christmas from a child's perspective

When you are a child, the holidays can be a wonderful time. It almost
seems like it will never come but it does and it is usually a snow
covered day filled with waiting and anticipating.

When you are a child, you don't have to wrap the gifts. You don't have
to wait in lines at the mall and you still believe in Santa Claus.

When you are a child, you go to church on Christmas and you pray that
Jesus has a special birthday and hears your special prayer that you
whisper when so many other people in church are singing off key. You
hope your voice is not as bad as theirs.

When you are a child, especially in Catholic school, there is always a
Christmas play and you hope you get a speaking part. Or get to sing a
song. Classroom parties are always fun because you don't have to do
schoolwork and you always get out early! Remember that?

When you are a child, even the night skies look different and the stars
are bright in anticipation of what is to come. There is hope for
tomorrow and you even forget that you got yelled at in English class.
Who cares about that. It's Christmas!

When you are a child, especially in Catholic school, the nuns are always
reminding you that it is Advent season and it seems that your class is
going to mass every day and adding a figure to the creche and it is a
special honor to place the baby Jesus in the creche and you have to be
really go to be chosen to do this! It's a big deal to an eight year
old. Remember that?

When you are a child, you study the christmas tree and shake the
presents wondering what you got. You don't know that your parents
spent lots of money and hours trying to figure out what you want and
worry if you will like it or not. Its a gift.

When you are a child, you don't really understand the reason for the
season, but you do sense that sometimes people are a little nicer and
there are times you try to be nice yourself.

It's not about presents or giving. Its about Jesus and his day and about
being grateful for what you have and looking up at the stars and being
happy to be exactly where you are now.

When you are an adult, waiting in all those Black Friday lines,
wondering why are there, try to remember the best gift you can give
anyone is time. Time to be with your family, friends and time to be
kind to one another.

Merry Christmas....

Remember that? I hope so despite all the commercials ...
