Fern.

"My Fern, I have killed for you," he decided to go look in on her. She
was on her bed, her hands folded across her chest. The stake wound was
covered by a new change of clothes. She was still beautiful and
innocent looking even in death. He smoothed her hair back and kissed
her forehead.

"My Fern, there are three dead. I will kill them all and your death
will be avenged. Then perhaps, I will join you. Do you know that you
were my first real vampire lover? If you had not told me that I was, I
would have asked. I wish I had been able to save you. My Fern," he
began to cry and took her hands in his. He laid his head on her belly
and closed his eyes. He did not know how long he was there when he
heard footprints on the rock floor.

"Brett, are you okay, man?" Kenneth asked.

"Yeah, I am fine. Is that all that you wanted to know?" Brett
questioned.

"No, Dominic is dead," Kenneth looked down at the floor.

"What? Who? How?" Brett needed to know.

"He was set up just like Fern. Only they made it look like there was
only one kid when in reality there was like fifteen. They staked him
and I found him, dead," Kenneth explained.

"How do you know how he was set up?" Brett inquired.

"I saw him go after the one child but I did not see any others. I came
back to see about fifteen scattering then I saw him and he was dead,"
Kenneth replied.

"We have to kill them. Otherwise they are going to kill us all," Brett
ordered. He looked at Fern and he felt his anger drain out of him.

"Isn't she beautiful? I am so glad that we do not decay like humans. I
do not think I could handle her like that. She looks like she is
alive," Brett stroked her cheek.

"Well, we know she is not and it is bedtime," Kenneth helped Brett to
his feet.

Right before they pulled the rock over the doorway, Brett looked in and
whispered, "Goodnight sweet Fern. May we awake together."

When he awoke, he smiled wickedly. He was going to get revenge for his
dead Fern.

"Don't you think you are taking this too far?" Cordilia questioned.

"No way. They killed Dominic, Fern, Vallery, and Timone. They deserve
to die. In fact I have decided to help him," Kenneth hissed.

"No Kenneth," Elizabeth looked wounded.

"I am sorry but they will try to kill you too and I cannot have that,"
Kenneth insisted.

"If you want them to leave us alone then stop killing them," Elizabeth
grabbed a black vase and threw it at Kenneth.

"Elizabeth stop," Cordilia yelled.

"Get a hold of yourself," Brenton grabbed her hands and kept her from
grabbing any other objects.

"You are bringing the deaths on us," Elizabeth cursed at Brett.

"We all are bringing the death on us. It is payback for all the lives
that we have took," Brett whispered then stalked out of the room.

"Hey wait up Brett. I am coming too," Kenneth came running up. They
jumped on their motorcycles and Brett spat onto the sandy earth.

"We have to rid ourselves of these vampire hunters once and for all.
They are taking us one by one for every three or four that we take of
them," Brett started his bike.

"I way agree, man. Those mortals must die," Kenneth started his bike.
The two of them took off across the sand. Brett saw the group of kids
in the same spot and shook his head.

"Kenneth," he yelled. Kenneth stopped his bike, as did Brett.

"You attack from the air and I will attack from the land," Brett
planned.

"No way. I get to attack on land too," Kenneth insisted.

"I have the power to keep them off of me but you do not. So stay in the
air," Brett ordered.

"What happens if I don't?" Kenneth asked.

"If they don't kill you, I will. Not to mention Elizabeth would make my
life a living hell for your not following my directions. So stay in
the air," Brett commanded.

"Fine," Kenneth succumbed to Brett's directions and rose into the air.

"Look who is here," the chubby kid laughed. The kids parted to reveal a
small fire in the middle of their group. In the fire were pictures of
Fern and they were melting.

"No," Brett cried out but he could not retrieve them.

"What's wrong? You did not know her, did you? She was a pretty girl on
the beach who tried to eat my friend and my other friend got a stake
into her heart, like so," the chubby kid demonstrated the moves.

