Chapter Two - "The Mission" 

Seated at the table in the briefing room were nine of Star Fleet's best
ship commanders. 

Seated from Kirk's left were; Captain Ronald Jones of The Defiant,
Commodore Matt Decker of the Constellation, Captain Carmela Diaz of the 
Excalibur, Captain Ivan Golov of The Potemkin, Captain Charles Uda of 
The Hood, Captain Morgan Williams of The Republic, Captain Angela 
Shultz of The Yorktown, and Commodore Robert Wesley of the Lexington, 
with Admiral Komack and T'Prell finishing the cycle around the table. 

Kirk didn't know Jones well. He had met him at a Federation function
when he still was a Commander stationed on the Yorktown before the 
command crew changed. He seemed to be a fair man and had a great sense 
of humor. 

He knew Decker well. He was about fifteen years older than Kirk and was
a seasoned commander. He was known for having a foul mouth and short 
temper. He had repeated reprimands from command for ridiculing his 
bridge personnel. Decker believed he was making a better officer for 
it. His son Will was stationed onboard the Enterprise as a Lieutenant 
junior grade and was an up and comer. 

Golov was a no nonsense commander that treated people with respect, but
wanted instant results. He was the type you wanted around when things 
got tough, because he never got flustered. He has never laughed in the 
presence of anyone. 

Charles Uda seemed to be an easygoing commander' but under that calm
exterior was an intellect that could assess a situation and order the 
proper response quickly. 

Morgan Williams he knew very well. While Kirk was still a cadet, he was
stationed on the Republic one summer as an acting Ensign. Williams took 
him under his wing and showed him his style of command. It was the same 
style that Kirk used today. Kirk was stationed on the Republic again 
for a short while after graduating, much to his delight. 

Shultz was a very good commander. When she took over the Yorktown, Kirk
and all the other male crew were asked to seek other assignments. She 
chose her crew herself and the Yorktown became the first all female 
starship. Each officer referred to each other as ‘Sir', or ‘Mister'. 
The old saying ‘Don't ask, don't tell' came to mind. 

Bob Wesley was the senior commander at the table. He had more run-ins
with the Klingons and the Tholians than any other starship Commander. 
He was a lantern jawed, straight laced, by the book type guy that 
always got the job done. His exploits were already required reading at 
the Academy. 

Carmela Diaz was a different story. She was seven years older than Kirk,
but they nearly married six years ago. They both were stationed on the 
Farragut with Captain Garrovick, and it was love at first sight. They 
became serious and Kirk asked her to marry him. She accepted. The date 
was set around the time when the Farragut was to make a stop at 
Starbase 9 so they could enjoy a few days leave. But as that time 
approached, Kirk was offered a promotion that would require him to 
transfer off ship. Kirk turned it down at first, but Diaz wanted him to 
take it, until she found out that he would have to leave. Somehow, 
these two smart, love struck young officers never took into account 
that one or the other might be transferred. Ultimately, Kirk took the 
promotion and the wedding was called off. Diaz told him that if she 
never saw him again, it would be too soon. As well as Kirk's career 
unfolded; this has always been one of those defining points in his 
life. He looked over at her and saw that she wasn't even facing in his 
direction. Kirk's attention was directed to the head of the table, as 
Komack stood. 

“Ladies and gentlemen,” began Komack, “As you know, the last outpost has
just been finished. In addition to replacing the four that were
