They say that good triumphs evil, but what if I told you they were wrong? What if I told you back in my time, in my days...

harshly into her cheek bone. Mom fell to the ground like a pound of
bricks. I flinched back, and like a coward I turned and ran. I had only
passed through my sisters' door when I heard the pounding of their feet
rush up the stairs after me. I threw the oak door shut, and locked it.
“Fiona, get up! We have go!” I rushed to her side, and urged her to
move. She was terrified, and shook her head furiously. “Fiona, I'm
trying to save you!”

The guards were now throwing themselves against the door, and the lock
was threatening to give. I threw my sisters' blanket back, and grasped
her wrist. She followed willingly, but resisted when I threw her window
open.

“Are you insane?” She exclaimed as she grabbed my arm. “You're going to
get hurt!” I looked at her with an annoyed expression and answered “Who
cares!? It's the only way to save you.” And without another word I
flung myself out the window.

The good news is I didn't collide with the ground. The bad news is I
landed in a pile of donkey dung. My sister made a face, but was
compelled to jump when she head the door creak. I hardly had time to
scramble out of the way. She landed with a squeal, and sprung out with
the speed of a gazelle. Neither one of us wasted any time to flee, and
try to find a place to hide. I think she knew in the back of her mind
that there would be no escape. I knew it too, but I wasn't letting them
take Fiona without a fight. We weren't gone for more than thirty
seconds when the warning bells started to clang.

Every unlocked door was locked. Every window was closed, and the blinds
lowered. Every one that was awake was now cowering in the darkest
corner of their home for they knew the consequences. House a fugitive
running from the law, and get killed. We were on our own here. I looked
up at my sister to see her rosy lips set in grim realization. Her blue
gray eyes were clouded over. She was giving up. “Fiona, don't give up.
We can...we can make it through this...” My dark green eyes were
darting from house to house trying to find a refuge. I was growing
desperate.

“Warren, there's nothing to do but give up.” There was no hope in her
voice. There wasn't an ounce of faith. I took her hand in mine, and was
surprised when she squeezed it softly, and smiled grimly at me. The
pounding of marching feet approached faster the longer we stood here.
She kneeled down, and hugged me close. “I'll never forget you Warren,
no matter what happens.” As she pulled away I saw crystalline tears
pooling in her eyes.

Before I could tell her I loved her booming voice sliced through the
silence. “Fiona and Warren Peace, you are in violation of several
conduct laws, and disrupting of the peace! Article number 1723 in the
Declaration of all Districts under the Over lord clearly states that at
the coming of age any and all citizens are to participate in the
Harvesting.” My sister and I stood rigidly, and stared at the ground.
Whatever you do, don't look up into their eyes.

“Yes sir!”

“Yes sir, what?”

“We understand our violations to the Over lord, sir!”

“Then you understand the both of you must be punished however the Over
lord sees fit. Under Article 3733, any and all suspects will be
withheld within the prison as long as the trial remains active. This
Article also states that we, the iron fist of the Over lord, have the
power to arrest the both of you. Hold your wrist out.” Fiona didn't
think twice about it. She stuck her arms straight out, and didn't
flinch when they snapped shackles around her wrist, and ankles.

I, however, would not go quietly.

“Fiona, what are you doing!? We were so close!” The brick wall of a
soldier stepped forward, and grasped the front of my shirt in his fist.
Effortlessly, he lifted me to stare him in his face. However, years of
training made me drop my chin in submission. Never look a cat in the
eyes... “Look at me, boy.” His voice boomed, and I obeyed without
question or hesitation. My dark green eyes looked into his black eyes,
and for a moment I was terrified.

“I admire your guts, kid, but you're smug certainty makes me wanna smack
you. You're ignorance, and stupidity is a grand example as to why your
people are played like pawn. Useless until brain washed.” I had the
sudden urge to kick him in the shin. Seeing how I was suspended in air
this would prove ill-fated. So, I spat a glob of spit in his face. The
soldier howled with rage, and tossed me to the ground. I was dazed, but
was quite aware I'd be punished.

I just never imagined it would be so profane.

The crack of his spear-butt connecting with my skull sent me reeling
back into the dust. My senses were panicked, and I was scared to death.
My sister didn't scream. She didn't tug at her bounds to save me. There
wasn't a hint of compassion to be seen on her constitution. In fact,
she seemed nonchalant about the ordeal. “On your feet, boy!” the guard
ordered, his tone laced with wicked mirth. Slowly, I began to rise to
my feet, but the guard slammed the butt of the spear into my face, and
I fell back into the dirt once more. Blood spewed from a cut above my
eyebrow, and made eyesight impossible. The guard grinned smugly before
delivering another blow to my ribs. I could feel them cracking under
the pressure, and tears rushed to my eyes. Unable to control myself I
cried out, and repented. “I'm sorry; I don't think I heard you. Say it
again.”

I cried out once more. “I'm sorry! I was wrong!” Yet, that didn't stop
the guard from kicking me upside the head. My day lights had been put
out for the time being.