"You monster," Brett rammed through the crowd of kids and grabbed the
fat kid by his neck.

"I ain't afraid of dying but you obviously were, you wouldn't have
become a vampire if you had not been afraid of death," the chubby kid
cried.

"I would bite your neck but too much fat is bad for the system," Brett
chuckled then snapped the chubby kid's neck. He heard a warlike scream
behind him and he saw a girl charging at him with a stake in her hands.
He snapped the stake with his mind but the girl kept on coming. He
yanked the stake out of her hands and bit her throat. Out of the
corner of his eye, he saw Kenneth lay two down after tearing their
necks open with his nails. By the time the kids had run off, seven lay
slain in the sand.

"I must say," Brett wiped a spot of blood off his cheek, "We did better
then I expected."

"Oh yeah, and that was fun," Kenneth pulled an arrow out of his arm.

"What do you say we do it again tomorrow?" Brett inquired.

"I am so for it," Kenneth smiled insanely. They rode their motorcycles
back to their cave.

"How many did you kill this time?" Elizabeth asked.

"We killed seven," Brett replied.

"You are evil. You never raged a full blown war like this before you
met Fern," Elizabeth yelled.

"Don't blame this on Fern. This is revenge for all vampires that have
been staked. This is punishment for people that wanted us dead. Fern
was just the last straw," Brett screamed.

"You could have had Kenneth killed out there," Elizabeth raged.

"Kenneth made the decision to join me and he made the decision to kill.
I kept him in the air because I was afraid of his dying. He made the
decision," Brett insisted.

"It doesn't matter. Your insanity is what challenged him and he
followed you into the darkness. If he dies trying to fight the vampire
hunters, I will kill you and I will not be so kind to stake you. I
will burn you," Elizabeth threatened.

"Chill out Liz," Kenneth dropped onto the couch, "I had fun and was in
no danger."

"No danger! Those "children" kill vampires for fun. They have taken
four out of our pack and I will not let you be the fifth. They are
definitely bad news and I will not have you claiming that they were a
breeze to conquer. There are still eleven of them and that is not a
small number to play with," Elizabeth scolded.

"I said chill out. I survived and that is that. Perhaps if you came
and helped us fight, we could win and have less fear of being staked,"
Kenneth pointed out.

"He does have a good point," Brett nodded his head.

"Are you talking to me? Because if you are, I have plenty to say to
you," Elizabeth warned.

"Look Liz, you want to yell at me some more? You'll have to do it to my
sleeping body," Kenneth rolled over and began to snore. Brett had to
laugh for everyone knew that vampires did not snore.

"How was your night?" Cordilia walked in and licked her finger.

"We succeeded in killing seven of them," Brett bragged.

"Oh, that is great," Brett could tell that Cordilia was not happy.

"What is wrong?" Brett asked.

"You are killing locals. That is going to draw trouble and even you know
that. You do not even bother covering the bodies. Me and Antonio
follow you and do it for you," Cordilia admitted.

"Yes, and it is killing my back," Antonio pretended to be human for a
moment.

"Not funny," Cordilia threw a black, stuffed, teddy bear at him.

"Ouch, that hurted beary bad, and Cordilia is having a beary hard time
getting her beary important point across the beary stupid bears,"
Antonio teased.

"Antonio, I am going to beary smack you," Cordilia got up and began to
chase Antonio around the room.

"Will you two grow up? We have got a crazy killer amongst us and we are
letting him kill," Elizabeth yelled.

"Elizabeth, we can cover up the bodies and they are stupid locals. They
should know that they should not be out wandering out at night,"
Cordilia shouted back.

"You don't understand, he will draw the vampire hunters to our cave.
Are you prepared to fight them on their terms?" Elizabeth inquired.

"How can they find our cave? We are too fast for them to follow and it
is guarded if they do find our cave," Brenton pointed out.

"I don't know. I am just trying to make a point and you are messing it
up," Elizabeth hissed.

"It doesn't matter right now. It is time to sleep," Brett climbed on to
the black lounger and closed his eyes.

