Meeting With A Woodland Creature

by J P St. Jullian

Hey, you there, cloistered in those upper branches,

Hidden among the emerald forest foliage.

Moving not a muscle, hardly,

Using all your instinctive knowledge . . .

No need for you to be frightened of me,

So near your sheltered place;

Pausing, searching, looking, just for a moment,

Hoping to meet you face to face.

I'm hoping to see your exquisite beauty, perched

On a low, and preferably barren bough

To make my visual pleasure easy,

And not as you are hidden now.

I'd express to you my truest intent, If I could,

To you and all your kind, and I'd

Make mention of my search for answers,

To nourish questions on my mind.

Oh no, wait! Don't go! I'm the one trespassing.

I shall be leaving you now!

Why should you answer my foolish questions anyway?

Your silent splendor tells me all I have a right to know . . .

Excuse my blunt and unannounced intrusion.

You're more content with being you than man is with himself,

You have no need for social graces, and bear

No worry of tomorrow's dawning . . .

The day at hand is all that matters to you.

The answer is so obvious now, and a simple answer it is . . .

I am the one who must walk the earth, not you!

You have Divine gifts of painted plumes,

And it is I, not you, who must ask the help of God.
