The Death of Professor

Subba Rao

“They want me dead,” the professor looked resigned. He lost

weight and looked totally different with over grown grey beard on his

dark skin, looked like a different person. Just few years ago, he was

a jolly good and easy going person retired from teaching at a

prestigious university known for academic excellence.

“Who?” Juggernaut looked perplexed.

“My family.”

“No.”

“Yes, yes and Yes.

“I cannot believe that your family wants you dead and for what?”

“Well, they don't want to spend any money on me, not a cent

towards my medical bills; you know how expensive is to go to a doctor

and paying for medicines and if necessary getting a surgery and all

this costs lots of money.”

“Don't you have a good pension and on top of it I am sure you

saved enough working for so long and how about medical insurance?”

“I don't have a medical coverage after retirement, yes I do get

a decent monthly pension and have good bank balance from years of

work,” the professor looked dejected.

“Since you retired 8 years ago you were working in a college

financially supported by a rich Hindu Ashram known for giving free

medical care for its staff?”

“Yes, I have been teaching graduate students for free at the

ashram college living free in a dorm room. Baba, the head of the ashram

decides who gets free surgery and he knows that I have a bad heart and

needs surgery. I am on the list as far I know but I never got a call

yet.”

“May be the Baba thinks you were rich and don't need a free

medical care.”

“The Baba knows my background, on rare occasions he stopped by

me and smiled.”

“That's it.”

“Every day hundreds of thousands of devotees wait for hours to

get just a glimpse of him. I was working for over 8 years, one day I

was lucky enough to receive Baba's blessing; he touched my chest gently

and smiled.”