"It is time to sleep," Cordilia agreed.

"Fine, this isn't over yet," she crawled onto the black bed and fell
asleep.

During the day, eleven children carrying loads of meat snuck into the
ocean water and snuck into the tunnel.

"Oh god, no," Elizabeth shrieked. Brett opened his eyes and felt his
hunger surge.

"What is it Elizabeth?" Brett asked.

"The children snuck into here during the day," she cried.

"How do you know that?" Kenneth inquired then stood up and began to
yell, "No way! No freaking way!" Brett stood up and a cry of alarm
escaped his lips. Cordilia lay on her beanbag; a wooden stake drove
through her heart. Antonio must have awakened for he had two arrows
through his neck and a stake through his heart. He was also leaning
against the wall. Brenton lay on his couch with a stake in his heart.

"Are you happy? Are you happy, yet? You drew them to our lair and now
we are all that is left. Just us three and I hate you for this,"
Elizabeth spat.

"Chill out, Liz, it was not Brett's fault," Kenneth came to Brett's
rescue.

"Yes, it was. He should have let them be," Elizabeth hurled a porcelain
black dog across the room. It shattered into a million pieces beside
Antonio's lifeless body.

"Liz, they were vampire hunters, they would have found us sooner or
later. It is not Brett's fault," Kenneth hugged the distraught
vampire.

"What are we going to do?" Elizabeth sobbed.

"We are going to find the rest of them and destroy them. Then we will
start over and build our pack back up," Brett instructed.

"Ok, let's go," Elizabeth leaned on Kenneth. They walked out of the
tunnel in front of Brett. Suddenly, gasoline poured down on the both
of them and Brett watched aghast as a match was dropped.

"No," he yelped then dove for cover. The explosion rang in the cave and
for a moment he saw two figures dancing in the fire then, they
crumpled. He saw another figure walking out of the fire.

"Who are you?" he called.

"Brett, don't you recognize me?" a familiar voice asked.

"Fern," he cried out.

"Yes, I came back to warn you that another vampire is on her way but she
seeks to destroy you. Get out why you can and go start over. Do it
for me," she begged.

"I can't unless you come," he explained.

"I am always there with you but not in flesh or whatever you would call
our skin. Please, you have to leave now or face an old friend," Fern
ordered.

"I won't leave," Brett insisted.

"Then I must go. Good bye again Brett," Fern turned and walked back
into the fire.

"Fern, come back. I am sorry. Don't leave me," Brett screamed and
tears poured down his cheeks. Fern did not come back and he cried once
more, "Fern!" but she did not come and he knew she would not. He stood
up and realized that she would have wished him to be brave.

"I will fight for all vampires and tonight I will join my friends and my
Fern. We will be together," Brett whispered into the dark then walked
out into the fiery inferno. He flew over the flames and splashed into
the ocean waves.

"What did you do to my dogs?" he questioned.

"Gave them meat loaded with sleeping pills. Why does Fern not look any
different then when we staked her?" a voice called back.

"Our bodies don't decay, she is still beautiful isn't she?' Brett asked.

"Actually, she is but that is not the point," the voice sang down, "We
have killed everyone but you on purpose. You killed many people and we
wanted you to know that we are ending your reign of terror." Brett
flew up to the cliff top without warning and he landed softly.

"Why do you think that would bother me?" he wondered a loud.

"How the heck," the girl that had been talking started but Brett pushed
her off the cliff.

"Have a nice trip and see you in hell," Brett turned and saw a kid with
a bow and arrow.

"Did you shoot Antonio in the neck?" Brett had to know.

"Yes sir, he was trying to bite us," the boy's voice was shaking.

"Do be steady with your aim," Brett instructed then ran at the kid with
amazing speed.

"Was he trying to bite your neck like this?" Brett bit the left side of
the kid's neck. "Or was it like this?" Brett bit the right side.

