Perchance to Dream... (standard:poetry, 195 words)

Sometimes the haunting ones stay with you into your waking hours.

An evisceration of emotion

The deathly pall of a tainted dream

A love which once filled the conscious heart

betrayed when slipped the constraints of reality

It's said in dreams no pain will kiss the brow

The dreamer, akin to an unwoken fool

Can't shake

Can't let loose

That which never truly existed

Yet lingers and haunts my waking hours

Characters I know only within this alternate reality can clearly discern

My swift descent from the joy of your presence

To the austere dulling of loss

There is no grace to my slumber

No reprieve to be had from the connection between feeling

and a writhing subconscious heart

While in my most defenseless state

My fairest desire thrust before me as the tawdriest of painted ladies

I want to hear it from you, but you won't come to me

You retreat from my dreams, where you always lived before?

I've so long waited for the lustre of your voice

For the twinkle in your eye

In a semi-lucid state

Between the gathering fear of my dream and reality

I can physically feel the nagging ache

Please tell me it was just the worst of dreams
