A SECOND CHANCE

by

Joe DeMonte

I hear the sounds of music and laughter. I hear the voices of my
classmates - Steven, Arliss, John. They are calling out to me. I try
to reach them but cannot. Ah, but that was so long ago. I see a school
now. It is my school, and a ceremony of sorts is taking place there.
I am at the ceremony. It is my high school graduation, and I am
wearing the very same white gown and cap I once wore. Dr. Levin is
handing me my diploma. I am smiling. Mother and father are there, and
so is Tom. Dear sweet Tom. Now the vision is gone, and I cannot see
Tom or anyone. Wait, there he is. He is by the big oak tree and he is
calling out to me. He shouts my name over and over but I do not
answer, though I know

not why. Now Tom is gone for good. Now I see a hospital. I am inside
the hospital, and i can hear the distinct sound of a baby crying out
after taking its first breath. It is my baby! It is Corliss. I hear
no more from her. She is gone, just as she went so long ago. Again I
hear music, but it is not happy music. I hear voices, too. They are
gruff and filled with anger. I see dim lights and smoke filled rooms.
There are sailors there. Their sweaty hands reach out at claw at my
body. I am running now. There is a horse and carriage coming towards
me. I cannot see it but I can hear it. It is coming faster now and
the hoof beats are louder. I scream. I hear nothing now. “She's dead,”
the nurse said. “Did she have any identification?” “Yes,” the doctor
replied, “but the police took it after the carriage ran her down. ” He
covered her body with a long white sheet, then said to the nurse,
“She's probably just another streetwalker who had too much to drink.
It happens all the time in that part of London.” “I'll contact the
police then in the morning about her identification,”

the nurse stated. “Too late to do it now.” I can hear again. but where
am I? I feel as though I am floating in space. I no longer feel pain.
Now, I remember! I was running from that sailor and was hit by a
carriage! But what happened, and where am I now? I try to touch myself
but nothing moves. I can feel nothing at all. There is no pain
though. Why is that? And why can't I see or hear? Wait, I do hear
something now. It is a voice. A very strong voice, unlike any I have
ever heard, and it is saying my name. “Margeret. Margeret Forbes. Can
you hear me, Margeret?” “Yes, I can hear you,” I cry out, able now to
speak once again. “Who are you?” “I am the Lord, Margeret Forbes. I am
the Lord, thy God. Do you understand? ” My entire body shudders and
trembles and above me now I can see a very bright white light. It is
such a beautiful light. “I - I understand, Lord, ” I reply weakly.
Now I know! I am dead! I am dead and my Lord is speaking to me. “You
have died, Margeret,” He says to me in His powerful voice. “I - I
know, Lord,” I mutter. Then I begin to cry.

“You have lived a wicked life, my child, and you have sinned over and
over,” the Lord tells me. “I - I know, my Lord, ” I say lamely. “I
am sorry. I truly am.” “I believe you, Margeret, ” He says to me.
“That is why I am going to bestow upon you a second chance.“ “A sec -
second chance, Lord?” “Yes, Margeret, a second chance. Do you wish to
have a second chance, or do you want your soul to burn now in hell
forever?” “No, Lord!” I scream out. “Please -- I want a second
chance. I will do good this time. I promise. I swear it! ” “Very
well. I shall grant you a second chance then.” “But, Lord?” “Yes, my
child?” “Could -- could I be someone else this time? I mean, could I
maybe be a man this time? It was so difficult for me as a woman, my
Lord. You don't know the problems I had as a woman. ” “But I do know,
and perhaps you are right. Very well then, your soul shall return now
as a man. Are you ready?” “Oh, yes, Lord! I am ready! And -- and
thank You, my Lord.” I hear a loud noise and then He is gone. The very
bright light

has vanished also. I can see nothing now, but I feel as though I am
upside down! “Owwww!” I wail and start to cry loudly. Someone has
smacked me hard on the buttocks and it stings. I am being covered now
in what seems like a very soft blanket. I can hear voices talking in a
foreign tongue as I am carried down a long corridor. Now I understand!
I have been re-born! The Lord has kept His promise to me! A while
later I am taken to meet my new mother. I must do better this time. I
must not fail my Lord. I hear voices again, and a woman is holding me
to her breast. “Congratulations, ” I hear someone say, as I suckle
greedily on the breast. “You have such a fine, healthy son, Frau
Hitler. What will you name him?” “Adolf,” I hear my new mother say.
“I shall call him Adolf.”