"It was like neither," the kid gurgled blood and shot off his arrow.
Then his body twitched and was still. The arrow struck Brett in the
leg and he snarled with anger. He yanked it out and cast it aside.
That was when he saw a girl peering out from behind a rock. He ran
over and yanked her out by her hair.

"Where are the rest of your kind?" Brett hissed.

"Half are at the beach in case you try to run and the other half
chickened out," the girl was sobbing.

"Good answer but too bad,' Brett threw the girl over the side of the
cliff. He flew over the beach and saw about five kids sitting huddled
around a fire. They were looking around nervously and seemed to be
shaking. Brett snuck behind a boy about seventeen years old and snapped
his neck. The boy fell forward into the fire and the other kids jumped
up and began to scream.

"Go away, cursed bloodsucker," a boy cried.

"Brett, are you giving these kids a hard time?" a voice that Brett had
not heard in a long time asked.

"Who are you?" he turned to face the shadows.

"Oh please. You do not remember me? Fourteen years ago, when I was
fifteen you changed me and you tried to change my ten-year-old brother
but he died during the transformation. My two-year-old sister was left
at home but you got her at the age of fifteen, too. I came back to see
her become like us and to be staked. She was weak though. In all of
my fourteen years of being a vampire, I have yet to take a human life
while my younger sister within two days took one life and attempted to
take another. I am glad that she was staked. It saved me the trouble
of having to do it," the girl explained.

"Willow, I did not mean for Fir to die. He would have been an
incredible vampire and your sister should not have died. You cannot
stake me anyway," Brett realized who she was.

"Why not? You took everything that my parents loved away from them.
You killed my little brother and caused my little sister's life to be
cut short. You changed me against my will and so now, I am doomed to
walk the earth forever in this form. Give me one good reason why I
shouldn't stake you," Willow ordered.

"I loved Fern. I changed her because I really did care for her and I
tried to save her when she was staked. I really did but I was too late
and she died in my arms. I really did love her," Brett felt a tear
slip down his cheek.

"Big deal. I loved my parents, my brother, and Fern and you took them
away from me. So love is not a good enough reason," Willow chided and
she pulled a thick stake out of her bag.

"Wait, do not kill me because Fern loved me back," Brett was about to
beg for his life.

"What do you mean by that?" Willow glared at him.

"She did and I knew that you were coming because she told me. She came
out of the fire that was Elizabeth and Kenneth and told me that a
vampire from my past was coming. That is love, to warn me of you. She
also called me her lover," Brett insisted.

"She warned you of me? I can't believe that because she is dead,"
Willow raised her stake.

"She also called you a female vampire and she said that if I did not
leave that moment, I would never leave," Brett said.

"That is because it is true. I am going to kill you," Willow suddenly
shoved the stake at Brett's heart but he flew into the air.

"Don't make this difficult," Willow complained as she shot into the air.

"What, you want me to let you kill me? I know that you know me better
than that so please give me more credit," Brett chided.

"Whatever," Willow darted at Brett with the stake but he moved lower.

"Stop moving. I just want to get this over with," Willow shouted. She
charged at Brett again but he dropped to the ground. He ran back to
the fire of the kids and found a couple deserted stakes. He grabbed
one and turned to see her running at him. He sidestepped and plunged
the stake into her heart.

"Wait, you're supposed to die," Willow gasped. She toppled backward
onto the ground.

"Look's like I won again, Willow. I am afraid that your body was just
not strong enough to handle the process," Brett smirked.

"Is yours, Sucker?" a voice laughed and Brett gasped in pain. He looked
down and saw the tip of a stake sticking out of his chest.

"Looks like we both loose," Willow laughed then died.

"Brett, hurry. We'll be together again," Fern's voice giggled.

"I am coming my Fern. I am coming," Brett saw his world through a red
screen and he toppled to the ground, face first.

"Brett, you are taking your sweet time. Come on lover," Fern's voice
teased.

"I am coming," Brett spoke into the sand with his last breath, then
closed his eyes, and died.
